PARCEL LOTS 13-14 13 Château Cheval Blanc - Vintage 1982 St. Emilion 1ts, 12vlbsl, 1nl, 1lstl, three bottles different importer Revealing considerable amber in its dark plum/garnet color, this intensely fragrant 1982 is somewhat of a paradox in that the front end suggests full maturity, but the mid-palate, finish, and overall texture denote a closedwine. A gorgeously sweet entry displays flavors of caramel, roasted coffee, jammy red and black fruits, coconut, and smoke. It is fat and full-bodied, with considerable tannin, structure, and muscle in the finish. Flamboyantly rich and precocious early in life, it is goingthrough an awkward stage where the tannin is present, but it is also sexy, juicy, and formidablystructured. When the 1982 Cheval Blanc s component parts become totally in sync, it will be capable of meriting a three-digit rating. The 1970 had nice spice to the nose, was integrated, and was more together than any of the previous ones. Older feel...round, smooth, satiny, and nutty...definitely mature. The color remains a healthy, opaque garnet with only slight amber at the edge. A huge, penetrating bouquet of sweet black fruits, smoked nuts, tobacco, and tar soars from the glass extraordinary density and extraction of fruit, massive, full-bodied, unctuouslytextured flavors that reveal little tannin, and copious quantities of glycerin and alcohol. It is a fabulously rich, monumental example of a fully mature Haut-Brion that exhibits no signs of decline. Awesome! Seductive, rich, grape and cassis-laden nose with just a pinch of gravel very chocolaty seductive, bready spice as well round, rich and ooh la la on the palate so young, ripe, and fresh more gravel and slate on the palate with excellent grip still and a long, lingering finish with very fresh acids delicious, dry, milk chocolate flavors and a great, dusty, balanced, and seductively firm finish very meaty more rich and saucy and brute strength than the 59 Mouton served beside it the alcohol and gravel really come out more with food I vacillated between 97 and 98 points. This has always been a prodigious effort (it was the debut vintage for Jean Delmas). It is extremely full-bodied, with layers of viscous,sweet fruit. This wine is akin to eating candy. Consistently an astonishing wine! Intensely flavored and penetrating, with strong acids giving the flavors terrific cut and grip. My second bottle showed even more extravagantly expressivearomas of hot stones, tobacco, minerals and marzipan; a denser, silkier palate impression, with more obvious roasted Graves character; and an uncanny combination of sheer sweetness with structure and grip. It has always reminded me of what the 1959 must have tasted like in its youth, butit is even richer and more compelling aromatically. The wine exhibits an opaque ruby/purple color, as well as a sweet nose of jammy fruit, tobacco, spicy oak, minerals, and smoke. Fabulously concentrated, with huge levels of fruit, extract, and glycerin, this wine is nearly viscous because of its thickness and richness. Low acidity gives the wine even more appeal and adds to its precociousness. The wine has not budged in development since it was first bottled, although it has always provided thrilling drinking because of its voluptuous texture. Super-concentrated, and now beginning to shed enough tannin so that it can be fully appreciated, this enormously constituted La Mission-Haut-Brion has developed that fabulous Graves set of aromatics - tobacco, black fruits, minerals, roasted herbs, and cedar. Huge, massive, thick, and succulent, with moderate tannin, and some amber notes at the edge it comes closest in style to resembling the 1945, with a hint of the sweet, ripe 1959. It is very full bodied, rich, and supple. This layered, concentrated wine can be drunk now, but promises to be even better with additional bottle age. An old school La Mission, it is a tour de force that should continue to age effortlessly for another 40+ years. 45 Château La Mission Haut Brion - Vintage 1989 Graves I am certainly not going to argue with anyone who believes La Mission-Haut-Brion s 1989 is every bit as profound as the 1989 Haut-Brion. It is a spectacular wine, and as it ages in the bottle, it is quickly becoming one of my all-time favorite La Mission-Haut-Brions, ranking alongside the 1982, 1975, 1961, 1959, and 1955. The 1989 boasts a dense, thick, purple color, followed bya sweet, roasted cassis, chocolatey-scented nose with whiffs of tobacco, tar, and minerals. The wine is extremely full-bodied, unctuously-textured, sweet, jammy, and rich. Although it is still a youthful, unformed wine, it is alreadydelicious to drink. Made from 100% Merlot, and fermented and aged in 100% new oak barrels, this wine is one of the most concentrated young Bordeaux I have ever tasted. On each of the three occasions I tasted it, my notes contained the expression: amust buy! According to some old-timers, the wine has been fully mature for almost 30 years. It possesses that extraordinary Lafite fragrance of minerals, lead pencil, cedar, and spice. It is velvety-textured, wonderfully round, and sweet, but so well-delineated and balanced. As this wine has aged, it appears to be less of a sure bet. In most cases, it has been an outstanding wine, as the bottle tasted in December suggested. This massive wine may be the biggest, largestscaled Lafite I have ever tasted. Very exotic spice to the nose, intertwined beautifully with its tannins and alcohol - it left a doublehelix of an impression due to its intricacy on the black/ purple side of fruit with a sprinkle of cinammon in there longest and deepest nose by far of the first three a chocolate-covered rose thing develops that borders on mocha much more tannins that stay silky and linger well long acids to match. Allen said that this wine saw 100% new oak and added that the most expensive part about making great Burgundy was not the new oak, but rather keeping the yields low, especially for those who use the stems. More Krug-like than Mesnillike. The color is reminiscent of a big, white, toasted, oakbarrel Burgundy even the scent points in that direction. Ithas an oriental, spicy nose. Toffee, honey, coffee, linden, cream, butterscotch, sun-ripened oranges: it s got everything! Enveloped in a Corton-Charlemagne-like fat, nutty, enormous taste. The superb taste is also on the dark, masculine side, with truffles, duck liver, mushroom, earth cellar, wood, and fish. The fruit is by no means ingratiating, but the depth and breath of the wine are amazing. The aftertaste is actually one of the longest I ve ever experienced! The magnificent aromatic profile includes scents of cedar, caramel, coffee, toffee, chocolate, and gobs of jammy black-cherry and currant fruit. It could easily be mistaken for an old, magnificent Pomerol given its voluptuous texture, glorious richness, unctuosity, and phenomenal concentration, fat, and length. Tasty yet a touch medicinal with its alcoholic edges, as Port is prone to be when it becomes ancient, it was very smooth and soft, which had me guessing 1955, but I should have known better. I ll get it right next time.
