As usual, Rod did an outstanding job as master of ceremonies and eliciting information from the award winners as to the techniques that they used in their wine making. All attendees had the opportunity to taste all wines entered to help develop their palate and understand what a winning wine tastes like. Member Spotlight Editors note: This is where we spotlight members so that we can all get to know one another. If you are interested in being spotlighted let me know. Or, I will ask you! Al and Linda Schafer Al Schafer joined SWGGA several years ago to presumably Develop my palate. He continues to try many wines during our meetings, but we have doubts if it s really for research and development. Al and Linda, married for 51 years, moved to Grass Valley in 1999 to pursue hobbies and arts. Al practiced architecture in the San Francisco for over 40 years, while Linda s career was in bookkeeping and office management. They have 2 adult daughters and 5 grandchildren in the North Bay Area. Both are involved with several non-profit organizations in our community (Music in the Mountains, CAL Alumni, Kiwanis, Hospice, Pioneer Arts, D.A.R., etc.) and have provided their residence for our Annual SWGGA Picnic on two occasions. He also is proud to be a member of SWGGA s Scholarship Committee. Attending most of our monthly meetings, he enjoys the speakers addressing subjects from irrigation to pruning, and our group s experiments with oaking and blending wines. Our annual presentations on Can this Wine be Saved? and the reviews of Fair Award Winners are a must (pun intended). He says, Meeting neighbors with similar interests in grape growing, wine making and food pairing, as well as making new friends, has been a pleasure. Linda attends several meetings per year, but generally prefers to relax at home in the evenings; she joins us for most wine tours and social events. Al is happy to have participated in SWGGA s Zinfandel Wine Making Comparison in 2014 with 8 other members. His Schafer s Mill, Three Mustketeers Zinfandel (honoring his 2 partners) ranked a silver medal at the 2015 Nevada County Fair, and is currently resting in his cellar to temper its bright tannins. Linda made Santa Rosa Plum Wine this year, but didn t make the deadline for entrance to the Fair Competition, so you ll see it next year! Bernie Zimmerman medalled this year with his Plum Blush made from the Schafer s plums. The next time you see Al and Linda, say hi!

Nevada City Uncorked This very pleasant wine and food tasting experience was held on August 27th, 2016 in downtown Nevada City. Twenty wineries from Nevada and Placer Counties participated. Each was paired with a different food vendor and located in various inns, restaurants, galleries at other sites. Organized by our own Rod Byers, many of our commercial winery members participated: Clavey, Double Oak, Gray Pine and Solune. Jacques Mercier of Solune pouring at the Broad Street Inn Guy Lauterbach of Gray Pine pouring at Lefty's Making Wine 2016 SWGGA members and first time winemakers Hosea Bostic and Jon Smedberg are learning the process by working with Bernie Zimmerman as he makes a Zinfandel rose'. If any other association members are interested in learning how to make wine, or improving their wine making skills, let us know. There are still grapes to pick, crush, and wine to make.
