SWBAT explain how feudalism created stability and order in medieval Europe.

The Rise of Feudalism in Europe The Roman Empire once had a very strong emperor who commanded a powerful army. Barbarian kings conquered the Roman Empire, but these kings were weak and did not have a powerful army. Vikings,, Magyars and Muslims invaded Europe. A king named Charlemagn e created a system called feudalism in order to provide protection for his kingdom.

Feudalism Feudalism a political, economic, and social system in which land is exchanged for. protection

Europe s Feudal System king noble knight peasants (some known as serfs)

Medieval Europe s Feudal System 1. The king controls all of the land in his kingdom.

2. The king divides his land and gives pieces of land to nobles.

3. The nobles then divide their land and give these pieces of land to knights who protect the land.

4. Peasants are allowed to live on the land and build farms. Some peasants, called serfs, are not permitted to leave.

5. Knights eat some of the food and sell the rest to pay for equipment such as armor, swords, and horses.

In summary: peasants work, knights protect, nobles collect tax, king gets rich! 6. Nobles collect a tax (food) from peasants. The nobles sell surplus food and then give the profits to the king.

Our Kingdom is Under Attack! The Vikings have attacked our kingdom!

Your Task Today, your team will create a paper castle. You will label each part of the castle.

You must build the castle faster than the Vikings can destroy your castle with a catapult! Your Challenge

Will you be ready when I besiege your castle?

You need to build drum towers inside here, you will hide archers who will be ready to fire arrows at me! Drum tower

You will need to create arrowslits in each of your drum towers archers will fire arrows through these holes. Arrowslit

Arrowslit

Curtain Wall with Battlements You will need to build curtain walls. At the top of each wall, you need to construct tooth shapes called battlements. Your soldiers can stand on the wall, look down, and still be protected.

Curtain Wall with Battlements

In order to attack the castle, I will cross the moat. I won t tunnel under it because the tunnel would flood! Moat

Drawbridge Hopefully, you will leave your drawbridge open so that I can cross the moat and enter the castle!

The first building I will enter is the gatehouse. Gatehouse

Portcullis Hopefully, you leave the portcullis up so that I can enter the gatehouse!

Once inside the gatehouse, I will be sure to look up! I will need to watch out for the holes in the ceiling from which you drop harmful substances down on me! These substances might include rocks, arrows, scalding water, hot sand, quicklime, tar, or boiling oil! Murder Holes

Bailey As I exit the gatehouse, I ll step into the bailey. This is much like Valor s courtyard between the 5 th and 6 th grade classes. Here s where the siege turns into a battle

Keep Finally, the most important part of the castle! You need to build a keep. This is where the castle residents would go if enemies broke through the castle walls.

Your Task Today, your team will create a paper castle. You will label each part of the castle. Be creative. Add a moat and a drawbridge!

You must build the castle faster than the Vikings can build a catapult to attack your castle! Your Challenge

Homework On a separate sheet of paper, you will create your own 2-D castle. You must label all of the parts! It must be creative and colorful. Make sure that NO ONE can break into this castle!
