A FINE GALLANTRY GROUP OF FOUR MEDALS AWARDED TO FLIGHT LIEUTENANT MICHAEL THOMAS GIBSON HENRY, RAF, comprising Distinguished Flying Cross (George VI), engraved 1940; 1939-1945 Star; Africa Star and British War Medal 1939-1945, all medal are in extremely fine condition, 3 campaign medals brooch mounted for display, DFC in issued leatherette box, medals are, as usual, unnamed - Flight-Lieutenant Henry was born in 1912, he lived in Heswall, Cheshire and was educated at Sedbergh School. He joined the RAF in 1937 - service number 39876. He gained his pilots wings in October 1937 having been granted permanent commission (on probation) on 29th July 1937. On 13 January 1941 a brand new aircraft was being given a fuel consumption test, it carried a mixed operationally experienced crew. They were to carry out the test at 12000ft at which they were to cruise for an hour in order to measure fuel consumption. The aircraft took off from Linton on Ouse at 11.20 and climbed away, about 30 minutes later it was seen near Dishforth at about 3000ft, the undercarriage was down and a vapour trail was coming from the port side engine which was not working. The vapour ignited after which the aircraft entered a steep dive before crashing. The group of medals is accompanied by a copied photograph of Henry and a brief biography including details of a flight to bomb the Dornier aircraft factory at Wismar in the Baltic. To date his descendants have been unable to locate his log book but these may well appear at a time in the future. R20000/30000 271.
