VVW News - March 2016 SPICY SICILIAN RED 2014 Etna Rosso (Terre Nere) After decades as America s most influential importer of Italian wines, a period during which he was instrumental in the dramatic improvements in Barolo and Barbaresco, Marc de Grazia became a winemaker himself, establishing Tenuta delle Terre Nere (Black Earth) on Mount Etna in Sicily. His vineyards, on the north slopes of the mountain, are among the highest elevation in Europe, and are planted with the local red varietal Nerello Mascalese. This 2014, the entry-level bottling, is a fabulous casual red. Medium-bodied, dry and spicy, it has the weight and texture of Pinot Noir, with remarkable intricacy and finesse for such a moderately priced wine. One of its charms is its versatility at the table, so feel free to try it with any meal you enjoy red wine with. 2014 Etna Rosso (Tenuta delle Terre Nere) $24.00 HALF-CASE SPECIAL 20 Percent Off $115.50 ($115.50/6 bottles = $19.25/bottle) HALF-CASE SAMPLER 20 PERCENT OFF Jean-Marc Boillot s 2014 White Burgundies One of our most popular offerings year after year, here is our 2014 sampler of Jean-Marc Boillot White Burgundies one Bourgogne Blanc, one Montagny, and one Rully. 2014 is an exciting vintage for White Burgundies, the best since 2010. Boillot s classic style is on display with tender Chardonnay fruit, refreshing citrusy acidity, just the barest background hint of oak, and long, minerally finishes that turn mouthwatering as the fruit flavors linger. The product of very conscientious winemaking, these are sophisticated Burgundies at very moderate prices. In fact, thanks to the weakness of the euro, prices are down 10 percent from the 2013s. 1. 2014 Bourgogne Blanc (Jean-Marc Boillot)... $ 30.00 2. 2014 Montagny Premier Cru (Jean-Marc Boillot)... $ 34.00 3. 2014 Rully Meix Cadot (Jean-Marc Boillot)... $ 39.00 BOILLOT 2014 WHITE BURGUNDY SAMPLER 2 bottles of each - 20 Percent Off - $165.00 ($165.00/6 bottles = $27.50/bottle) BURGUNDIAN PINOT NOIR BARGAIN 2013 Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Beaune (Cornu-Camus) Finding delicious Pinot Noir priced under $25 is a very rare thing, even from New World sources. Finding one from Burgundy? Good luck! But here is one, from the small Cote de Beaune producer Cornu-Camus. Their 2013 Bourgogne comes from the Hautes Cotes de Beaune, the hilly, forested, rural area to the west of the Cote de Beaune. Its bright ruby color and inviting aromas are immediately promising, and the wine lives up to the promise. Its bright, juicy, succulent Pinot Noir flavors sink into your palate and remain fresh and delicious from start to finish. It has the sort of irresistible deliciousness Burgundian Pinot Noir can only deliver when it is not structured for age. Its moderate alcohol, light tannins, and absence of oak character make it virtually quaffable. Our sample bottle was empty within half an hour. 2013 Bourgogne Hautes Cotes de Beaune (Cornu-Camus) $22.00 HALF-CASE SPECIAL 15 Percent Off $112.50 ($112.50/6 bottles = $18.75/bottle) SPECIAL EVENING TASTING 2013 Grand Cru Red Burgundies FOUR CORTONS AND FOUR CLOS VOUGEOTS Bouchard de Montille Girardin Liger-Belair Mongeard-Mugneret Meo-Camuzet TUESDAY MARCH 22 7pm & WEDNESDAY MARCH 23 7pm PRE-PAID RESERVATIONS REQUIRED COST $275

NEW PIEDMONT PRODUCER WITH BARGAIN PRICED REDS Podere Ruggeri Corsini Corsini is a tiny hamlet in the Barolo district, in a valley just north of Monforte d Alba. Ruggeri Corsini is the creation of Nicola Argamante and Lorendana Addari. They met as graduate students at the University of Turin, he in enology, she in viticulture. In 1995 they married, and purchased Corsini, a couple of houses and farm buildings surrounded by vines. Today they have 25 acres of vineyards and produce about 6000 cases of wine each year. He works mainly in the winery, she works mainly in the vineyards. We tasted their current releases with them last month when they were visiting California, and were blown away first by the inherent quality of each wine they presented, and then again by their remarkably attractive pricing. We bought four of them for the shop. MARCH SPECIAL - 15 PERCENT OFF on purchases of six or more bottles of Ruggeri Corsini wines Regular 15% Off Price Price 2014 Langhe Rosso Matot (Ruggeri Corsini)... $ 14.00 $ 11.90 This is their everyday red, a blend of Nebbiolo, Barbera, and Dolcetto. It has a very healthy-looking dark ruby color, and bright, almost sharp fruit aromas. Its flavors are pure and tasty. While light on its feet, it is packed with character, with a delicious, fresh finish. 2013 Barbera d Alba (Ruggeri Corsini)... $ 20.00 $ 17.00 Very dark ruby color, also very healthy looking, with a subtle but meaty aroma. Immediately attractive and easy drinking, but with an invigorating Italian bite. A lot of depth and character for a Barbera at this price. 2011 Barbera d Alba Superiore Armujan (Ruggeri Corsini)... $ 30.00 $ 25.00 Almost opaque dark ruby-black color. Rich, regal flavors packed with fruit and a hint of oak. An impressive big boy Barbera with a suave, classy finish. A lot of wine for the money. 2010 Barolo Bussia (Ruggeri Corsini)... $ 55.00 $ 46.75 Clear garnet red color with a deep, lean, serious Barolo aroma. Very classic Barolo style, still very tight, very focused, and not nearly ready, but with lovely freshness, exciting balance, and hidden depth. Again, a remarkably low price for a Barolo of this quality and ageworthiness. 2 NEW SINGLE VINEYARD RELEASES Samsara Pinot Noirs MARCH SPECIAL - 15 PERCENT OFF on purchases of three or more bottles of Samsara Pinot Noirs Regular 15% Off Price Price 2012 Pinot Noir Kessler-Haak (Samsara)... $ 50.00 $ 42.50 Bright ruby-red. Highly perfumed aromas of ripe red berries, potpourri and Asian spices are complemented by deeper notes of cola and licorice. Shows excellent clarity and thrust on the palate, offering spicy raspberry and bitter cherry flavors that become sweeter with air. Distinctly vibrant and focused, with silky tannins coming on late and adding grip to the long, mineraldriven finish. (93/100) - Josh Raynolds, Vinousmedia.com 2012 Pinot Noir Rancho La Vina (Samsara)... $ 55.00 $ 46.75 Vivid red. Sexy raspberry preserve and floral pastille aromas are complemented by smoky minerals and spicecake. Silky and round on the palate, with a zesty mineral quality adding lift to the pliant red fruit liqueur flavors. Nicely blends richness with vivacity and finishes sappy, focused and very long, with lingering floral character and smooth tannins coming up late. (93/100) - Josh Raynolds, Vinousmedia.com 2012 Pinot Noir Melville (Samsara)... $ 60.00 $ 51.00 Vivid ruby-red. Heady aromas of cherry, boysenberry, Indian spices and underbrush are sharpened by a zesty mineral quality. Juicy, sappy and concentrated, showing excellent depth and power to its smoke-tinged flavors of red and dark berry preserves and candied flowers. This fleshy, expansive pinot finishes with strong mineral cut, silky tannins and lingering floral character. (93/100) - Josh Raynolds, Vinousmedia.com

GREAT NEW VINTAGE OF A SANTA BARBERA STANDARD 2013 Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills (Melville) The 2013 Pinot Noir Estate Santa Rita Hills is gorgeous. Bright red berries, red currants, rose petals and mint all lift from the glass in a beautifully delineated Pinot endowed with striking beauty. This is a great introduction to the Melville wines and house style. 2016-2025 (92/100) Vivid ruby-red. Assertive aromas of raspberry, cherry and fresh rose, with Asian spice and woodsmoke accents building in the glass. Juicy and precise on the palate, offering gently sweet red berry flavors and a hint of candied rose. Shows impressive energy and clarity on the long, focused finish, which features a zesty mineral nuance. Really lively for the vintage and balanced to age. (92/100) - Josh Raynolds, Vinousmedia.com 2013 Pinot Noir Santa Rita Hills (Melville) $36.00 HALF-CASE SPECIAL 15 Percent Off $183.50 ($183.50/6 bottles = $30.58/bottle) 2012 Chablis Premier Crus & Grand Crus The 2012s are arguably the best wines made in the last 15 years. You had to pick early but if you did, the wines are fantastic as they possess plenty of Chablis character without being excessively austere. - Didier Seguier, Winemaker - William Fèvre MARCH SPECIAL - 15 PERCENT OFF on purchases of three or more bottles of 2012 Chablis Regular 15% Off DOMAINE ROMAIN COLLET Price Price The Collet family s holdings in Chablis go back to the late 1700s, and today include vineyard parcels in the very best Premier Cru and Grand Cru sites. Young Romain Collet pursues a classic style that emphasizes the Chablis terroir 2012 Chablis Montée de Tonnerre (Romain Collet)... $ 48.00 $ 40.80 2012 Chablis Valmur (Romain Collet)... $ 95.00 $ 80.75 2012 Chablis Les Clos (Romain Collet)...... $ 100.00 $ 85.00 DOMAINE WILLIAM FEVRE 2012 Chablis Vaillons (William Fèvre)... $ 65.00 $ 55.25 A discreet and still brooding nose offers up very fresh hints of dried yellow orchard fruit on the otherwise classic Chablis aromas of green fruit, osyter shell and wet stone. There is a beguiling succulence to the intense, precise and mineral-driven middle weight flavors that culminate in a clean, bone dry, balanced and strikingly persistent finish. 2019+ (91/100) 2012 Chablis Bougros-Côte Bouguerots (William Fèvre)... $ 125.00 $ 106.25 A cool, pure and ripe nose of white flowers, lemon, wet stone and sea breeze is trimmed in subtle wood nuances. There is a driving minerality to the gorgeously textured, intense and tension-filled medium weight flavors that possess excellent volume while sliding gracefully into a bone dry cuts-like-a-knife finish. This just exudes essence of Kimmeridgian and blind it would be just about impossible to guess anything but Chablis. A great vintage for this wine. 2022+ (95/100) 2012 Chablis Valmur (William Fèvre)... $ 135.00 $ 114.75 An expressive and elegant nose features notes of salt water, citrus, mineral reduction and cool yet ripe green fruit. There is terrific power and concentration to the dense and palate drenching flavors that brim with both minerality and vibrancy before concluding in a borderline painfully intense and explosive finish that is bone dry though not particularly austere. This is a knockout. 2024+ (94/100) 2012 Chablis Les Clos (William Fèvre)... $ 140.00 $ 119.00 There is noticeable if discreet wood on the ripe and intensely floral nose that also reflects notes of pear, mineral reduction, white peach and algae. This is an imposingly scaled wine with its broad and muscular mouth feel that exudes a seemingly endless reserve of minerality on the almost painfully intense finish that delivers flat out amazing length. This is a very powerful wine that is akin to sucking on rocks it is so mineral-inflected. This is positively brilliant. 2024+ (96/100) 3

4 A MODERN DAY CLASSIC IN THE MAKING 2006 BaroloS 2006 Barolo is a modern-day classic in the making. The best reveal extraordinary balance as well as significant potential to improve in bottle. The finest 2006 Barolos and there is no shortage of fine bottles reveal a modern expression of ripeness married to a firm sense of structure that readers are likely to find immensely appealing, although many of the top wines will require cellaring. MARCH SPECIAL - 20 PERCENT OFF on purchases of three or more bottles of 2006 Barolos Regular 20% Off Price Price 2006 Barolo Gramolere (Manzone)... $ 75.00 $ 60.00 The 2006 Gramolere is beautiful wine that is full of promise. It possesses an attractive level of plumpness, with suggestions of violets, dark plums, spices and menthol that flow effortlessly from its medium-bodied frame. 2012-2026 (91-93/100) 2006 Barolo La Villa (Seghesio)... $ 78.00 $ 62.40 I was completely floored by Seghesio s 2006 La Villa, easily the best vintage of this wine I have ever tasted. Dark plums, cherries, violets, minerals and spices emerge from this deceptively mid-weight Barolo. The wine gains muscle in the glass; yet retains elements of etherealness that are quite attractive. This looks to be a rare 2006 that is accessible relatively early. The wine s balance, poise and sense of harmony are terrific. This is a great effort from Seghesio. 2014-2026 (93/100) 2006 Barolo Giachini (Fratelli Revello)... $ 80.00 $ 64.00 Revello s 2006 Giachini emerges from the glass with dark, wild cherries, menthol, spices, violets, roses and minerals. This is a decidedly austere, almost classic Barolo, where the structural components seem to dominate over the fruit in the wine s balance. 2016-2026 (91/100) 2006 Barolo Brunate (Mario Marengo)... $ 98.00 $ 78.40 The 2006 Brunate is an exotic, beguiling wine laced with dark red fruit, mocha, coffee beans, spices and plums. There is superb concentration and depth, all of which carries through to a long, resonating finish. This is a rather dark style for La Morra, but everything is impeccably balanced. 2012-2026 (93/100) 2006 Barolo Marenca (Luigi Pira)... $ 110.00 $ 88.00 Pira s Marenca is one of the biggest, most extroverted wines being made today in Piedmont and the 2006 is no exception. It shows a touch more opulence than Pira s Margheria in its intense, dark fruit. Readers will find incredible harmony here, and a finish that lasts forever. Iron, tar, licorice and smoke linger on the powerful finish. This is a marvelous Barolo from Pira, but patience is the key. 2016-2026 (93/100) 2006 Barolo Bricco Fiasco (Azelia)... $ 125.00 $ 100.00 The 2006 Bricco Fiasco is simply magnificent. It is impressively powerful, but the layers of flavor are beautifully filled out. Exotic, ripe red fruit, smoke and menthol are but a few of the nuances that gradually emerge as this refined and impeccably elegant wine rises from the glass. The French oak is beautifully integrated, while the wine s weight and sheer harmony leave a lasting impression. 2014-2026 (94/100) 2006 Barolo Cannubi (E. Pira)... $ 135.00 $ 108.00 The 2006 Barolo Cannubi exudes the warmth of this south-facing site in its open, generous bouquet. The Cannubi is opulent and round in an expansive, generous expression of dark red fruit that covers the palate from start to finish. Sweet spices and flowers add complexity on the long, round close. This is another drop-dead gorgeous Barolo from Chiara Boschis. 2014-2026 (94/100) 2006 Barolo San Rocco (Azelia)... $ 135.00 $ 108.00 The 2006 San Rocco is sensual and enveloping. It s hard to know where to start, as fruit, acidity and structure are all beautifully integrated and refined. Still incredibly young, the wine will require a bit of patience, but the purity of the fruit is impossible to miss even at this early stage. The finish alone is eternal. 2016-2026 (95/100)

2013 Red Burgundies Domaine Thibault Liger-Belair Thibault Liger-Belair, told me that in 2013 Sugars were barely average yet what is so interesting, indeed surprisingly so, about this vintage is just how good the phenolic maturities are. I really didn t expect this because usually just before harvest you see sugars spike rather than phenolic maturities. As to the wines, they have continued to get better and better during the élevage and frankly it s hard to predict just how good they re going to be. One aspect though that I really appreciate is their terrific transparency as you can easily see the underlying terroir. MARCH SPECIAL - 15 PERCENT OFF on purchases of six or more bottles of 2013 Red Burgundies Regular 15% Off Price Price 2013 Bourgogne Rouge Les Deux Terres (Liger-Belair)... $ 25.00 $ 21.25 2013 Bourgogne Rouge Les Grands Chaillots (Liger-Belair)... $ 36.00 $ 30.60 2013 Moulin-a-Vent Vieilles Vignes (Liger-Belair)... $ 36.00 $ 30.60 There is good freshness and verve to the dense and structured medium-bodied flavors thanks to the abundant amount of dry extract, all wrapped in a powerful, serious and long finish. This is a rustic and old school Moulin-a-Vent but if you have the patience this is well worth your attention. 2020+ (89-91/100) 2013 Moulin-a-Vent La Roche (Liger-Belair)... $ 45.00 $ 38.25 2013 Nuits-Saint-Georges La Charmotte (Liger-Belair)... $ 90.00 $ 76.50 There is a generous mouth feel to the textured, delicious and supple medium weight flavors that possess both good vibrancy and a lovely mineral streak on the ever-so-slightly rustic but solidly persistent finale. A quality Nuits villages that should drink well relatively young. 2017+ (87-90/100) 2013 Gevrey-Chambertin La Croix des Champs (Liger-Belair)... $ 90.00 $ 76.50 A notably floral nose offers notes of plum, freshly turned earth and red currant scents. I very much like the underlying tension and fine delineation of the middle weight flavors that also exude a fine bead of minerality on the mildly austere and rustic finish. This is notably more structured than the Charmotte and will need a few years of cellaring first. 2020+ (88-90/100) 2013 Vosne-Romanée Aux Réas (Liger-Belair)... $ 120.00 $ 102.00 There is excellent richness and volume to the seductively textured flavors that possess good mid-palate fat before concluding in a clean, saline and balanced finish. This is very Vosne in character and should also be approachable in its youth. 2019+ (88-90/100) 2013 Chambolle-Musigny Les Gruenchers (Liger-Belair)... $ 165.00 $ 140.25 2013 Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Saint Georges (Liger-Belair)... $ 165.00 $ 140.25 A floral, cool and unusually airy nose offers up notes of plum, red berries and pungent earth that exhibits barely discernible hints of wood spice. There is good muscle to the powerful and almost painfully intense big-bodied flavors that offer excellent richness and drive on the strikingly long, well-balanced and beautifully well-delineated finish. 2025+ (91-94/100) 2013 Corton Les Renardes (Liger-Belair)... $ 210.00 $ 178.50 A classic Renardes nose is both complex and overtly sauvage as it offers up notes of relatively elegant red and black pinot fruit. There is fine intensity to the muscular yet round and generously proportion flavors that exude a fine bead of minerality on the velvety finish. This really builds from the mid-palate and delivers excellent length. 2023+ (90-93/100) 2013 Clos Vougeot (Liger-Belair)... $ 265.00 $ 225.25 There is excellent volume to the impressively rich and punchy medium weight plus flavors that deliver very fine length on the energetic, firm and quite serious finish that is a bit less youthfully austere than usual. This is blessed with good underlying material and should mature well. 2025+ (91-94/100) 2013 Charmes-Chambertin (Liger-Belair)... $ 265.00 $ 225.25 5

LIGER-BELAIR 2013 RED BURGUNDIES FRIDAY 3/11 & SATURDAY 3/12 I will say that 2013 is the kind of vintage that I absolutely love. It s a burg geek s vintage par excellence. The best wines are superbly fresh and transparent as the underlying terroir is truly on parade. We too have come to love the 2013 Red Burgundies. They are not only fresh and transparent, but with admirable substance and concentration. MELVILLE & SAMSARA PINOT NOIRS TUESDAY 3/15 & WEDNESDAY 3/16 Melville has been one of Santa Barbara s very best Pinot Noir sources pretty much since Santa Barbera Pinot Noir became a category. Samsara is a micro-producer, owned by Chad Melville and his wife, allowing him to explore stylistic avenues outside the family winery, and with a track record arguably equal to that of Melville. Both have spectacular releases on the market. Here are four Pinot Noirs from each.

AGED CHATEAUNEUF-DU-PAPES THURSDAY 3/17 Why cellar Châteauneuf-du-Pape? This tasting will answer that. Young Châteauneuf-du-Pape can be very satisfying, even delicious, in a raw, virile, but ultimately unfinished sort of way. Mature Châteauneuf-du-Papes are still plenty virile, but also display balance, complexity and the je ne sais quoi that makes aged wine so compelling. 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape La Crau (Vieux Télégraphe); 2005 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Beaucastel); 2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape Renaissance (Cristia); 2004 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Clos des Papes); 2004 Châteauneufdu-Pape (Beaucastel); 2003 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Beaucastel); 2001 Châteauneuf-du-Pape (Beaucastel). 2006 BAROLOS FRIDAY 3/18 & SATURDAY 3/19 2006 Barolo is a modern-day classic in the making. The finest 2006 Barolos reveal a modern expression of ripeness married to a firm sense of structure that readers are likely to find immensely appealing. Here is a killer lineup of 2006 Barolos, eight expressive bottlings that promise to still be plenty feisty at ten years old. Every recent vintage has been excellent. When you taste such compelling Mourvèdre-based wines, you wonder why the varietal is not more widely-planted. But it is clear that Bandol is a terroir tailor-made for Mourvèdre, and Tempier s mastery of the grape is second to none. Here are five vintages of La Migoua and three of Cabassaou. 2013 Bandol La Migoua (Tempier); 2012 Bandol La Migoua (Tempier); 2011 Bandol La Migoua (Tempier); 2010 Bandol La Migoua (Tempier); 2008 Bandol La Migoua (Tempier); 2011 Bandol Cabassaou (Tempier); 2010 Bandol Cabassaou (Tempier); 2008 Bandol Cabassaou (Tempier).
