Amazon Almond
The Kahai Tree Caryodendron orinocense Karsten is an Amazon tree that grows wild along the eastern base of the Andes mountains in Colombia, Venezuela, Ecuador and Peru. This majestic tree can reach over 40 meters in height and generates very positive environmental impacts. It captures large amounts of CO2, enhances soil, and helps in watershed renewal. It is one of the most promising species of Amazon biodiversity, reason why it has been studied for over 60 years. Unfortunately, these trees are being deforested for firewood, making it more and more difficult to find them in the wild.
Ancestral Uses The Kahai tree produces highly nutritious nuts, which are an important food source for communities in the region. Edible oil is extracted from the nuts, which is used for cooking as well as for skin care. The remaining flour, after extracting the oil, is rich in protein, minerals, omegas and fiber. It is used for cooking, as food supplement and to prepare nut milk. Due to the healing properties of the oil, natives use it as an emollient; in the treatment of skin irritations and burn injuries; and for cicatrization processes. The fruit peel is used as cattle feed or as compost. The shell has high heating power, with slow combustion, which makes it an excellent bio fuel. For its multiple uses, some communities have named the tree: The Vegetable Cow
