2014 Reds Bordeaux s Northern Soul Vintage Written by MW Matthew Hemming Bordeaux produced a very good vintage in 2014. Sometimes it s extremely good, even if it only knocks on the door of 2009/10 greatness rather than actually stepping over the threshold. Having spent a week in the region tasting hundreds of samples, I would rate 2014 ahead of 2008 and alongside vintages I really enjoy drinking, such as 2001, 04 and 06. These may not be from the same top drawer as 2000, 05, 09 or 10 but they are certainly years in which delicious wines were made, which are already proving their mettle in the cellars of canny buyers. Stylistically, I find it quite difficult to pigeon-hole the 2014s. Scanning through my notes, the words that crop up again and again are charming, floral and supple. The best reds share fully ripe and succulent red and black fruit characters, but with a sense of coolness and restraint. Without any lack of ripeness in the successful wines the 14 reds are less sweet and concentrated than in the biggest of vintages. A benefit of this is that alcohol levels are generally pretty modest this year. Chateau Lafite, for me the finest of the 1 st growths in 2014, weighs in at just 12.6%; a welcome dialling back from the 15%+ clarets of the ripest vintages. Comments about texture recur throughout my notes. 2014 seems to have a character of creaminess and layered, silky tannins in a number of the better wines. One thing 2014 is not, is consistent. I find myself thinking about the vintage in three main ways... The Northern Soul Vintage Not quite the soundtrack to our hire car we had the Rolling Stones on repeat this year but a reference to fact that the greatest concentration of really exciting 2014s is to be found in the northern Medoc. The north saw less rain than the south of the region and vineyards of St Estephe undoubtedly benefitted from Bordeaux s Indian Summer that warmed even the cool northern outpost of the Medoc. Calon Segur, Montrose and Cos d Estournel all shone in our tastings and the new regime at Calon really seem to be pushing back the limits of what can be achieved in this extraordinary terroir. What was perhaps more exciting, because it was less expected, was the quality to be found further down the orders at the likes of Chateaux Meyney, Capbern and Lafon Rochet. The 2014 is the best wine I have ever tasted from Chateau Tronquoy Lalande and I m hopeful that it will be keenly priced. There are wines of energy, complexity and yes soul to be found in this region in 2014. PAGE 1

A Cabernet Vintage For lots of tasters 2014 is a left bank vintage and this makes sense as the later ripening Cabernet Sauvignon-dominated vineyards were logically better-placed to benefit from the warm Autumn that brought the grapes to ripeness and saved the harvest. However, this analysis doesn t accommodate the high points of St Emilion and Pomerol, where some extremely good wines were made. Calling 2014 a Cabernet Vintage is deliberately ambiguous because it allows the inclusion of Cabernet Franc as well as - Sauvignon. There was some tremendous Cab Franc picked in 14 and properties with plenty of Franc in their vineyards have made some intensely perfumed, spicy and complex wines. This explains some of the great successes in St Emilion and Pomerol, amongst which are Chateaux Canon, Figeac, Vieux Chateau Certan, Cheval Blanc, Hosanna and, particularly, La Conseillante. A Terroir Vintage Someone said to me whilst we were in Bordeaux that quality will out and a good terroir will always surpass the winemaking thrown at it. I m not entirely sure that I subscribe to this, but I can see a kernel of truth in there. Whilst it s hardly a ground-breaking assertion, it is certainly true that wines from the best sites are frequently the finest examples of 2014. In Pomerol, this means that the chateaux on the plateau consistently outshine those from the sandier margins of the region. In St Emilion wines from the limestone cotes like Figeac, which tastes far more of Figeac than of Michel Rolland thank goodness have the most energy, intensity and depth. Another example, from the Medoc, is Chateau Lanessan. I remember John Avery remarking to me as we drove past that Lanessan has a fantastic vineyard site but rarely fulfils its potential; well, in 2014 this was one of the best junior wines I tasted giving the lie to my friend s suggestion that terroir can overcome shoddy winemaking. As mentioned above Calon Segur, which many believe is one of the greatest vineyards in the Medoc, is a stunning 14, as is Ducru Beaucaillou - from their perfectly drained, gravel-rich terroir. 2014 has produced some intriguing, flattering wines that will provide delicious mid-term drinking. It is a very good vintage in a style that Bordeaux has not produced in some years supple, charming, fragrant and gourmand rather than blockbusting. I look forward to chatting to you about the wines and even more to following their evolution from my glass and at my table over the years to come. PAGE 2

2007 BORDEAUX Written by MW Matthew Hemming For many years the Anglophone wine trade has looked to Bill Blatch for vintage reports and early assessments of the latest Bordeaux wines. Bill - who is instrumental in organising the annual Southwold tastings - has long been based in the region, was a negociant for many years, is one of the world s great Sauternes enthusiasts and is currently writing a book about Bordeaux. In summing up his report on the 2007 vintage, Bill wrote: This was a recovery vintage, a vintage that was on the ropes and then managed to pull on final punch...in spite of everything, maybe somebody up there still likes us. That final punch came on 29 th August 2007. Until that point the weather in Bordeaux had been dreadful: dismal, damp, dreary, cool and overcast. Following a foul day of heavy rains on 29 th the weather turned around. Not only did the sun come out but it pretty much stayed out until November, drying out the vineyards and allowing the fruit to come to ripeness. In addition, gentle breezes throughout the Indian Summer facilitated ventilation of the bunches and allowed them to dry out, easing the threat of rot. Tales of Indian Summers and Miracle Vintages are familiar to those of us who follow the fortunes of Bordeaux vintages and not even the most sunny-dispositioned of us will claim that 2007 produced red wines of the highest calibre. The best 2007s, however, do not attempt to be Grand Vins of great stature. These are wines of fruit and charm that are, in the vast majority of cases, drinking extremely well right now. On the right bank, Merlot grown on the best terroirs warm and well drained fared very well, achieved ripeness and was spared the harshest of the August rains, which raised the spectre of rot elsewhere. For this reason the smaller estates of Pomerol, where smaller scale vineyards can receive the greatest care and attention, did particularly well in 2007. Recent bottles of Chateaux Certan de May and la Conseillante have been a pointe. Across the river in the Medoc the Merlot suffered so winemakers were more reliant than usual on the quality of Cabernet to produce successful wines. For this reason it is the more northerly vineyards of the Medoc where Cabernet dominates that made the best of the 2007 vintage. Pauillac and St Julien both produced a number of successful wines, albeit in a lighter and more forward style. For drinking now, it is hard to go wrong with the likes of Lynch Bages of Pichon Baron an estate that s hardly put a foot wrong in 20 years and which frequently snaps at the tails of the 1 st growths. Domaine Anne Gros 2013s Written by MW Matthew Hemming Anne is a scion of the Gros family a Gordion Knot of a family, the Burgundy equivalent of being Mr Smith in London and with more characters than War and Peace. Daughter of Francois (Domaine Francois Gros, which is now Anne s estate) and niece to Jean (Domaine Jean Gros), Anne s cousins are Bernard (Domaine Gros Frere et Soeur), Michel (Domaine Michel Gros) and Anne-Francois (Domaine A-F Gros). To add to the confusion, whilst Anne worked with her father, the estate was named Anne et Francois Gros. The confusion with cousin Anne- Francois wines is obvious. Given the size of her family, it is ironic that Anne s domaine is so small: just 7 wines are produced, ranging from Hautes Cotes de Nuits (both Blanc and Rouge) up to a tiny parcel of Richebourg. Sadly there is no Chambolle Musigny Combe d Orveaux in 2013 as the crop was savaged by wild deer, damaging the vines and stripping them of the sweet fruit. Indeed, whilst everyone on the Cote suffered to some extent in 2013, it seems that Anne s plagues were almost Biblical, with insects, birds and sangliers all doing their worst. Some people criticise the wines of Domaine Anne Gros for being excessively modern and oaky. It is true that there is a degree of plushness to the textures, but these are plump and seamless wines with ripe and velvety tannins. Anne does pick late, but more often than not this manifests itself as a sense of luxury in the wines rather than fruit that is in any way over-ripe. In 2013 the new oak has been curtailed somewhat 60% rather than 80% for the Grand Crus, for example to give as much emphasis and lift to the fruit as possible. As ever with this domaine, volumes available are small and demand is high so these are wines to secure quickly before they disappear into the cellars of eager collectors around the world. Domaine Hudelot-Noëllat s 2013s Written by MW Matthew Hemming Located in the village of Vougeot, this large estate has long had the ingredients for success old vines, some dating from the 1920s, and plots in some of the Cote d Or s finest vineyards, including prize holdings in Clos Vougeot, Romanee Saint Vivant and Richebourg. When I first visited the region, in 2006, this deep, cold and almost austere cellar was home to good value, solid, if slightly middle-of the-road red Burgundies. Today, as you probably know, they are regarded as producing some of the best examples of each of their appellations. Charles Van Canneyt, grandson of Alain Hudelot-Noellat, took the helm of the domaine in 2008, having completed his studies in Dijon. During the subsequent 7 years Charles has refined and honed his style and the wines today display greater purity, precision and terroir expression than ever before. I try to be wary of making pronouncements on Burgundy domaines based on my handful of visits each year but it seems as if, as Charles has found his feet at his family estate, he s gained the confidence to do less; simply allowing his wines to be expressive of origin and growing season. 2013 is, above all, a vintage that needed a light hand in the winery. The fruit was too delicate to sustain a too much winemaking makeup. Charles understanding of this is evident in his approach to stem inclusion in his 2013 ferments. In the ripe 2012s, whole bunch fermentation gave the wines a bold floral aspect, spiciness and textural element. In 13, the stems were not uniformly ripe enough for wholesale inclusion, which would have resulted in the extraction of coarse, green tannins. Charles, who still wanted the perfume and complexity of some stem influence, selected just the ripest stems and blended 20-25% of them back into the barrels to allow a delicate infusion rather than a more aggressive extraction of stem character. Similarly, the new oak has been dialled back to allow a greater purity of fruit expression. Village wines see just 20% new oak, with 30-50% for the 1er Crus. 2013 is a very successful vintage for Charles and Domaine Hudelot-Noellat. Whilst it s hard to go wrong with this range, I particularly recommend the great value offered by the Chambolle village and the lithe and balletic Vosne Romanee Beaux Monts.
