It is a state of strong contrasts with the modern, industrialized city of Bangalore at one extreme and the expanses of rural farming areas at the other. Karnataka also boasts some of the most interesting historic architecture in India and a varied and tumultuous history covering a total area of 191,791 Sq.km and having a population of 52,733,958(Census 2005-06). There are 27 districts in the state The total coastal stretch is 295 km. There are seven river systems in Karnataka,which with their tributaries, drain the state. The IT industry's composition in Bangalore is shown in the diagram below indicates that a large percentage of the companies are involved in high technology software development. Bangalore Helix is a biotech cluster being planned by the Karnataka government. Bangalore Helix would support biotech units with common infrastructure. It would comprise eight biotech incubators, covering a total area of 10,000 square feet. The other important activities include steel industries, mining in Bellary & Bhadravati, Nuclear Power plant at Kaiga, cement clusters in and around Gulbarga Dist, Coffee curing in Chikmagalur & Madikere etc. The pollution control status in 17 category industries is depicted below:

The total solid waste generated in the city of Bangalore alone everyday is estimated as 2200 MT/day, out of which 0.5% is Bio-medical waste. The first coming up TSDF site in Karnataka ( Dabbespet, Nelamangala Tq, Bangalore Dist ) is 40 Km away from Bangalore and is adjacent to Dabbespet Industrial Area. Total land is 93.18 Acres. The MOU between Government of Karnataka and private operator with Karnataka Industrial Area Development Board has been signed in December,2006.
