Middlesbrough Fairtrade Directory

Middlesbrough a Fairtrade Town Middlesbrough achieved the accolade of becoming a Fairtrade town back in 2007 and has continued to campaign and grow support for the Fairtrade movement. Fairtrade in Middlesbrough is managed by the Fairtrade Group, which is working hard to make Fairtrade products more accessible. Since 2009, we have seen an ever expanding range of products and outlets throughout Middlesbrough, with now over 60 places where Fairtrade products can be purchased and enjoyed. There are many benefits from Fairtrade. Not only does the campaign promote social justice for producers in developing countries, it also demonstrates Middlesbrough s commitment to global issues and helps improve consumer choice. We hope you find this directory useful in supporting Fairtrade in Middlesbrough. What is Fairtrade? The Fairtrade Mark is a guarantee that the produce you are buying has been fairly traded. The price paid to the producer covers the full costs of production and living expenses as well as including a social premium that supports education and health projects in producers communities. It is not charity or aid it is a fair and sustainable way of doing business. Why should you support Fairtrade? Fairtrade is about social justice and ensuring that developing countries grow in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable way. Fairtrade products are good buying Fairtrade food and drink usually means buying higher quality. Small producers take more care over their products than larger farms and, as a rule, use fewer pesticides. Fairtrade is good for business consumers want it. By stocking or serving these products, businesses are giving consumers what they want there are now over 3000 certified products carrying the Fairtrade Mark. Where can I find Fairtrade products locally? All sorts of amazing products from around the world carry the Fairtrade Mark from fruit and flowers to cotton, gold and wine. Please find in this directory a list of retailers as well as restaurants and cafes in Middlesbrough where you can purchase Fairtrade items.

How can you get involved Everyone can help support Middlesbrough s Fairtrade campaign and make a real difference to the lives of people in developing countries. Here are some top tips: Buy Fairtrade products as part of your shopping. If a shop doesn t stock the Fairtrade product you want, please ask them. Shops may be unaware of the demand for these items. Get your favourite cafe or your workplace to switch to Fairtrade refreshments. Tell your family, friends and neighbours about Fairtrade. When buying clothes, look for something made from Fairtrade Certified Cotton. Choose a fairly traded craft item for the next gift you buy, for example at Christmas, when there is a Fairtrade shop in Middlesbrough. Contact Jenny Medhurst on 01740 630475 or email medhurst@phonecoop.coop to find out the location of this year's Christmas shop. Get involved in the Middlesbrough campaign.
