CHAPLAIN S CORNER September: An Ending and A Beginning P A G E 6 Childhood memories of mixed (maybe even bittersweet) emotions in the transition from August to September. Longingly remembering the summer just past with their long, warm sunny days. Days that seemed to last forever; filled with carefree, often even whimsical, hours of imaginative play and the company of friends. A time of doing more of what we wanted and not so much of what we had to do. This annual transition period was also a time of anticipation, as we looked forward to getting back to school and our other Fall pastimes and starting up with those things we have enjoyed in past years or maybe new things coming up in the next year. And this feeling of transition stays with us each year as we grow older, with the summer period of warm weather, the many colors of flora and fauna, experiencing our favorite vacation spots, and the freedom of simply enjoying the great outdoors making the change to focusing more intently on the responsibilities of life and living more of our days inside. Let us remember the comforting wistfulness of both sides of this time of year. As one writer put it, We know that in September, we will wander through the warm winds of summer's wreckage. We will welcome summer's ghost (Henry Rollins). Yes, it is good to look back and survey what the past summer has meant to us. And then to allow that to blend with the upcoming season and it s feelings. [That old September feeling, left over from school days, of summer passing, vacation nearly done, obligations gathering, books and football in the air... Another fall, another turned page: there was something of jubilee in that annual autumnal beginning (Wallace Stegner, Angle of Repose). Which leads us to the annual new beginning pointing us to the sense of fulfillment that comes from our newly restarted responsibilities. In many ways, September feels like the busiest time of the year: The kids go back to school, work piles up after the summer's dog days, [before] Thanksgiving is suddenly upon us (Brene Brown). May each September bring to mind our past and present experiences of the two-fold blessing of our endings and our beginnings in this seasonal change. By all these lovely tokens September days are here, With summer's best of weather and autumn's best of cheer (Helen Hunt Jackson). Chaplain Ken
