2 Trivia Whiz The Last Frontier Alaska, famous for snowy glaciers and long, dark winters, became the 49th state on Jan. 3, 1959. Here are a few more facts about the land called the Last Frontier: In 1867, U.S. Secretary of State William Seward arranged to buy the Alaskan territory from Russia for $7.2 million. As the largest state, Alaska is more than twice the size of Texas. It is about 1,400 miles from north to south and 2,700 miles from east to west. Alaska s name is based on an Aleut word that means great land. The state motto is North to the Future. Juneau is the only capital city in the United States that is not accessible by road. The town can be reached by boat or airplane. The official state sport is dog mushing. Alzheimer s Awareness Event! Always Being Supportive and Understanding of Those in Our Community! Get Creative! 3 Wit & Wisdom Soup s On Whether it s a hearty chowder or a delicate broth, a bowl of soup can warm you up on a winter day. During National Soup Month in January, take stock of these common types: Chowder. This is a chunky soup that often features pieces of seafood and vegetables. European fishermen introduced chowder to America, where it became a signature dish in New England. Bisque. Originating in France, bisque is a rich, creamy soup traditionally made with pureed shellfish. In the past, recipes called for the shells to be ground into a paste and added to the soup to thicken it. Broth/Stock. The light liquid that remains after cooking meat and vegetables in water and then straining it is called broth. To create stock, meat or fish bones are simmered to create an intense, flavorful base for other recipes. Cream. By itself or used as an ingredient in casseroles and other dishes, this popular soup is made by adding cream to a pureed vegetable or meat stock. Mushroom, tomato and chicken are classic varieties. Consommé. This is a broth or stock that has been clarified, meaning all the tiny bits of food used to create its flavor are removed to create a clear, concentrated soup. Chilled soups. Spanish gazpacho and French-style vichyssoise are common examples of soups that are served cold. Blended or pureed vegetables and fruits create their flavor and texture. A homogeneous blend of milk or cream, beaten eggs, sugar, nutmeg and usually Liquor of some kind, such as Rum, Brandy, or Whiskey. Liquor-free eggnog has long been served to convalescents and growing children as a tonic. Some eggnogs are made by separating the eggs and stiffly beating the egg whites before adding them to the milk mixture, which produces a light air-filled brew. Commercial eggnog is sans liquor and is available in cartons beginning around mid-october. Canned eggnog can be found year-round in some locations. Bon appetit- Chef Sonny and Chef Scott Great Job, Kitchen Team! We just had our bi-annual health department Kitchen inspection and, for the second year in a row, we had NO health violations! Keep up the great work! Remember When: Wooden Sleds For generations of children, the combination of a winter snowfall and a nearby hill made for a day of sledding fun. One of the most popular means of riding the snowy slopes was aboard a Flexible Flyer. The iconic wooden sled with its eagle logo, red metal runners and hardwood seat slats was famous for a revolutionary feature a flexible front-end steering bar that allowed the rider to control their course. Created in 1899 by a New Jersey manufacturer, millions of the sleds were sold up until the 1980s.
7 Fun Challenges for the Year Ahead Is there a novel you ve wanted to read or a hobby you d like to learn? The new year is the perfect time to set some goals you ll enjoy aiming for. Here are some ideas: Reading resolution. Select a number of books or pages you want to read this year, and track your progress. Whether a friend, grandchild or another person in your life, the recipient is sure to smile when reading your words. Eating adventures. There s always a new hobby to master, from watercolor painting and origami to learning how to play poker or chess. The NFL s Pro Bowl On the weekend before the Super Bowl, the NFL s top players take the field for the Pro Bowl, a faceoff between the league s two conferences, the AFC and the NFC. The Pro Bowl tradition kicked off in 1939 with a showdown between that year s league champions, the New York Giants, and a team of all-stars selected by players and coaches. The game followed a similar format for the next few years, until World War II travel restrictions called a timeout on the event. When the competition resumed in 1951, it featured two all-star teams representing each conference. The game has been played every year since then, with warm-weather locales Los Angeles and Honolulu often hosting the contest. Coaches, players and fans now cast votes for the teams rosters of 44 players each. The Pro Bowl used to take place after the Super Bowl, but in 2010, organizers moved it to the week before the big game to draw more TV viewers. To prevent injuries, players whose teams are in the Super Bowl do not compete in the Pro Bowl, and special rules of play have been enacted to protect the participating players. This year s Pro Bowl is Jan. 28 in Orlando, Fla. Laugh Lines Down, Set, Hike! Q: What s the difference between a quarterback and a baby? A: One takes the snap; the other takes a nap. Harry spent all day and night watching football games and fell asleep in his chair in front of the TV. His wife nudged him. Get up and go to bed, dear, it s 20 to 10. Harry woke with a start and asked, Who s winning? Football is not a contact sport, it is a collision sport. Dancing is a contact sport. Duffy Daugherty, Michigan State University coach
January 2018 Nutrition Article: January 2018 Edition of the American House Patriot Health Benefits of Garlic By: Emily Beard, Nutrition Intern This month, I am writing about the health benefits of eating garlic. Garlic is a member of the Allium (a.k.a. Onion) family along with leeks, chives and shallots. It is a great source of calcium, vitamin C, phosphorous, copper, potassium and selenium! You can buy garlic flakes, powder, or paste, but if you truly want to experience all of this herb s flavor and nutritional benefits, then fresh garlic is your best bet!! Fresh garlic is available in grocery stores all year round! Look for bulbs that are plump and have unbroken skin, and are not soft, shriveled or beginning to sprout. Any sign of rotting can greatly affect garlic s flavor and texture. *Tip: gently squeeze the bulb between your fingers and if it feels firm, not damp, then you are choosing good quality garlic! After cutting or crushing garlic, let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes before you use it! This stimulates production of its main beneficial ingredient: allicin. When it comes to cooking garlic, avoid using high heat and remember that the longer it is cooked, the more health benefits are lost! Therefore, it is best to add it to the pan when the food is almost done -OR- add it raw at the very end. Health benefits from eating garlic can include: Improvements in heart health Reduced arthritis pain Lower blood pressure Reduced inflammation Improvements in memory and brain function Better blood sugar control *Interesting fact: garlic could help to reverse hair loss!! According to research in European countries, applying garlic gel on the scalp twice a day for three months showed promise in treating a condition called alopecia (an autoimmune skin disease that results in hair loss all over the body). Keep in mind: If you enjoy eating raw garlic, but hate the garlic breath that results, chew on some fresh parsley or mint leaves to counteract the aftertaste. It really, truly works!!
