Sand and Sandy Loam Strip Trial Objective Evaluate different bean types using a strip trial format. Sand and Sandy loam soils present unique challenges for growers. Upright top yielding varieties from the plot trials were selected for each DRK, Pinto, White, Black, Adzuki, Cranberry Type. A top yielding soybean variety was used for comparison between types. A mung bean variety was also included due to it s ability to deal well with the lighter ground. Variety trials have a more controlled environment with minimal disease, weed and insect pressure in order to minimize distortions. These strip trials will test the new variety under more field-like conditions. The two trials were stacked back to back with the soils changing from a sandy loam to a coarse sand. Background Cooperator: Mike Donnelly-Vanderloo Planting Date: May 28/2009 County: Middlesex Seeding Rate: 6 seeds/ft. Soil Type: Huron and Perth Clay Loam Row Width: 30 inch Tillage: No-Till Herbicides: Pre- Dual&Roundup, Post- Assure,Reflex&BasagranRival Soil Test: N/A Harvest Date: Sept 17 / 2009 Fertilizer Rate: lbs actual 64.5-23-30 NPK Previous Crop: Corn Methods This trial was planted with a JD air seeder with a variety in each unit. Each strip was approx. 200 feet in length centered off the head lands. Four reps. of 4 metres were cut and bagged. These bagged plants were spread out to dry, combined and analysed. A yield was calculated based on these weights. Results Sandy Loam General Comments: * there was a lot of white mold pressure on all the varieties however there seemed to be a lot of plant damage to the Etnas at harvest. * the Mung Beans stand was non existent on the loam soils due planting too deep * the Etna could have been harvested earlier to reduce some split pods. Sand General Comments: * the Mung Beans were relatively flat compared to the other types. * there was a considerable amount of very late maturing Erimo plants that did not yield. 32

Cranberry Dry Bean Strip Trial Objective Evaluate the new cranberry type dry bean variety Crimson (BS 1003) in a strip trial format. Etna was used as the standard for comparison. In previous Preliminary Yield variety Trials Crimson has yielded consistently among the top varieties. Variety trials have a more controlled environment with minimal disease, weed and insect pressure in order to minimize distortions. These strip trials will test the new variety under more field like conditions. Background Cooperator: Brad Martin Planting Date: June 24 2009 County: Middlesex Seeding Rate: 69,000 seeds/ac. Four representative random samples were hand harvested, bagged and threshed with an Almaco 40 plot combine. Results Cool and wet conditions throughout the growing season provided excellent conditions for white mold. While the yields were excellent considering the year the seed quality suffered. The harvested seed was also appraised by a grader from Cooks and seemed to follow the Seed Quality rating in the chart below. Crimson had higher pick and lower seed quality however the seed quality was still acceptable. Martin Strip Trial Entry Name YIELD (cwt) 100 seed wt (g.) White Bean Dry Bean Strip Trial Objective Evaluate two new white dry bean varieties Medalist and Reliant in a strip trial format. Thunder was used as the standard for comparison. In previous Variety Trials these two new varieties have yielded consistently among the top varieties. Variety trials have a more controlled environment with minimal disease, weed and insect pressure in order to minimize distortions. These strip trials will test the new variety under more field-like conditions. Background Cooperator: Marwood Willis Planting Date: June 14/2009 County: Huron Seeding Rate: 172,500 plants/ac. Each strip was.55 acres in size centered off the head lands. The strips were harvested using a JD 6600 and placed in totes. These totes were taken and weighed at the local Kirkton Cooks. A yield was calculated based on these weights. Pick numbers determined by the graders is also included. Results Early in the growing season Thunder emerged the quickest with excellent early vigour. There were no obvious height differences by July. Cool and wet conditions throughout the growing season provided conditions excellent for white mold and anthracnose. The Thunder and Reliant seemed to be the hardest hit of the three varieties for White Mold. The final yield numbers (see table 1) show a large clear advantage for Thunder. PMR REPORT # SECTION J: CEREAL, FORAGE, AND OILSEED CROPS CROP: Edible beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), cv. OAC Rex, T9905, Red Hawk, Etna NAME AND AGENCY: GILLARD C L, DEPUYDT, D and WILLIS, S. Ridgetown College, University of Guelph, Ridgetown, Ontario, N0P 2C0 Tel: (519) 674-1632 Fax: (519) 674-1600 Email: cgillard@ridgetownc.uoguelph.ca TITLE: EVALUATION OF QUADRIS AND HEADLINE TO INCREASE YIELDS WHEN DISEASE PRESSURE IS NOT PRESENT WITH AND WITHOUT DEFOLIATION DAMAGE IN DRY EDIBLE BEANS AT THE HURON RESEARCH STATION 2009 MATERIALS: CRUISER MAXX BEANS 288 FS (thiamethoxam+ metalaxyl-m + fludioxonil, 22.61% + 1.7% + 1.12%); HEADLINE (pyraclostrobin 100g ai/ha); QUADRIS 250 SC (azoxystrobin 125g ai/ha). METHODS: The seed for the experiments was treated with Cruiser Max Beans, at label rates, for protection against early season seedling diseases and insects. The experiment was planted June 1, 2009 using a four row conemounted planter mounted on a John Deere Max Emerge planter. The seeding rate was 20 seeds per metre of row for the white bean varieties and 17 seeds for the large seeded kidney and cranberry beans. An experimental unit contained 4 rows 0.75 m apart, 6 m in length, arranged in an RCBD design with 4 replications. All of the assessments and yields were obtained from a harvest area 4 m long and 2 rows wide. The experiment was divided into two that being either hailed or left untreated. The simulated hail was performed at the crops 1 st flower, and was accomplished with and Echo weed trimmer with string attachment the Headline/Quadris treatment was then applied the next day. All the hailed treatments were defoliated about 50%. The spray treatments were applied once during the growing season, when a single flower was present on the majority of plants in that variety. The experiments were hailed on July 28 th & sprayed on July 29th (58 DAP) for the Red Hawk and Etna and August 4 th and 5 th (65 DAP) for the white bean varieties. The spray was applied using a CO 2 pressurized sprayer with a three 10002 Airbubble nozzles spaced at 50 cm, at 277 kpa (40 psi) in 200 L/ha water. The treatments were assessed for any disease and notes were made before harvest. The Etna experiments (non-hailed/hailed) were harvested on September 11 th and September 25 th. Red Hawks were harvested on September 15 th and the 25 th. The non-hailed T9905 were harvested on September 24 th with the remaining white bean experiments being harvested on October 8 th. Visual seed quality was determined using a scale of 1-5 (1 = excellent seed quality, 5 = poor seed quality). Seed weight was determined by recording the weight of 100 randomly selected seed from each plot. Pick percentage (discoloured and/or misshapen seed) were calculated for each plot. Yield and seed weights were adjusted to the standard storage moisture of 18%. RESULTS: See Tables 1-8. CONCLUSIONS: No significant differences were seen in yield with or without the use of Headline or Quadris in combination with defoliating of the canopy in these eight experiments (Table 1-8). 42

TITLE: EVALUATION OF MARSH SPOT IN DRY EDIBLE BEANS VARIETY TRIALS 2009 (THORNDALE, KIPPEN, MONKTON, ELORA AND ST. THOMAS) CROP: PEST: Edible beans (Phaseolus vulgaris L.), cv. as per treatment Marsh Spot NAME AND AGENCY: GILLARD C L, WILLIS, S. and DEPUYDT, D Ridgetown College, University of Guelph, Ridgetown, Ontario, N0P 2C0 Tel: (519) 674-1632 Fax: (519) 674-1600 Email: cgillard@ridgetownc.uoguelph.ca MATERIALS: CRUISER MAXX BEANS 288 FS (thiamethoxam+ metalaxyl-m + fludioxonil, 22.61% + 1.7% + 1.12%) METHODS: Cranberry beans are prone to a disorder known as marsh spot, which discolours the interior of the cotyledon and can create marketing issues. Seed samples were collected from the Ontario Dry Bean Performance Trials to determine if any of the cranberry varieties are susceptible to Marsh Spot. These varieties were compared to Messina, a highly susceptible variety of cranberry beans, which was also seeded at each location. Seed was treated with DCT and Cruiser 5FS at registered rates, for protection against early season seedling diseases and insects. Five locations were planted across southern Ontario; Thorndale, Kippen, Monkton, Elora and St. Thomas. The experiments were part of the Ontario dry bean variety registration and performance trials. The experiments were arranged as a RCBD design with 4 replications. Samples of seed harvested from these experiments were sent to the Huron Research Station, and scored for marsh spot incidence and severity. Fifty seeds were split and each half was rated for marsh spot incidence. The percentage incidence was then calculated for each variety. If Marsh Spot was present, its severity was visually rated on a scale of one to five, using the standards found in Figure 1. RESULTS: See Tables 1-5. CONCLUSIONS: Marsh spot scores for cranberry bean varieties at the five locations are presented in Tables 1-5. Marsh spot occurred at each location, with the St. Thomas location having the highest incidence x severity (I x S) scores with a four fold increase over the next highest. HR 203-4979 was the same (4 locations) and significantly worst than Messina at Thorndale. had an average incidence of 11.9%, which was significantly worst than any other variety in all the trials. The commercial varieties of Etna and Hooter had consistently low marsh spot incidence except at the St. Thomas location. 47
