CONNECTION Vol. 7 No. 6 June 2004 JRN TO RAISE THE JOLLY ROGER LEADER OF THE BUCKET BRIGADE Building on the success of the Foley, AL KFC/LJS, JRN plans to reopen the Antioch, TN KFC as a 2 in 1 with Long John Silver. Plans are in the works to open several more KFC/LJS restaurants in the near future. This will require extensive planning and training. For example, see the note and photos below. We recently had Lou Snider, Tony George, Debbie Hunter and Terry Jennings in Foley, AL training on Long John Silver. They were led by Yum Implementation Coaches Randi Cohen and Steve Smith. We enjoyed having them in our area and wish their success with their new KL (KFC/LJS) in Antioch, Tennessee. George Embling, Area Manager for Foley. Jack Hager, JRN Regional Manager, was the first winner of the Bucket Award given by President Gregg Dedrick. This picture of Jack (right) and Gregg (left) hangs in the KFC Hall of Fame at the headquarters in Louisville, KY. (photo of photo by Tyrone Neal) Margaret Lipham (right) trains Tony George at the LJS Dishing station. Debbie Hunter looks on as Lou Snider cooks. Behind Debbie is Stacie Cacho.

JRN CONNECTION June 2004 Vol. 7, No. 6 2 NEWS FROM THE TRENCHES SPRINGHILL ON TOP Chris Capps I wanted to recognize a team that I felt truly exemplified what "Customer Mania" is all about. I visited the team on Springhill Ave. in Mobile, Alabama today. The RGM of the restaurant was Eddie VonLochausen. Talk about customer mania, this guy should be on the poster! He is very involved with everything in the restaurant, and still takes the time to stop and suggestive sell apple turnovers to a customer as he walks by!! I heard one of his closings today as "Thanks for stopping by 'Chicken Capital USA'". Now if that's not paying attention to advertising, I'm not sure what is. Not only Eddie showed this behavior, but the entire team was SUPER focused. Mike Driver, AUM, actually did a speed exercise with a team member to show her how it felt to stand in line for two minutes. This team member was so concerned that she was not meeting her speed target and SHE wanted to do something about it. Playing in the kitchen area was the training video for Oven Roasted strips. I wondered about this until a team member walked by me reciting the steps. They have been watching/listening to the training videos for some time now. I guess if they hear it enough, it just kind of sinks in? I know that after a while I felt Tony Mastropaolo was really in the restaurant and Mike Heffley was the actual RGM walking around trouble-shooting strip appearance :). Needless to say this team is doing an awesome job practicing Customer Mania everyday. I could really tell this was not just a show. Everyone was truly concerned on how their store looked to their customers. CSTMs were getting upset when they saw the slightest smudge on the window. Oh and by the way, I did perform a CER while I was there. They scored an awesome 94% which was a huge improvement over their prior visits. This team has caught on to the benefits of everyday "Customer Mania" and are really making it work for them. So a STANDING Champs Cheer for Eddie, Mike, and the entire team in Mobile. Thanks for everything you do!!! I enclosed a picture of this great team! Chris Capps, Champs & Recogniton Specialist, Alabama/Georgia/Florida (Continued in next column) TAKE THAT, SMARTY JONES! Just wanted you all to know that Bristol #3 MGR. Allen Fleenor has just received a Triple Crown Award and I would like to congratulate Allen and his team. Congratulations to Regina and team in Salem, Illinois for receiving a Triple Crown! Great job!!! Terry Jennings, Area Manager Regional Manager Roy Kuester enjoys his new company car on his way to work, but has downsized due to gas prices. Springhill (Continued from 1st column) Way to go Springhill Ave.! You guys are doing some Great things!!! Keep up the great focus. Joe Mitchell, Champs and Recognition Specialist, Tampa & S. TITANIC IS STILL BIG April 12,1912, Titanic sets sail for London England as the White Star line fought the Red Star line. The Titanic was the biggest ship known to man. Titanic set forth on its journey on April 12, 1912. The course for the Titanic was Queenstown, Ireland then to New York City. Almost identical to its stately older sister ship, the R.M.S Olympic, each steamstack was painted gold and black. On April 15,1912 was the sad night the Titanic sank. There were 20 boats floating nearby. 1500 people died with some boats only being half full. That dreadful night was a night to remember. John R. Neal II G nya TyArie Hudson was born March 24, 2004. The gentleman at the register, the manager I believe, really makes an effort to make you feel like you are in a restaurant and not just in a fast food place. He even remembers my name now, which, while not necessary to keep my business, is such a positive thing that I felt someone needed to know. Keep it up, and I will keep coming. MICHELLE LOVES MANCHESTER AND VICE VERSA My name is Michelle Varden, I am the crew leader at Manchester, TN. I was recently out of work for two months due to illness. I just came back May 4. JRN CONNECTION June 2004 Vol. 7, No. 6 6 Emmet (Continued from previous column) & I don't know that I could swab a floor any better than her. While cleaning, not using me as a reason to stop, she was very friendly and talked to me. She is worth her weight in gold to KFC. Jessica brought the potatoes to our table and seemed to go out of her way to ask if we were sure there was nothing else she could do for us. We told Mgr. Paul he was great too! Thank-you. Another, carry-out, customer at Emmet St. says that the service during the day is always great, especially from Wendy and Karen. HERE S TO EMMET ST. Jessica, Gerri & Paul KFC 1705 North Emmet Street Charlottesville, VA 22901 Hey Guys, Just wanted to say "Thanks" for all of your help and support! You're doing a wonderful job for us in Charlottesville! I don't always have the opportunity to let folks know that I can see all the hard work it takes to make a KFC a success. However, our customers get to see us in action every day, both good and bad! Recently a customer wrote the KFC Customer Hotline and had many wonderful things to say about all of you folks.* How you took a bad day and turned it into something better than expected! This is what I call genuine Hospitality and looking for ways to say "YES" to our customers. Thanks again for all the hard work and support in Charlottesville, looking forward to a great summer! Jack Hager, Regional Manager *This is that message: Been to KFC before, I know how your food tastes. I'm impressed with Gerri, was really cleaning your lobby not just wasting time, & very nice, Good worker, Great Service. Made my night. Had to tell you. I'm 47 y/o w/2 teens. We were at the school play late Sat. missing supper. Being hungry & try not to eat junk. Wanting what my kids call real food, we opted to go the 19 miles to Charlottesville (VA). Went to Long John Silvers. Received the most horrible service of any restaurant in my entire life. Left without eating. Never going back. Very tired, hungry, everyone ticked off; we went to KFC (Emmett St.). In line, the man in front of us wanted potatoes wedges & the girl said they were out, just as I was thinking, Oh great, another wonderful dining experience. She smiled at him and said, But we can have some more ready ASAP sir. She was so very nice. She smiled, took our order fast and even got it right after I changed it a couple of times. I sat down and my husband & kids completed our order. While waiting for them I noticed Gerri cleaning the lobby. Since my husband & myself are retired Navy Medical we know a bit about cleaning. What I saw was a person really cleaning the entire window not just going through the motions (Continued in next column) KFC CONQUERS COMMUNISM In previous Connections we have had pictures and articles about KFCs in other countries. Something not widely known is that in January of this year the 1,000 th KFC in China opened for business. All 1,000 RGMs in China gathered at the Great Wall for a Yum Cheer! I m not sure this is what David Novak and others mean by the Yum Dynasty, but it has to be coming close. Asia presents interesting challenges to KFC. Local tastes tend more toward rice than potatoes and many of the restaurants have menus unusual by American tastes, but chicken remains the standard. Another challenge is the competition, which in some cases tries to capitalize on KFC s success. For example, the logo for Yongzhe fast food, looks like a cross between Colonel Sanders and Chairman Mao. Currently KFC is the most recognized brand all across the world.

JRN CONNECTION June 2004 Vol. 7, No. 6 7 JANE GREEN S PARTY PAGE Aquia has a birth! Tiffany and James Corbin are the proud parents of a new baby boy born on the due date, May 23, 2004 at 10:40 a.m. 7lbs 8 oz 20 inches long. He has been named after the father. Jane Green is the proud Godmother. This is our next generation of Corbins who some day I hope will work at KFC. Jane Green, Area Manager A Safety party was held at Aquia to celebrate having no accidents in 2003. At a party for seniors at Massaponax and Aquia: L to R standing, Raynell Stukes, Renard Butler and Jason Brooks, kneeling, Neal[Maurice O Neal (That s right, Neal is kneeling, want to make something of it?)]. Tiffany Corbin, CSW at the Aquia KFC, designed the Dancing Colonel Safety pin. She is married and is on maternity leave. Her son is pictured above with Jane Green Senior Party Prizes

JRN CONNECTION June 2004 Vol. 7, No. 1 8 FLIPPING OVER LI L FRANKLIN To whom it concerns: I used to come in here and get really crappy service-never any chicken ready. Now-I come in and chicken is always ready, always fresh. The staff is very friendly and always helpful. Thelma has waited on me several times and I would say she is one of the nicest people in this building. Hats off to your crew! Great Job! This letter was from a customer of the Columbia Ave, Franklin, TN store. Area Manager Mike Zumbahlen shows how it s done at Atoka, TN. KEEPING IT CLEAN An article by Editor Rusty Carter in the April 17, 2004 Virginia Gazette of Williamsburg VA gave the lowdown on health inspections, why some restaurants are cleaner than others. The KFC on Richmond Rd. in Williamsburg, VA was mentioned and RGM Gloria Radford was quoted in the article. Gloria agreed with the suggestion that to-do lists make the job of maintaining a clean restaurant easier. We do a daily and weekly cleaning list, Gloria said. We focus on something different every day. If you eat in this KFC, you know it s clean. Gloria extends her cleanliness concerns to the parking lot as well. You have to be ready, not only for the health inspectors, but for the customers. You want to make it clean for them, she said. Thanks to Rusty Carter, Editor of the Virginia Gazette for permission to use this information. LORDY, LORDY, LOOK WHO S 40! And this wasn t even his birthday party. Acting as class clown is Mike Lake who turns 40 June 29 th. This was taken at Girl Scout Troop 2005 s end of year party. Mike volunteers his time to the girls. He is an Assistant Leader of the troop. Yes, Mike is a true Girl Scout! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BUDDY! Love Always Donna, Ashley & Michaela CUSTOMER COMMENDATIONS (Continued) Employees at the Old Fort Parkway Murfreesboro, TN KFC are great, says a dine-in customer. She says that Tawanda displays exceptional service. Latoya is very nice and provides excellent service at the same store, according to another dine-in customer who adds that all the employees are friendly. Kristen at the Blacksburg, VA store provides great service says a drive-thru customer. Anthony is very friendly and polite says a dine-in customer of the Memorial Blvd. Murfreesboro, TN restaurant. Olney, IL KFC is great and the crew is very friendly says a dine-in customer who loves the buffet. A dine-in customer of the Mt. Sterling, KY store says that the buffet is always stocked. At the Lake City, TN restaurant a dine-in customer compliments all the employees and the manager for excellent service. And at the Lafayette Ave. Terre Haute, IN KFC the whole crew are great and the food is good. She had a very nice meal, says a customer at the Salem, VA store. She ordered the buffet and says the staff was helpful, especially Devin. And the unit was very clean.
