Schl Name Western Autistic Schl ANAPHYLAXIS MANAGEMENT POLICY Schl Statement Western Autistic Schl will cmply fully with Ministerial Order 706 and the assciated Guidelines published and amended by the Department frm time t time. Staff members as well as students may be at risk f anaphylaxis and s this plicy cvers the Management f Anaphylaxis fr all peple at Western Autistic Schl. Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plans The Principal will ensure that an Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan is develped in cnsultatin with the persn r a persn s parents r guardian, fr any persn wh has been diagnsed by a Medical Practitiner, as being at risk f anaphylaxis. The Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan will be in place as sn as practicable after the student enrls at the schl and where pssible befre their first day f schl. Upn receipt f the enrlment frm, where a student is identified as at risk f anaphylaxis, the ffice staff member respnsible fr enrlments, shuld ntify the Campus Principal immediately. The Campus Principal will prmptly rganise a meeting between the student s Parents/Guardians and the persn s teachers where an Individual Anaphylaxis Management Plan fr the persn will be develped. A staff member wh identifies himself r herself at risk f anaphylaxis, will be asked t prvide a spare adrenaline aut injectr and an ASCIA Actin Plan. These will be stred in the same manner as the students. An ASCIA Actin Plan, cmpleted by a Medical Practitiner, is part f the IAMP. See Appendix 1. Parents will prvide the schl with a current pht f their child. Hwever where they are unable t d s, the schl can take a pht f the persn and attach it t the Actin Plan. The schl will then implement and mnitr the persn s IAMP. The persn s IAMP will be reviewed, in cnsultatin with the persn r the persn s Parents in all f the fllwing circumstances; annually; if the persn s medical cnditin, insfar as it relates t allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin, changes; as sn as practicable after the persn has an anaphylactic reactin at Schl; and

when the persn is t participate in an ff-site activity, such as camps and excursins, r at special events cnducted, rganised r attended by the Schl (eg class parties, elective subjects, cultural days, fetes, incursins). It is the respnsibility f the Parents r staff member at risk f anaphylaxis t: prvide the schl with the ASCIA Actin Plan; infrm the Schl in writing if the persn s medical cnditin, insfar as it relates t allergy and the ptential fr anaphylactic reactin, changes and if relevant, prvide an updated ASCIA Actin Plan; prvide an up t date Adrenaline Autinjectr that is current and nt expired fr their child r fr themselves. The First Aid C-rdinatr n each campus, will check the expiry date all Autinjectrs kept n the campus, at the end f each schl term. At least ne mnth befre the expiry date, the First Aid C-rdinatr will infrm the persn r the Parents/Guardians in writing that the Autinjectr needs replacing. A cpy f the ASCIA Actin Plan will be: kept with the persn s autinjectr; displayed in the persn s classrm displayed in the first aid area f the campus displayed in the staffrm f the campus Strage and Care f Adrenaline Autinjectrs Each Adrenaline Autinjectr will be stred in an insulated bag, supplied by the schl, and labelled with a pht f the persn and the persn s name. The Adrenaline Autinjectr insulated bag/s will be stred in an unlcked, easily accessible, secure lcatin n each campus. Each lcatin will be have easily recgnisable signage. - Niddrie - n the shelf in the central ffice - Lavertn - in the identified central ffice cupbard - - Wattle n the First Aid shelf in the staffrm All autinjectrs will be signed ut using the system in place n that campus, when taking the autinjectr frm its usual place, fr example fr walks, excursins r camps. The autinjectrs prvided t the schl by the Parents fr their child s use, remain at the schl and d nt travel hme in the student s bag n a daily basis r at the end f the term r year. When ntified by the schl, Parents will cllect expired autinjectrs frm the Campus ffice and will deliver the new autinjectr t the schl in persn. Autinjectrs are nt t be transprted t and frm schl, n the schl buses.

Preventin Strategies General T minimise the risk f a first time reactin, the schl will nt use any nut based prducts such as peanut butter, Nutella r nut muesli bars in curriculum activities In a class where there is a persn at risk f anaphylaxis, fds, rewards, materials etc shuld nt cntain the substance t which the persn is allergic. N class will supply edible treats fr celebratry ccasins such as Easter. Nn-edible items, such as stickers r small tys, can be given instead. Mealtimes Persns at risk f anaphylactic reactins t fd, will eat nly fd supplied by their Parents at all times while at schl. The persn at risk f anaphylaxis will sit clse t the ther children in his/her rm,but at his/her wn table during mealtimes and nly use cups, plates etc designated fr their use. All tables will be wiped after eating. All persns in a class with a persn at risk f anaphylaxis will wash their hands after eating. Persns at risk f anaphylactic reactins t fd, will NOT take part in cking activities. Cking activities with ther persns in the class, shuld take place in the kitchen and nt the classrm and nt include the substance t which the persn is allergic. Parties and Special Events Parents f a persn at risk f anaphylaxis, will be asked t send t schl, suitable treats fr their child, which will be stred in a cntainer designated slely fr that child. Staff will select treats frm that cntainer fr the student if needed. Excursins When ging n excursin, staff will take with them the autinjectr fr any student at risk f anaphylaxis wh is ging n the excursin, using the campus s methd fr signing autinjcetrs ut and in. On excursin, n fd shuld be purchased fr a persn wh is at risk f anaphylaxis. The persn shuld cnsume nly fd supplied by his/her parents. Travelling n the Bus The bus cmpany plicy is that n fd shuld be cnsumed n the bus t and frm schl. N fd items riginating at schl, shuld be sent hme with any student n the bus, including party llly bags.

Schl Camps At least 10 days prir t a schl camp, a meeting will be arranged between the Campus Principal, the staff attending the camp and the Parents f any persn at risk f anaphylaxis wh is attending the camp. Staff will infrm the Parents f prpsed activities and meal arrangements. A persn at risk f anaphylaxis shuld bring all meals and snacks pre-prepared by his/her Parents and will nly eat fd sent by the parents. Parents f a persn at risk f anaphylaxis will als supply a plate, bwl, cup and cutlery fr use by their child. Schl Management and Emergency Respnse Where it is suspected that a persn is having an anaphylactic reactin: In the classrm - the staff with the persn at that time, shuld ntify the Teacher in Charge f the campus via telephne, that the persn is having an anaphylactic reactin and the exact lcatin f the persn (eg classrm number, O.T.rm). In the Playgrund - ne staff member shuld stay with the persn while a secnd staff member ges t the ffice t ntify the Teacher in Charge f the campus that the persn is having an anaphylactic reactin and the exact lcatin f the persn (eg bike track, playgrund1) and t retrieve the insulated bag cntaining the persn s Adrenaline Autinjectr. The Teacher in charge will immediately ensure that an ambulance is called using the schl s mbile phne, while at the same time, ensuring that anther ffice staff member takes the insulated bag cntaining the persn s Adrenaline Autinjectr, t the persn s lcatin. The call t the ambulance remains pen and the mbile phne is then taken t the lcatin f the persn having the anaphylactic reactin by the Teacher-in - Charge. The Teacher in Charge will ensure that a staff member trained in the Management f Anaphylaxis is with r is called t g t the persn immediately. Adrenaline shuld be administered by the persn trained in the Management f Anaphylaxis, fllwing the persn s ASCIA Actin Plan. The Teacher-in-Charge will ensure that the persn s Parents/Guardians/Next f Kin and the Principal f the schl are cntacted. The Teacher-in-charge will ensure that a staff member ges t the frnt f the schl t direct the ambulance nce it arrives The Principal shuld fllw DEECD Emergency Management Prcedures. The persn wh has administered the adrenaline aut-injectr will - Make a nte f the time that the adrenaline aut-injectr was administered and infrm the paramedics upn their arrival. Ensure that the adrenaline aut-injectr is available t be given t the paramedics if they request it.

Ensure that the used adrenaline aut-injectr is dispsed f prperly, either by remval by the paramedics r by placing it in the Bilgical Hazard BiCan lcated in the first aid rm n each campus. Adrenaline Autinjectrs fr General Use The Principal will purchase an Autinjectr fr each campus, fr General Use and as a back up supplied by the Parents. It will be stred in an insulated bag, which will be labelled Spare Epipen fr General Use. It will be lcated in the same place as the persns autinjectrs n that campus. The Principal will determine the number f additinal Adrelaline Autinjectrs required. In ding s, the Principal will take int accunt the fllwing relevant cnsideratins: the number f persns enrlled at the schl wh have been diagnsed as being at risk f anaphylaxis; the accessibility f persns Adrenaline Autinjectrs; the availability and sufficient supply f Adrenaline Autinjectrs fr General Use in specified lcatins at the Schl, including in the schl yard, at excursins, camps and special events cnducted r rganised by the Schl; Adrenaline Autinjectrs fr General Use have a limited life, usually 12 18 mnths and will be replaced at the Schl s expense, either at the time f use r expiry, whichever is first. Cmmunicatin Plan Staff: The Principal is respnsible fr ensuring that all staff participate in a briefing, twice a year, nce in terms 1 and 3. Fr each persn at risk f anaphylaxis, a cpy f their ASICA Actin Plan, including pht, will be displayed in the campus staff rm. T alert casual staff, a medical alert ntice will be displayed n the classrm dr where there is a persn with a serius medical cnditin, including anaphylaxis. The ASCIA Actin Plan fr each persn within the classrm, will be displayed inside the classrm, next t the telephne. Parents Parents f persns at risk f anaphylaxis will be given a cpy f the Schl s Anaphylaxis Management Plicy and this will be discussed with them during the initital SSG meeting each year. Bus staff It is the respnsibility f parents f persns at risk f anaphylaxis t ntify the bus staff f their child s medical cnditin. Bus staff will then fllw the Plicy and Prcedures as set ut by the Cmpany.

Schl cmmunity The Schl s Anaphylaxis Management Plicy will be published in the Schl s newsletter fr the year and n the schl s website. In additin, twice yearly, infrmatin regarding Anaphylaxis will als be published in the Schl s newsletter. Staff Training The Principal will rganise training annually, at the beginning f the schl year, r when needed, t ensure that any staff, wrking directly with a persn at risk f anaphylaxis, will be apprpriately trained by a recgnised prvider, such as St Jhn. The Principal is respnsible fr ensuring that all staff participate in a briefing, twice a year, nce in terms 1 and 3. Annual Risk Management Checklist The Principal will ensure that The Annual Risk Management Checklist is cmpleted in the first semester f each year and that any actins identified as a result, are acted upn.
