Add bee balm to flower beds or an herb garden for life and color. Try it in view of a window so you won t miss the acrobatics of hummingbirds that visit in summer. Bee balm also attracts butterflies and bees. In a sunny field or meadow, let plants spread and multiply to create a blanket of color. I N T H I S Bee balm flowers are magnets for hummingbirds, butterflies, and bees. For prolific blooms, plant in full sun. Picking the flowers encourages a second round of blooms.plant in rich, well-drained soil with a ph from 6.0 to 6.7. Amend the soil with compost or add a slow-release fertilizer to the soil before planting. Although it tolerates drought, your plant will do much better if it gets adequate moisture; however, protect it from poor drainage, especially in winter. Water when leaves wilt in dry weather. Mulch in the spring.in the late fall, cut plants back to within several inches of the ground. For a bushier shrub, pinch the tips of the stems when new growth appears each spring. 1362 Jefferson Hwy Fishersville, Virginia 22939 540-885-7342

Living with nature This bird made hawk-watching famous. Thousands of birders gather to watch the annual fall migration of broadwinged hawks. They start in September in New England, traveling down the Appalachian ridges on their way to their wintering grounds in South America. They occur in light and dark (rare) morphs, females are slightly larger than males, juveniles different from adults. Although the Broad-winged Hawk s numbers are relatively stable, populations are declining in some parts of its breeding range because of forest fragmentation. The subspecies of the Broad-winged Hawks that migrate will fly in flocks of more than forty up to hundreds of thousands of birds at heights anywhere from 1,800 ft to approximately 4,300 ft. Fall migration for the Broad-winged Hawk lasts for 70 days as birds migrate about 60 miles per day from North America, through Central America to South America without crossing salt water Broad-winged Hawks give special attention to preparing their food for consumption, skinning frogs and snakes and plucking prey birds feathers. Most small mammals on the other hand will be eaten whole. Broad-winged Hawks rarely drink water and are able to survive solely with the water present in their prey To attract and court females, the male Broad-winged Hawk will perform a courtship display flight including cartwheels, dives, and other aerial acrobatics. Birds meet in the air, hook their feet together and spiral down together.

Rosy maple moth Dryocampa rubicunda Family: Saturniidae Subfamily: Ceratocampinae Identification: Extremely variable in color. Upperside of wing is yellow to cream to white with pink at the margins and bases of the wings. The amount of pink can vary from covering most of the wing to being absent altogether. Wing Span: 1 5/16-2 1/16 inches (3.4-5.2 cm). Meet the Rosy Maple Moth, Dryocampa rubicunda. One of the more colorful moths, these normally fuzzy pink and yellow insects from the family Saturniidae are always a delight to see. Rosy Maple Moths live from Nova Scotia to parts of eastern Texas, and although not endangered, can be hard to find due to their shy nature. These moths can be seen flying from May to August. Egg incubation lasts about two weeks. Caterpillars feed off of various plants, from maples to oaks. They are very sociable, except until their final two instars, when they become isolated. Pupation is relatively quick. There can be up to three generations a year depending on where the moth is. An interesting fact about this moth is that they always seem to emerge in the late afternoon to early night, and mate in the late night. Rosy Maple Moths live in deciduous forests. They are also called Green-striped Mapleworms. Caterpillars can occasionally become pests. Adults do not eat.
