Noteworthy Trees 2013 Inventory update by Nickel LaFleur 1998 Inventory by Jill Shepherd (Original list compiled by Master Gardeners in 1985) Turnagain by the Sea Enter off Turnagain Street going north for one block until come to a T and go left (west) to first R turn Lord Baranof. Lots of fine examples inventoried since 1985 -- 1. Amur Chokecherry Prunus maackii. 2312 Loussac Drive. (W side -in front of house) Look for the golden peeling bark. Tree was planted in 1977 and 15 tall in 1998. 2. Willow Salix. The NE corner of Loussac Drive and Arctic Circle. 3. Colorado Blue Spruce Picea pungens. 2202 Lord Baranof. (corner of LB/Illiamna) Note how blue the foliage is compared to the white spruce in the neighborhood. Look for the face on the trunk. 4. White Spruce - Picea glauca. 2524 St. Elias. (west side of street) Very large symmetrical shape. When house exchanged hands in 1977, new owners were told to water the tree for two days straight each spring. 5. Box Elder - Acer negundo. 2628 Turnagain Parkway. Note on all 3 corners of Turnagain Pkwy/Knik) large specimens planted about 1965 or earlier. One at 2628 Turn. still held its leaves in the spring 2013. 6. Mayday Tree Prunus padus. 3120 Knik. (S side of street) Planted first in 1954 from a sucker taken off a tree at a funeral home downtown. Moved another time before being planted at this location in 1958. Birds have carried seeds to the back yard. Many Anchorage residents also refer to this multi-trunked tree as a Bird Cherry. 7. Box Elder - Acer negundo. 3201 Knik (N side of street) 2 large specimens on each side of drive way, planted about 1965 or earlier. Note: no leaves on the tree in spring 2013. 8. Lodgepole Pine - Pinus contorta. 2539 Foraker Drive. (E side near driveway of 2551) Planted about 65 years ago by Mr. Richards, one of the first people in the subdivision. The tree was cabled in 1984 to keep the double trunk from splitting apart. Due to being too close to drive it has been hacked on. 9. European White Birch also called Weeping Birch - Betula pendula. One on each south corner of Iliamna/Douglas and Iliamna/Foraker with another in between those two on south side of Iliamna. Look for the trees with the pendulous branches. 10. European Mountain Ash - Sorbus aucuparia. 2101 Foraker Drive. Corner of Foraker and Iliamna. There are two near the corner; both browsed by moose; a good example of a nice structure is by the driveway. Up until 1985, the trees only once dropped their leaves before snowfall.

11. 11. Lyn Ary Park Trees - Park in lot & walk bike path down. Group of trees were planted in 2007 through a grant from the Rasmussen Foundation with volunteers from Anchorage TREErific and Turnagain Community Council.
