It has a creamy, opulent texture, but remains light on its feet. This sexy wine is showing exceptionally well and is best drunk over the next 10-15 years. Not one of the longestlived wines from Dominus, but it is certainly at a wonderful point in its evolution right now. Stag's Leap Wine Cellars Fay Cabernet Sauvignon 2010 The FAY vineyard is where the Stag s Leap Wine Cellars story began. Established by pioneering grape grower Nathan Fay in 1961, it was the first planting of Cabernet Sauvignon in what is now the Stags Leap District. Tasting Nathan Fay s homemade Cabernet in 1969 was a defining moment for the founder of Stag s Leap Wine Cellars. Here was land capable of producing a wine that could rival the best in the world. And, in 1986, the winery purchased Nathan Fay s vineyard and named it FAY in his honor. Barrel Aging: 19 months, 89% new French oak, 11% previously filled, French oak Robert Parker 93 points: The 2010 Cabernet Sauvignon Estate Fay stands out for its delineation and nuance. Sweet floral notes meld into plums, menthol black cherries, violets and tar. With time in the glass, the wine fleshes out beautifully. Today the tannins are firm, but once they soften the fruit should begin to emerge more fully. There is plenty of vibrancy and energy in the 2010, although the wine does shut down quickly in the glass. RP 93 points @ $780/btl HIDDEN GEM: Flying Horse Napa Petite Sirah 2007 Flying Horse Winery was established in a heart of Napa in 1920 by Smeding family. The family has a four generation history of working in agriculture in the Napa. The Napa locations offer a unique terrior of rocky, well-drained soils with hot days and temperate evenings that deliver superior wines in limited quantities such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Petite Sirah, Zinfandel, Petit Verdot and Malbec. Winemaker s notes: This Petite Sirah has a beautiful saturated crimson color. Its' deep blackberry and cherry character is mixed with pepper and spice notes. There is also a bit of licorice. Fine tannins give it structure and support throughout with a finish that begs for you to have more. Special @ $328/btl SPECIAL FEATURE PINOT NOIRS FROM OREGON: Saffron Fields Vineyard Eieio Pinot Noir 2012 Winemaker s notes: Elegantly powerful, this wine is a fantastic expression of the Saffron Fields Vineyard. Blackberry, black plum, and white pepper aromas segue into flavors of macerated cherries, dried bay leaf and chai spices. There is a distinct aroma of sweet cherry pipe tobacco, carried though onto the palate and the finish, almost reminiscent of a Dundee Hills Pinot. Robert Parker 91 points: The 2012 Pinot Noir Saffron Fields consists of five separate ferments from the five leased blocks of vine that were picked October 8-18 and matured in 25% new French oak. The nose offers more black rather than red fruit, tightly knit with tinge of dried blood. The palate is medium-bodied with supple fruit that now veer back toward red: raspberry and wild strawberry interlaced with white pepper and orange rind. There is decent substance here, silky smooth and commendably long. RP 91 points @ $420/btl
Saffron Fields Vineyard Yamhill Carlton Pinot Noir 2012 Composition/AVA: 100% Saffron Fields / 100% Yamhill-Carlton Winemaker s notes: The expressive nose yields lots bing cherry, black raspberry, beet root, clove, allspice and slight fig. The palate is full and lively, showing wild cherry black raspberry, black plum, slight caramel, cherry stone with supple tannins. Wine Spectator 91 points: Gritty tannins underlie generous ripe cherry and floral flavors, turning toward black tea and rose petal notes as the finish lingers. Will benefit from time in the cellar. Best from 2017 through 2022 WS 91 points @ $400/btl Tendril White Label Pinot Noir 2012 Winemaker s notes: Fresh aromas of blackberry, plum, bing cherry, tobacco, sl. Leather and rose petal. The rich, round palate displays black plum, black cherry, boysenberry, allspice, sl. clove, and anise with fine tannins and a supple finish. Wine Spectator 91 points: Plush, generous and focused, with a green olive overtone to the blueberry and spice flavors. Nubby tannins complete the picture as the finish lingers.
