Introducing New Perennials for 2016 Anemone Whirlwind (Windflower, Japanese Anemone) Anemone Whirlwind This fall blooming anemone has ruffled, semi-double white flowers with yellow centers atop 36 tall stems. The dark green foliage is lovely in a woodland garden. Prefers to be planted in part to full sun in moist, well-drained soil. Deer and rabbit resistant. Zone 5. Astilbe (False Spirea) Astilbe Purpurkerze (Purple Candles), Astilbe Younique Ruby Red Purpurkerze is part of the chinensis family of Astilbes. While no Astilbe likes to be dried out, this group is known for being more sun and drought tolerant than other species of Astilbe. This tall, upright variety has mounding dark green foliage to 24 tall and flower stalks up to 42. The flowers start out a dark purplish red and fade to lighter shades of purple as they age. Astilbe Purpurkerze Astilbe Younique Ruby Red is an addition to the Younique series. This series is known for its compact size and floriferous nature sometimes having more flowers than foliage. Baptisia (False Indigo) Baptisia Decadence Pink Truffles, Baptisia Decadence Sparkling Sapphires, Baptisia Decadence Vanilla Crème, Baptisia Grape Taffy Baptisias have been one of my favorite plants for many years but it can be hard to find a spot for them in your garden considering how big they can get. Happily, breeders such as Hans Hansen have been working to bring us compact Baptisia we can all enjoy. Introducing three additions to the Decadence series from Proven Winners. Pink Truffles is a very unique color in Baptisia. A lovely soft pink flower with a pale yellow keel. Sparkling Sapphires is an intense violet blue. Vanilla Cream has pastel yellow buds that open to creamy white flowers. Also bred by Hans Hansen, Grape Taffy is a beautiful reddish purple with a buff yellow keel. All of our new additions are compact varieties ranging from 2-3 1/2 tall. Zones 4. Deer resistant.

Campanula (Bellflower) Campanula carpatica Rapido Blue, Campanula carpatica Rapido White One of the earliest blooming carpatica types, the Rapido series is an improvement on the classic Clips series. 1.5 cup shaped blooms appear up to 4 weeks earlier than other carpatica types. 5-7 tall. 5-8 wide. Zone 4. Deer resistant. Fruit Punch Dianthus (Pinks) Dianthus Fruit Punch Cranberry Cocktail, Dianthus Fruit Punch Maraschino, Dianthus Fruit Punch Sweetie Pie All three of these additions to the Fruit Punch series are mat forming and have silvery-green foliage. Cranberry Cocktail has hot magenta pink 2 double blooms with a sweet, spicy fragrance. Zone 4. Maraschino has cherry-red 1.5 double blooms with a burgundy eye. Zone 4. Sweetie Pie has 1.5 semi double blooms that range from lavender to blush pink. Zone 4. Fire Island Dicentra (Fringed Bleeding Heart) Dicentra Fire Island This vigorous selection has blue fern-like foliage with magenta-red blooms with white tips. Because Fire Island is sterile, it puts its energy into producing flowers as long as there is adequate moisture. Full sun to part shade. 12-15 tall. Zone 3. Echinacea (Coneflower) Echinacea Purple Emperor, Echinacea Red Knee High These hardy, drought tolerant, deer resistant plants are a garden classic. The conical center provides a perfect landing spot for butterflies during the summer and feeds the bird during the winter. They look good in both formal and wild gardens. Deer resistant. Great cut flower. Zone 4. An addition to Arie Blom s Butterfly series, Purple Emperor has 3.5-4 large magenta-purple single flowers with orange brown cones on sturdy stems over a mound of deep green foliage. 15-18 tall. Blooms June-Sept. Full sun to part shade. Middle of the border. A sport of Kim s Knee High with deeper magenta-pink flowers and copper-orange to bronze cones. Blooms June-August. 18-24 tall. The backs of the petals are either pink or white lending a two-toned appearance to the flowers. Strong stems. Pink Parachutes Hemerocallis (Daylily) Hemerorcallis Desert Flame. Hemerocallis Ruffled Pastel Cheers Both of our new daylilys are tetraploids which means that they have twice as many chromosomes as a regular daylily. Tetraploids tend to have greater vigor and larger flowers with thicker petals than regular diploid daylilys. Zone 3. Desert Flame is a re-bloomer with 5.5 red-orange flowers. 36 tall. Ruffled Pastel Cheers is an outstanding performer, producing as many as 40 buds per flower scape. Clematis Clematis (Clematis) Clematis Abilene, Clematis Chelsea, Clematis Chevalier, Clematis Countess of Wessex, Clematis Crystal Fountain, Clematis Diamantina, Clematis Edda, Clematis Empress, Clematis Franziska, Clematis Huldine, Clematis Sally, Clematis Samaritan Jo Clematis are beautiful plants that are at home along fences, on trellises and in a container. In general they prefer to have their roots in the shade so be sure to mulch around the base of the plant. One of the greatest mysteries with a clematis is how do you prune them? They have 3 pruning types so when you buy your clematis, make a note in your garden journal. Type 1: Blooms on old wood. Prune right after flowering. Remove dead or weak stems. Type 2: Prune in early spring after leaf buds have started to swell. Prune dead material above swelling buds. Be sure to secure to trellis. Type 3: Blooms on new growth. Prune in February or March. The first spring after planting, prune all types to 10-12 tall. The Boulevard series from Raymond Evison is bred to be compact, they range from 2-4 tall, and are free flowering, meaning they flower along the whole stem rather than just at the top. They will look fantastic on your patio in a pot, just be sure to plant them in the ground in the fall. Abilene reaches only 4 tall, a perfect size for a patio pot. Pruning group 3.
