Highlights of the trip included visits to both houses of legislature, the reception ballroom, various offices including the governor s office, information about the architecture and symbolism inside the capitol, some interesting stories, and a mock trial in the state supreme court. Students had a great time. Make sure and ask them about what they learned. Thanks to all parent chaperones for your help! Camp Seymour Packets: An information packet went home last week with various information and forms about our 1
upcoming trip to Camp Seymour. Please read through the information carefully (including the parts to read over with your child) and sign and return the necessary forms and payment ASAP if you haven t already done so. Please let me know if you have any questions about camp. Attached to the last page of the letter is a camp menu to preview (our meals will be starting Wednesday, dinner). Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. The Elementary Spanish Festival for grades K-5 has been moved to Tuesday, June 5th in the Brighton gym. On this day students will bring authentic foods form the 20 Spanish-speaking countries to share with others. There will also be displays with information about each country that have been assembled using work from different grades. Grades K-3 perform Spanish songs they have learned in the classroom. Parents who volunteer to help are welcome to enjoy the delicious foods. Please help your child choose a food from the links provided in the Food Assignments document below. BRING YOUR PRINTED FOOD/RECIPE TO YOUR NEXT SPANISH CLASS. Cooked foods/recipes are due on June 5th. Parent volunteers may sign up at https://www.signupgenius.com/go/4090945a9aa22a0f58- elementary. Thank you for your help. For questions please contact Cynthia Gahan directly at cynthia.gahan@nlcinc.com. Language Arts: This week we finished our reading of The Fighting Ground by Avi. Students also continued with persuasive writing, examining different persuasive techniques used in advertising and wrote their own persuasive ads incorporating techniques like bandwagon, loaded words, facts and figures, testimonial and many others. All of this work is setting the stage for their upcoming persuasive essays later this month. Social Studies: This week we examined more causes of the American Revolution, specifically the Boston Massacre, and how Paul Revere s artwork of the event was used as propaganda to persuade colonies to join the revolutionary cause. Math (Mohr s Group): Short math this week due to our field trip, a mindfulness workshop, and a Games of the World assembly. On Monday and Thursday students worked on fraction division. On Friday students continued with their Design a Perfect Classroom projects. They are coming along nicely! Math (Colleen s/now Mrs. Walsh s Group): Students did some review work on integers as well as some mixed fraction review in addition to the work above (design projects). 2
BIZTOWN: (Not until June, but good to get on your radar) Online Volunteer Training- One of the most exciting changes we are implementing this year is Online Volunteer Training. This online training video takes the place of the mandatory 2 hour training that took place before the school visit in prior school years. The training video lasts about 25 minutes, and it is crucial that parents watch the training video online before their JA BizTown experience as it will help them feel more comfortable with their role in JA BizTown. At the end of the video, we ask all volunteers to proceed to Step Two, which is confirming they have watched the online training video. The second step will show us which volunteers have watched the online training and which have not. You will receive a link to this online volunteer training to forward to your volunteers 6 weeks prior to your visit. It is still mandatory for parents to arrive 45 minutes earlier than students on the student visit day. Here is the training link, just scroll down to the bottom of the page and you ll see the links to all the info (make sure it s the JA Biztown, not the Finance Park or other programs). http://jawashington.org/volunteer Our start time is about 9:30, and they would like our parent volunteers to be there 45 minutes earlier, at about 8:45. Our parents signed up to help so far are: Mae, Heidi, Teresa, and Nicola. We need 4 parents minimum, but if others would still like to join that would be great. Thanks! Camp Seymour Menu Information: On the menu there are items marked (v) vegetarian, (gf) gluten free, (df) dairy free, (sf) soy free, and (ef) egg free. At those meals there will be vegetarian, gluten free, dairy free, soy free, or egg free food available provided by us for those participants. Any of the meals that don t have the (v), (gf), (df), (sf), or (ef) on them are meals when the participants will need to bring their own food. Food brought in should be store bought and unopened (as opposed to homemade which we are not supposed to store and heat up in our kitchen). We recommend that participants bringing their own food bring it in coolers (for each individual labeled with his or her name and which meal the food is for) and in dry bags (labeled just like for the coolers). The one or two items we ask parents NOT to send with their kids for food is any peanut or tree nut items. We cannot store that in our kitchen due to the number of allergies around those foods. Parents who have additional questions are more than welcome to contact the Kitchen Manager Amy Rogala directly (arogala@ymcapkc.org). Also, in some cases there are participants that have such allergies/intolerances to gluten that they will get sick if their food has any cross contamination with gluten foods. Those participants should email Amy in general to touch base. 3
Participants can bring homemade food if 1) It s not stored in the camp kitchen. Refrigerated or frozen foods would need to be stored in the teacher housing. 2) No peanut or tree nut products (including almond milk). 3) Participants utilize the microwave or hot water on the coffee and tea bar (homemade food cannot enter our kitchen to be warmed; only the main dining hall).
