DOURO The beautiful Douro Valley region, a World Heritage site, is the backdrop for one of the fundamental Américo Amorim business sectors related with nature: wine production and wine tourism. We have two important estates in this region: the Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo estate and the Quinta de S. Cibrão estate, totalling more than 300 hectares. Forestry 3
Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo An 18 th century estate The Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo estate has an approximate area of 120 hectares, extending along the River Douro, on one of its most emblematic stretches. This is one of the oldest estates in the region, dating from Pombaline times, as can be seen from the 1768 Pombaline milestone and the 18th century chapel, which grace the property. 4 Forestry The magnificent vineyards of the Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo estate possess excellent solar orientation and are classified as letter A, accompanying the twists and turns of the River Douro over a distance of 1.5 Km.
Vineyards and wine A love of the land, respect for nature and local winegrowing traditions, allied with modern management and technological renovation, are characteristic features of our work on this estate, contributing to the preservation of the great Douro winegrowing spirit.
The result of this investment has been deeply rewarding, seen in the creation of some of the best Port and Douro wines from this Demarcated Region.
Wine tourism An international award-winning project Contemplation and emotion Pioneers in the development of wine tourism in Portugal and in the Douro region, Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo is an emblematic example and has won several national and international awards. This project, where wine and winegrowing are primordial and inspirational factors, offers visitors Wine Tours and Tasting as well as a wide range of other innovative recreational activities, such as: walking trails, wine caching, the Olive Oil Trail and Nordic Walking.

Wine House An area dedicated to the world of wine The Wine Tourism project includes the Wine House, an area dedicated to wine. This space is located at the emblematic Ferro do Pinhão railway station, which is highly valued and renowned for its magnificent collection of tiles on its main building, dating from 1937. The Wine House project occupies about 460 m 2 and comprises a wine store, terrace, museum and a room for events.

ALENTEJO The Alentejo is the most extensive and flattest region of Portugal. It is here in this heavenly region that Amorim concentrates its other forest activity centre, namely cork production, cattle raising and hunting tourism. Forestry 23
The business activity undertaken on these estates favours biodiversity. The cork oak forests are the habitat for 135 plant species and 160 bird species. The Amorim Group s forestry activities are an example of sustainable development and concern for climate change. The Group was one of the first members of BCSD, in Portugal. Cork and Holm Oak Cork and holm oak cultivation is one of the activities carried out on our estates in the Alentejo. Our annual cork production capacity is around 525 tonnes. This cork is sent to our factories for transformation. We reserve 3500 hectares for holm oak, in order to use the acorn, an excellent food source for black pig, one of the region s sources of wealth. These activities have shown themselves to be fundamental for the preservation of dozens of species of animals and plants which would otherwise be in danger of extinction. Forestry 25
Cork production The main activity on our Alentejan estates Removing cork from the cork oak does not damage the tree. It is done every 9 years and only from when the tree is 25-30 years old, thus guaranteeing the sustainability of the forest. Cork production, which is the main activity on our estates, with all its peculiar, traditional processes, is a magnificent example of creating wealth in an environmentally sustainable framework. We maintain constant investment in the maintenance and renewal of the cork oak forests to achieve that goal and to improve estate yields. Forestry 27
produto genuíno Natureza Pine nuts from the Herdade Vale das Mulheres estate are tender, fresh and aromatic, the result of careful production following traditional values. Miolo de Pinhão HERDADE VALE DAS MULHERES Maritime pine and stone pine We have contributed to the development of the national forest heritage by setting aside 200 hectares of our estates for maritime pine and stone pine cultivation, taking care of the planning and efficiency of the plantation and rejuvenating it by planting new trees. The production of pine cones for pine nuts is another of our activities, producing over 20 tonnes of pine nuts annually. The other aspect is the production of wood for industry. Forestry 29

HONEY Peral is an extensive area of varied flora, giving this product a singular flavour. CURED SHEEP CHEESE This cheese is made from raw sheep s milk. Farming and livestock WHEAT, RYE AND BARLEY In addition to cork oak cultivation and cork production, we have set aside part of our land, around 1500 hectares, for dry farming, in particular of lucerne, sorghum, oats and mixtures of pulses and grasses. CATTLE We allocate around 130 hectares for the production of feed for more than 750 head of cattle. This is one of the supplementary activities undertaken on our estates in Alentejo. Forestry 33
Olive growing with the wisdom of the Douro and the Alentejo Olive growing is also one of the cornerstones of our nature-related activities, and we allocate various hectares in the properties we own in Alentejo and Douro to this activity. In Douro, we focus in particular on the emblematic Quinta Nova de Nossa Senhora do Carmo estate and the Quinta de S. Cibrão estate, which already have a long tradition of top-quality olive oil production. 34 Forestry
Scenery, Hunting and Tourism on the vast Herdade do Peral estate Herdade do Peral is the largest and most emblematic property. At 5,500 hectares it is one of the largest estates in the Alentejo and the country s largest game hunting park. The estate hosts hunting and tourism activities, in harmony and in conjunction with forestry production, and agricultural and livestock farming. Hunting HERDADE DO PERAL IS THE LARGEST GAME HUNTING PARK IN THE COUNTRY, MAKING IT THE SITE PAR EXCELLENCE FOR LOVERS OF HUNTING. It has a wide variety of species, such as red deer, fallow deer, rabbit, hare, boar, woodcock and partridge, among others. It also provides visitors to the region with an excellent country hotel.
Herdade do Peral Estate Tourism The unrivalled beauty of the estates is an additional asset and is a source of enormous potential for the hotel and tourism activity, which we develop alongside our hunting business. The Herdade do Peral estate benefits from its proximity to Évora, the capital of the Alentejo and a World Heritage site, with a valuable monumental and artistic heritage that is well worth visiting.

Country Hotel Monte da Figueira The Monte da Figueira Country Hotel is located on the Peral estate, taking advantage of the magnificent countryside and providing views over the lake and cultivated fields. The hotel with its well-preserved traditional architecture is of important heritage value. The single storey buildings, with whitewashed walls decorated in ochre and galleries with low, thick arches, have an organisational layout. The pillared porches and walled patios are also typical features of the region s architecture. ECOTOURISM There are countless possibilities for lovers of ecotourism. There are paths for walking or horse riding to enjoy the beauty of the countryside, or for longer hikes or canoeing. Forestry 43
