The Elliston Echo JANUARY 2018 WISHING YOU ALL A HAPPY NEW YEAR FOR 2018 Thank you to everyone who attended the Elliston Christmas Community BBQ and Street Party, those who brought a sweet or salad to share and to anyone else who helped out on the day that is not mentioned below. Thank you to the Elliston Men's Shed for cooking the BBQ, Elliston CFS for providing transport for Santa in the CFS truck, District Council of Elliston for blocking off the Memorial Drive and covering insurance costs for this event, Jay Dudley for face painting, Luke Pryor and Ian Dudley for assisting with the tarps at the BBQ to help block the wind, Jill and Tony Leonard and their daughter Katie for assisting with setting up and serving up the ice creams! A BIG THANK YOU to Dave and Julie Allchurch and their grandson who helped organise this event, put in an amazing effort of the setting up and packing up and to Julie for organising games for the children. We are very lucky to have these two in our community, they are always the first to help out at any community events. Thank you to District Council of Elliston for donating funds which was used to purchase the BBQ supplies and also to the Elliston Community and Information Centre for covering any additional costs for the event. It was a great evening enjoyed by everyone who attended the street party. THE ELLISTON MENS SHED INC (TEMS) TEMS is a member of the Australian Mens Shed Assosciation (AMSA), founded only a few years ago and is supported by the Federal Government. It has rapidly expanded to over 1,000 sheds in Australia and many more internationally. New sheds are opening almost weekly. The Assosciation's motto is "Shoulder to Shoulder", with great emphasis on the physical and mental health of it's members. Men are more likely to discuss their health issues while working together (shoulder to shoulder) than they might otherwise do in different circumstances. There is a feeling of belonging in simply meeting casually at the shed for a morning "cuppa" or working on individual/ community projects. We often have speakers on health and aging issues- including CPR and use of our defibrulator, in the event of heart attack. At TEMS, there has been a regular membership of around 15 for the last 3+ years, involving long term residents and new comers to the town. Officially, we are open Monday to Wednesday from 9 to 11 am (some times on other days) with all inclusive meetings on the 2nd Thursday of each month, from 9:30 to 10:30 at the Shed, situated behind the Council offices. The shed has a wide range of tools- woodworking and metalworking amongst others. There is broad expertise within the membership, involving several ex- tradesmen, all of whom are happily prepared to assist others with their projects. The Shed has safety requirements, particularly the "buddy" system, where power tools are not to be used without another member present. Two of our members attend on "gopher's Our community projects have been many and varied- substantial refurbishment of the CWA building and grounds, upgrade at the Kindergarten, work at the golf club and the Information Centre as well as minor help as required at a church and with the aged/infirm. Recently completed projects involve renovation of a portable shearing stand which is operable again and the old jetty trolley, now to be seen at the entrance road to the jetty. The cooking/bbq's at community functions are often undertaken by our members. We are mindful of Elliston's maritime past and actual/planned projects are the refurbishment of 1890's surveying equipment used for the development of Elliston (almost complete), the lower section of an historic jetty crane and excavation/clean up of an origional caste iron mooring, all for later public display. We have had visits from various dignities who attend the town - all have been impressed with our achievements, including the State Governor, Hieu Van Le and Mrs Le, from whom we received a hand written letter of thanks. The District Council of Elliston's officers, staff and elected members very much support our activities and provide valuable assistance for which we are most grateful. Despite the name the Shed is open to all- annual subs are $30. Why not visit when we are open? You never know it could be a new, engaging interest for you.
