PRICKLY PEAR SIMMENTAL RANCH INVITES YOU TO OUR ANNUAL SIMMENTAL SIMANGUS TM SALE 10 Selling 80 Bulls 64 FEBRUARY 3, 2018 1:00 PM HELENA, MONTANA

Dear Cattlemen, As I look back at 2017 it was one of the most trying years since I came to Prickly Pear twelve years ago. On a sad note we lost Don to a fall on July 16th. He was always looking and trying to build the best genetics for his customers. His positive, never give up attitude, sense of humor and love of Simmental cattle will be his legacy here on the ranch. The year started off with the most snow we ve had in the valley in twenty years. From there the calves had to endure a summer filled with heat and smoke. The grass never did cure right... going from green to crispy in a week. I am very pleased on how well the calves gained even under those extreme conditions. I stuck to the way we feel is the only way to grow our bull calves with mother's milk and just the best grass I can find. No Creeping!!!!! As you look over the bulls you will notice a fair number of new sires. I sampled several sires from the Hook s program. Hooks Black Hawk calves are smaller at birth and have explosive growth to weaning, continuing a very nice gain to yearling. The Hook s Beacon bull we found is a dream heifer bull, they have good growth and are deep bodied calves. Hook s Baltic sired some of my heaviest muscled calves with lots of power. Our herd sire Montana Journey showed me he was the power bull I had bought him for. His calves will wean around the 800 pound mark and still have tons of eye appeal. On the Angus side I tried to bring in some new blood lines also. We used Connealy Black Granite to add length and rib shape. Connealy Comrade calves are thick topped moderate framed cattle with great dispositions. Mohnen Long Distance was used on heifers. They come small and grow above average for a heifer bull. They should add depth of body and calving ease. A few highlights are the embryos out of three of our donor cows. The first is the great 811U donor. She is an ER Black Cisco that has produced many top bulls and heifers. No matter who you breed her to they're in the top of the herd. The second is T286. She is a Snake Eyes daughter who sired the bull PPSR Heavy Duty. You will see 5 of his bulls in the sale. The third is a RDDS Future prototype daughter whose calves add length and eye appeal. Our donors have to have at least four blockbuster natural calves before we ever consider flushing them. Here s hoping 2018 will bring a nice mild weather year. Sincerely, Troy Wheeler HOPE TO SEE YOU ALL AT THE SALE. pricklypearsimmental.com

NEW CUSTOMERS For those of you that are new customers I just want to go over a few goals we strive for: #1 is disposition. I see a lot of people now are putting disposition codes in their catalogs. We take great pride in the disposition of our cattle, so you can assume they re all very docile unless noted by us. #2 is retaining the growth while improving everything else we all want - calving ease, smaller birth weights, moderate frame size, good udders, feet, etc. Growth is one of Simmentals best assets. Some people are concentrating on birth weights so hard they are losing the growth advantage. #3 We concentrate more on calving ease and maternal calving ease than birth weights. All the bulls in the sale were unassisted at birth. #4 We also look at individual performance more than growth. The will change if the animal has the performance, but the animal won t always perform just because he s got good. For those of you that have never actually weighed a calf I urge you to do so a few times. I think you ll be surprised. Every time we have visitors I make them guess and they are usually about 15 pounds light! SIGHT UNSEEN PURCHASES We guarantee all sight unseen purchases. Call ahead of time and we will go over the offering. You can leave a bid with us or a representative, or you may bid via the phone or on the internet during the sale. RETAINED SEMEN INTEREST The bull buyer will receive full possession, 100% salvage value, and 2/3 semen interest of any bull purchased in this sale (unless otherwise noted). This means we are retaining a 1/3 semen interest in these bulls. This semen interest is a royalty interest that entitles Prickly Pear Simmental Ranch to 1/3 of the revenues of any semen sold. PPSR semen interest remains even if the bull or any interest in the bull is sold to a third party. It is the buyer s responsibility to ensure that PPSR s interest is upheld if semen is ever sold. The buyer must also inform any third party of PPSR s interest if the bull is ever sold. PPSR will not be responsible for expense related to semen collection or promotion of any bull purchased, unless a mutual agreement is reached prior to semen collection or promotion. Our retained semen interest also includes the right to collect semen on the bull at our expense and the buyer s convenience. ACTUAL SCROTAL MEASUREMENTS We do not believe in adjusted yearling scrotal measurements, therefore, all scrotal measurements are actual figures. Actual measurements will be taken on January 28, 2018---. All bulls under 30 centimeters will be sifted regardless of age. The bull s testicular size is an early indicator of puberty, which is passed on to their sons and daughters. Bulls with larger testicles service more cows and produce more semen, plus their daughter s cycle at an earlier age and have a higher conception rate. All bulls are measured, palpated and fertility tested by Hoffman AI Breeders prior to sale. The scrotal measurements will be on a supplement sheet along with the carcass data. Most testicular growth occurs from nine to twelve month of age. Remember to consider the age of the calf on January 28 when using these measurements. Beef Improvement Federation Recommendation for Scrotal circumference Months of Age 12-14 15-20 21-30 30+ Excellent 35 37 39 40 Good 30-35 31-37 32-39 33-40 Poor 30 31 32 33 3

SUGGESTED MANAGEMENT GUIDELINES FOR YEARLING BULLS We are believers in the use of yearling bulls and feel it is one of the best years of their lives. It s a time when the bulls are easy to manage and their only concern is breeding cows. We have found that yearling bulls that are managed carefully during the second year of their lives not only do well, but they will also perform better over time. Below are some suggested guidelines for the care of yearling bulls: 1. Upon delivery to your ranch, keep yearling bulls separate from older bulls. Feed the yearling bulls a maintenance ration of 5-8 lbs. per head of grain and free choice hay. Reduce grain feed gradually so they are on straight hay or grass 2-4 weeks prior to breeding season. 2. When possible, try to limit the bulls to 45-60 days of pasture service the first year. At this time, or as soon as possible, remove the bulls to put them in separate pastures with plenty of good, quality grass. 3. It is best to feed yearling bulls separate from older bulls until after their second breeding season. This allowes them to achieve the growth and strength necessary to compete with older bulls for feed and space. You will see the benefits of a litttle added cost and care of feeding a yearling bull by probably two or three more years of service from a well managed and healthy bull. QUICK GUIDE TO ASA AND $ INDEXES Expected Progeny Differences (): are the most accurate and effective tool available for comparing genetic levels. In using, the difference between two sires represents the unit difference expected in the performance of their progeny. For example, if sires A and B have of +10 and 5, a 15-unit difference would be expected in their progeny (moving from -5 to +10 yields 15 units). Key to using is knowing what units they are expressed in. For example, if the above case referred to weaning weight, A would be expected to sire 15-pounds more weaning weight than B. If calving ease were the trait, A would be expected to sire 15-percent more unassisted births in first-calf heifers; in other words, if B sired 30 assists in a group of 100 heifers, we d expect A to require 15 assists. A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull s rank him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about and $ indexes visit www.simmental.org. Listed below are the units ASA are expressed in: All-Purpose Index (API): Dollars per cow exposed under an all-purposesire scenario. (See below for more details.) Back Fat (BF): Inches of backfat. Birth Weight (BW): Pounds of birth weight. Calving Ease (CE): Percent of unassisted births when used on heifers. Carcass Weight (CW): Pounds of carcass weight. Maternal Calving Ease (MCE): Percent of unassisted births in first-calving daughters. Milk (MLK): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk. Marbling (MRB): Marbling score. Maternal Weaning Weight (MWW): Pounds of weaning weight due to milk and growth. Ribeye Area (REA): Square inches of ribeye. Warner-Bratzler Shear Force (WBSF): Pounds of force required to shear a steak. Stayability (STAY): Percent of daughters remaining in the cowherd at 6 years of age. Terminal Index (TI): Dollars per cow exposed under a terminal-sire scenario. (See below for more details.) Weaning Weight (WW): Pounds of weaning weight. Yearling Weight (YW): Pounds of yearling weight. Yield Grade (YG): Yield grade score. $ Indexes: Though allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a piece of the economic puzzle. That s where $ indexes come in. Through well-conceived, rigorous mathematical computation, $ indexes blend and economics to estimate an animal s overall impact on your bottom line. The same technology that led to the dramatic progress in swine, poultry and dairy genetics over the last several decades was used to develop the following $ indexes: All-Purpose Index (API): Evaluates sires for use on the entire cow herd (bred to both Angus first-calf heifers and mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained and the remaining heifers and steers put on feed and sold grade and yield. Terminal Index (TI): Evaluates sire for use on mature Angus cows with all offspring put on feed and sold grade and yield. Using API and TI: First, determine which index to use; if you re keeping replacements use API, if not, TI. Then, just as with, zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (As described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed.) The difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. Or, put another way, how much you can pay for one bull compared to another. For example, when buying an all-purpose-type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for API is worth an extra $6,000 over a+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 diff. x 30 hd. x 4 yr. = $6,000). A percentile-ranking chart is required to determine where a bull s index value ranks him relative to other bulls in the breed. For percentile rankings or more detailed information about and $ indexes. 4

Donald Lee Burnham, 83, of Helena, died on July 16th, 2017 at St. Patrick s Hospital in Missoula, five days after an accidental fall at his Helena valley home. Every member of his immediate family surrounded him in his passing. Don battled Parkinson Disease for over 30 years, always with a positive attitude, sense of humor, and the desire to keep going. Don was born at St. Patrick s Hospital in Missoula, Montana on January 4, 1934 to Harry and Marie (Plummer) Burnham. As a young boy, Don discovered his passion for agriculture. During the war, hard work and honest sweat became the building blocks of his character. He learned how to grow a victory garden with his grandparents. Don started his first independent agricultural business at the age of eleven. He negotiated with a neighbor to rent and farm a small plot of land where he raised and sold raspberries. Don went on to begin his career in animal husbandry by raising and selling rabbits. One of Don s favorite stories was how he and his cousin got the keen idea to dye some of the bunnies to help them sell better at Easter. Don graduated from Missoula County High School in 1952. He was a respected member of the track team and one of the top distance runners in the state. Participating in FFA and Vo-Ag created a solid foundation for Don s lifelong career in agriculture. Don s first trip out of Montana was to attend the FFA National Convention in Kansas City as the president of the Missoula Chapter. He took the money he earned from his FFA projects and started college with $150 in his pocket. Don Burnham An ardent MSU supporter and 60-year alum, Don attended Montana State College (University) in Bozeman and majored in animal science. In 2014, he was honored with the Outstanding Agricultural Leader Award from MSU College of Agriculture. To finance his education, Don washed dishes for 50 men as a member of the Sigma Nu fraternity and worked the night desk at the Baxter Hotel. His strong focus to achieve his goals and dedication to excellence paid off. In his junior year, he received the Danforth Fellowship for being the outstanding junior in the Department of Agriculture as well as a scholarship from Ralston Purina. He quit washing dishes and became a counselor in the new men s dorm. While attending college, Don met the love of his life Nancy Lichtwardt, of Helena. Following his graduation in 1956, Don went on to U.S. Naval Officer s Training School and served four years as a Navy Aviation Navigator. He was stationed in Hawaii and Guam, flying with the Seventh Fleet. Don took a short leave from duty to return home to Montana following Nancy s graduation from MSC. They were married at St. Peter s Episcopal Cathedral in Helena on April 12, 1958 and began their wonderful journey together in Guam. The couple shared a beautiful life filled with memorable times and hard work while making numerous friends along the way during their 59 years of marriage. Don and Nancy raised three sons, Kurt, Kent and Gary and a daughter Marla. Don especially enjoyed family camping trips between hay cuttings that included fishing and huckleberry picking. It was life s simple pleasures such as stopping for ice cream, coin collecting, playing cribbage and spending time with his grandchildren that really put a smile on his face. Don was an amazing father who loved deeply, guided gently, and never wavered in his support for all of his children s endeavors. Don and Nancy started Prickly Pear Ranch in 1962 with the first cows being purchased from the local packing plant for eleven cents per pound. In 1968, the Simmental breed caught Don s attention and by 1972 he imported the first purebred Simmental bull to Montana. The first black, polled Simmental bull in the world was born on the ranch in 1979. In ensuing years, he sold cattle into 40 states, Mexico, Canada and Kazakhstan. A renowned and highly respected cattleman, Don spent 13 years on the Montana Simmental Board of Directors and six years on the American Simmental Board. In 1999, Don was one of three ranchers to receive the World Simmental Golden Book Award, a very distinguished honor. He also received the Montana Simmental Association Pioneer Award in 2006. As a dedicated American Simmental Association charter member, Don attended World Simmental Federation meetings in the USA, Canada, Austria, Brazil, Ireland and Scotland/England. Don exclaimed, The best part of the Simmental breed is the lifetime friendships that develop. Always interested in issues relevant to his community, agriculture, the ranching industry, and his family, Don was active in several organizations and boards. He served as President of the Prickly Pear Water Users, Lewis & Clark County Farm Bureau and the 4-H Community Center. He was on the Helena Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors. Don was a member of the Montana Stock Growers, the National Cattlemen Beef Association, and, for 45 years, he was a representative for American Breeders Service. From 1988 to 2000, Don made ten trips to Africa as a consultant on animal health, nutrition, and genetic programs in Nigeria. Don was active, along with Nancy, in Lewis & Clark County 4-H for over twenty years as a parent, leader, judge, and volunteer. Visitors were always welcome at the ranch. It can be said that Don never met a stranger. He will always be remembered for his fabulous stories and funny jokes. Don was a very generous man who shared his experiences, knowledge and wisdom without hesitation. Don and Nancy opened gates and doors to guests from around the world including foreign exchange students, a Friendship Force gathering of 200 Japanese visitors and their host families, plus a wide range of travelers from 34 countries. Don always enjoyed getting out to meet people and explore. He was always up for traveling with Nancy, especially to their winter getaway in Texas, playing bridge with great friends, and spending time with family. The word retirement was not in Don s vocabulary -- he dedicated his life to being a steward of the land, a caretaker of the herd, and a man of integrity who could always be counted on as a helpful neighbor, a trustworthy friend, and a devoted family man. Don is survived by his wife Nancy, sons Kurt (Delores), Kent (Lynne), Gary (Loretta) and a daughter Marla Maharg (Sean). He was a proud grandfather to ten grandchildren: Hunter Joppa (Doug), Connor and Mason Burnham, Shawna Alexander (John), Shannon Currier (Rob), Jaden, Kyler, Treven, Dylan and Juliah Maharg, and also four great-grandchildren: Isabella, David, and Daniel Alexander and Rose Currier. He is also survived by his brother Neil Burnham of Toronto, Ontario, sister Joyce (LeRoi) Smith from Seeley Lake, MT, plus numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marie Wise, step-father Lloyd Wise, father Harry Burnham, step-mother Velma Burnham, and sister Nancy Blake.
