The Story of Quaker Steak & Lube In 1974, while gas stations were closing due to skyrocketing gas prices, two car-enthusiast business partners purchased an abandoned gas station in Sharon, PA installed a gas grill, and opened a cook-your-own-steak restaurant concept, appropriately named Quaker Steak & Lube. A trip to Buffalo, NY sparked an idea in the partners minds to create sauces for chicken wings. They began putting a free chicken wing on every guest's plate, which exploded into an unprecedented demand for chicken wings in the area. This success took the cook-your-own concept to a full-service restaurant selling iconic steak selections and wings by the bucket. Opened in the midst of the high-powered, rubber-burning, muscle car era, the founders paid homage to this by leaving a 1936 Chevrolet on the original hydraulic grease rack in the service station-converted restaurant. Now, more than 40 years later, cars and motorcycles still hang from the ceilings and walls, The Lube has received accolades for Best Wings in the USA, hundreds of awards for its sauce recipes, and serves more than 25 million wings annually.
