Introducing New Perennials for 2016 Anemone Whirlwind (Windflower, Japanese Anemone) Anemone Whirlwind This fall blooming anemone has ruffled, semi-double white flowers with yellow centers atop 36 tall stems. Astilbe (False Spirea) Astilbe Purpurkerze (Purple Candles), Astilbe Younique Ruby Red Purpurkerze is part of the chinensis family of Astilbes. While no Astilbe likes to be dried out, this group is known for being more sun and drought tolerant than other species of Astilbe. This tall, upright variety has mounding dark green foliage to 24 tall and flower stalks up to 42. The flowers start out a dark purplish red and fade to lighter shades of purple as they age. Astilbe Purpurkerze Astilbe Younique Ruby Red is an addition to the Younique series. This series is known for its compact size and floriferous nature sometimes having more flowers than foliage. Crisp white flowers bring in the bees and butterflies from early to mid summer. This upright Veronica is perfect for the middle of the border. The dark green foliage is more disease resistant than the older varieties of Veronica. Plant in full sun to part shade. 14-16 tall. Zone 4. Excalibur Yucca (Adam s Needle) Yucca filimentosa Excalibur Excalibur forms a very uniform spiky clump of blue-green to gray-green leaves with curly white filament along the edges. Grass Prairie Winds Apache Rose Panicum PW (Switch Grass) Panicum Prairie Winds Apache Rose Apache Rose has an upright columnar habit. The tips of the gray-green leaves become flushed with a hint of rosy-red in the fall. Rather than cream or tan inflorescences that is typical of Panicum, Apache Rose has rose colored panicles. This sturdy plant will remain upright throughout the winter in all but the heaviest snows, providing shelter for birds. 4 tall. Zone 4.
Clematis Clematis (Clematis) Clematis Abilene, Clematis Chelsea, Clematis Chevalier, Clematis Countess of Wessex, Clematis Crystal Fountain, Clematis Diamantina, Clematis Edda, Clematis Empress, Clematis Franziska, Clematis Huldine, Clematis Sally, Clematis Samaritan Jo Clematis are beautiful plants that are at home along fences, on trellises and in a container. In general they prefer to have their roots in the shade so be sure to mulch around the base of the plant. One of the greatest mysteries with a clematis is how do you prune them? They have 3 pruning types so when you buy your clematis, make a note in your garden journal. Type 1: Blooms on old wood. Prune right after flowering. Remove dead or weak stems. Type 2: Prune in early spring after leaf buds have started to swell. Prune dead material above swelling buds. Be sure to secure to trellis. Type 3: Blooms on new growth. Prune in February or March. The first spring after planting, prune all types to 10-12 tall. The Boulevard series from Raymond Evison is bred to be compact, they range from 2-4 tall, and are free flowering, meaning they flower along the whole stem rather than just at the top. They will look fantastic on your patio in a pot, just be sure to plant them in the ground in the fall. Abilene reaches only 4 tall, a perfect size for a patio pot. A rebloomer, blooming first in early summer and again in late summer. Abilene has 4 two-toned ruffled pink flowers with yellow anthers.
