LYTHAM ST ANNES NEWSLETTER Registered Charity 1013058 January 2018 WE WISH ALL OUR MEMBERS A VERY HAPPY & HEALTHY NEW YEAR Welcome to the January Newsletter. I am always pleased to receive news, the deadline for the February Newsletter is 25 th January 2018. Our next general meeting is on 12 th January 2018. The speaker is David Joy and the title of his talk is Liverpool Cowkeepers. Madeline Tretton - Newsletter Editor U3A TALK BY BOB PICKERSGILL The life and songs of Frank Sinatra Bob used Franks daughter s biography to give us an insight in the life and times of Frank. An only child and small boy with a scarred face brought up by his Grandparents in New Jersey. Not a great start in life for a man who became the voice of his time. He started his career at 19 and b 1942, at the age of 27 he was earning $25,000 a week. Apart from entertaining us with anecdotes from Franks life and loves, Bob sang some of Franks hits and also played the saxophone. Having reached rock bottom after his marriage to Ava Gardener ended, he released the album Come fly with me and the next 3 years were the pinnacle of his career. He has remained a superstar, although no longer with us, his voice lives on.
SPANISH CHRISTMAS GET TOGETHER The members who have been involved with the Spanish Groups were invited to a get together. About 22 of us filled the venue Ben & Johnnies a small café/bar in St Anne s. We enjoyed tapas and sang some Carols in Spanish of course accompanied by Johnnie on his guitar. Then Johnnie entertained us with some more songs in English, and we finished the night off with dancing in the gaps between the tables. I think everyone had a good time I had the hangover to prove I did. Christine Holland Spanish - Intermediate Group Leader WINE APPRECIATION The 1 st wine appreciation groups wine tasting was held on 30 th November at Majestic Wines in Lytham. The group were very impressed with the selection, which was chosen by Majestic wines with the object of expanding our knowledge. What a revelation- a Sauvignon Blanc from Slovenia and a Cabernet Sauvignon from The Lebanon! Others from more familiar areas but equally as interesting, and with prices ranging from 8 to 23 and all for 10 a head. The next wine tasting will be toward the end of January.
If you are interested in joining the group contact Tony on 01253 711172. WHIST The initial get together of the newly formed whist group had a fun afternoon playing a very light hearted game of cards. We will be starting again on 9 th January, and then every 2 nd and 4 th Tuesday of the month at 2.00pm until 4.00pm.
