Platina Bigger pears, year after year

Composition Foliar fertilizer (nitrogen N) based on tryptophan, a plant specific amino acid Different from other amino acid fertilizers Single amino acid (no chain) Very small molecule CH 2 CH COOH NH 2 Very fast uptake Only tryptophan (50 g/l) N H

Different formulations! Platina 50 : standard 50 g/l Platina 33 : Netherlands 33 g/l Platina 75 : Spain 75 g/l Doses in this document Platina 50! Conversion factors 1,0 l/ha Platina 50 = 1,5 l/ha Platina 33 1,0 l/ha Platina 50 = 0,67 l/ha Platina 75

Increasing the fruit size of pears 09/06/2015 4

Background fruit size Young fruits are provided with water and nutrients through transport channels (xylem) Fruit growth 3 weeks after full bloom

Mode of action Platina Platina increases the elasticity of the cells Due to the rapid growth of the fruits the xylem vessels tear Platina keeps them intact longer Better water uptake Better nutrient uptake More cell division

Use of Platina on pear 1 x 1,5 l/ha, ± 3 weeks after full bloom Weather conditions favorable for growth Day temperature > 15 C, preferably > 18 C High relative humidity Night temperature > 8 C Do not mix with other PGR (but Globaryll)

What to expect? Trials in Belgium on Conference 2004-2006 Year 2004 2005 2005 2006 2006 2006 2006 Experimental station Increase in fruit weight (g) PPS PPS PPS PPS PPS MVG MVG + 4 + 9 + 9 + 4 + 8 + 5 + 7 MVG = Ministry of the Flemish community PPS = pcfruit - Proeftuin Pit- en Steenfruit

What to expect? Platina = bigger pears without yield reduction 6 grams of difference in fruit weight equals about 1 mm of fruit size => 20 % within one size class up to a higher (= more expensive) size class eg. from 55-60 up to 60-65 mm Platina effect often only visible just before harvest

Combination with Globaryll 100

Platina + Globaryll 100 Platina can be combined perfectly with a fruit thinning treatment with Globaryll 100 Globaryll 100 on its own gives fruit thinning and a better fruit size Adding Platina gives a stronger thinning effect and/or an extra size effect Advice: - Tankmix - 10-12 mm, + 18 C

Platina + Globaryll 100 Belgium 2012 Variety: Conference Platina 1,5 l/ha, Globaryll 100 2,0 l/ha, ± 3 weeks after full bloom 200 180 160 140 120 100 80 60 40 20 0 Globaryll Globaryll + Platina 159 164 160 135 119 99 85 72 62 Number of clusters Number of fruits Fruits/100 clusters

Platina + Globaryll 100 Belgium 2012 Variety: Conference Platina 1,5 l/ha, Globaryll 100 2,0 l/ha, ± 3 weeks after full bloom 250 200 Globaryll Globaryll + Platina 150 100 195 205 219 50 59 68 74 0 Fruit weight (g) % > 65 mm

Recommendation No thinning Better fruit size Thinning so better fruit size Thinning + extra effect on fruit size Platina 1,5 L/ha ± 3 weeks after full bloom Globaryll 100 2 L/ha 10-12 mm + 18 C Globaryll 100 2 L/ha + Platina 1,5 L/ha 10-12 mm + 18 C

Key points - pear Platina 1 x 1,5 l/ha, ± 3 weeks after full bloom Temperature > 15 C, favorable weather Don t mix with copper Don t mix with other PGR (but Globaryll) Because Platina is taken up very rapidly, it only needs about 3 hours of dry weather after application!
