FPA AUSTRALIA What makes Envirochoice coffee cups different? Most paper coffee cups are paper coated with Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) derived from oil. LDPE is non-renewable and non-compostable, and mainly ends up in landfill. Envirochoice cups are coated with polylactic acid (PLA) made from corn resulting in a package made from fully renewable resources. It can be disposed of in a commercial composting waste stream, rather than a land-fill. The use of this corn-based plastic also requires less energy and generates less greenhouse gas in manufacturing; therefore, reduces your environmental footprint. What is PLA? PLA stands for polylactic acid and is a resin made from corn starch. PLA is used to make the lining that is used in Envirochoice coffee cups. PLA is biodegradable, and fully compostable. It uses 65 % less energy in production compared to oil-based plastics and generates 68 % fewer greenhouse gases and contains zero toxins. 12
