ASEAN Women's Circle Monthly Bulletin SECOND EDITION MAY, 2010 The AWC Bulletin has been created with the purpose of providing a one-stop information centre for our members. It is designed with the view of informing our members of our main monthly activities, while at the same time, connect our ASEAN ladies with various hobbies and interest groups. Please provide any comment / feedback or any contribution to ida4872@yahoo.com CONTENTS Section 1 Message from President / Editor 1 Section 2 Minutes of the April AWC Meeting...2 Section 3 Coming up in May 2 Section 4 Hobbies and Interests.3 Section 5 Places to go, things to see in KSA...4 Section 6 Recipe Corner..5 Section 7 Classifieds.6 Section 8 AWC Members Directory 8 SECTION 1 MESSAGE FROM PRESIDENT April has been a fun and fruitful month. For us, the new Exec. Committee for AWC and Country Coordinators, it was a "test" month, as we move ahead with a few new activities, while maintaining the format of some of our more normal events. I would like to take this opportunity to thank Dayang Tetty Hasrina from Brunei for graciously hosting the first ever AWC "Mommy & Me" meeting at her beautiful home on 4 th April. Thank you too to Cathy and Deborah for arranging the "Egg Hunt" activity. As the photos above can attest, a lot of fun was indeed had by all Moms AND Kids alike. A big round of applause goes to all the ladies who attended the event good food, great company and laughing kids. What else can we ask for? May promises to be a rather busy month for us in terms of activities. As this is the final month before most of us go off on summer vacation, it is my sincerest hope that you will take this opportunity to get together with other AWC ladies in attending the activities that suit your own interest, be it the Jewelry Making, Cake Decorating or English Conversation Classes, or Mommy and Me and AWC Coffee Morning. As usual, I would like to encourage you to let us know if there are any other interest groups that you would like to organize under AWC. We will be happy to include it in our monthly bulletin to inform other ladies who may share your same interest. Looking forward to a busy and fulfilling month of May and I would like to take this opportunity to thank you once again for your continued support. Page 1 of 9

May Coffee Morning Everyone pays for their own coffee Venue: Harvey Nichols Restaurant (3 rd Floor Al-Faisaliyah Centre) Date: Wednesday, 26 May 2010 Time: 10.00 12.00 noon SECTION 5 PLACES TO GO THINGS TO SEE IN SAUDI ARABIA Madain Saleh The Lonely Planet Guide said of Madain Saleh: "If you can only visit one place in Saudi Arabia, make it Madain Saleh. This crossroads of ancient civilisations, pilgrims, explorers, trade caravans and armies finds its most remarkable expression in the elaborate stone-carved temples of the Nabataeans." Who were the Nabateans? They were the same people who built the ancient city of Petra in Jordan. As the city of Petra expanded, they built Madain Saleh and the intricate craftsmanship of carving into rocky hills has resulted in both cities being identified as UNESCO World Heritage Site. Madain Saleh is also mentioned in Al-Quran as Al-Hijr. It is located about 750km away from Jeddah, and about 300 km away from Madinah. Definitely a place to be visited during the cooler months, and something to plan for when we return from our summer vacation. CHICKEN PASTA BAKE Ingredients: Topping: 1 1/2 cups dried pasta (penne) Salt, to taste 3 tsp oil 1 small onion, chop finely 60g breakfast beef, chop finely 350g boneless chicken, cut into small pieces 2 medium garlic cloves, pound fine 1 1/4 cups roughly chopped button mushrooms 1/4 cup butter 1/4 cup plain flour 1 1/2 cups chicken stock 1 1/3 cups milk 1/2 cup, lightly packed grated cheddar cheese Freshly ground black pepper, to taste 1/2 cup chopped sun-dried tomatoes scant 1/2 cup finely chopped spring onions 1/2 cup, firmly packed grated mozzarella cheese 1/2 cup, firmly packed grated tasty cheddar cheese Procedure: Cook pasta until just tender. Drain and set aside. Heat one teaspoon of the oil. Add the onion and beef and cook, stirring occasionally, until lightly browned (about seven minutes). Transfer onion and beef mixture to a small bowl. Return pan to medium-high heat. Add remaining two teaspoons of oil to the pan and add chicken. Fry, stirring occasionally, until chicken is lightly browned and cooked through (about six minutes). Add garlic and mushroom to the pan, stir to combine, and then remove pan from the heat and set aside. Preheat oven to 230 degrees Celsius (210 degrees Celsius for convection ovens) Make Cheese Sauce: In the saucepan used to boil the pasta, melt the butter over medium heat. When the butter has melted, add the flour and stir constantly. Once the mixture bubbles, continue cooking and stirring for about 40 seconds. Then add the chicken stock and milk. Increase heat to medium-high. Cook, stirring constantly, until the sauce thickens. At this point, if you tilt the saucepan and use the spoon to push some of the sauce aside, you should be able to see the sauce bubbling on the base of the saucepan. Remove from heat and add 40g tasty cheese, salt and pepper to the saucepan. Mix thoroughly. Assemble and Bake: Add cheese sauce to the rest of the ingredients. Toss well. Sprinkle with mozzarella and cheddar cheese. Put into oven and bake for 15-20 minutes till top is golden brown. Page 6 of 9
