Sunset at Coos Village Baldich For thousands of years, our Miluk Ancestors lived at the village they called Baldich or Ocean Place. Baldich is where our Ancestors lived, died, and were buried from as long ago as 2,200 years up to the time the U.S. Government forced our people to Yachats in 1859. Baldich is a sacred site, where contemporary Tribal weddings, funerals, and sacred services have been held, including our annual Sacred Salmon Ceremony, when we return the bones of our first salmon of the year to the ocean. In 1778, Captain James Cook sailed the Discovery and named it Gregory Point because he first saw it on March 12, 1778, which was St. Gregory s Day on his calendar. Baldich has been the site of three lighthouses, built on the tip of Chief s Island, signaling the way to the entrance to Coos Bay. The first lighthouse was built in 1866, the second in 1908. The third and final lighthouse was completed in 1934 and extinguished in 2006. The first bridge, built in 1875-1876, was destroyed by a storm in 1877. The high bridge was built in 1898, rebuilt in 1938, and removed in 2013. Since restoration in 1984, the Confederated Tribes of the Coos, Lower Umpqua, and Siuslaw Indians have sought the return of Gregory Point from the U.S. Coast Guard. At first the Tribes sought to have Baldich transferred administratively. This attempt was unsuccessful as US law restricts transfer options. In 2006, after exhausting options to administratively regain Baldich, the Tribes began pursuing the enactment of federal legislation to transfer Baldich. At this time, the Tribes would be able to protect and preserve archaeological, historical, natural resources, cultural and spiritual qualities of great importance. The Tribes gained the support of the Coos County Commissioners and other community members. In 2008, with the support of Senators Gordon Smith and Ron Wyden, and Representative Peter DeFazio, legislation was introduced in Congress to restore Baldich to the Tribes. The vision of generations of Tribal Members was realized when Public Law 110-364 was enacted on October 8, 2008, directing the return of Gregory Point and Chiefs Island to the Confederated Tribes within five years. The Tribes, the Bureau of Indian Affairs, and the Coast Guard signed a Memorandum of Agreement detailing how, working together, we would map the property, clean up any environmental contamination, and remove any other safety hazards, including the old bridge. On May 28, 2013, Baldich was ceremonially handed over to the Tribes from the U.S. Coast Guard. At a special ceremony on August 3rd, 2013, Coast Guard Capt. Mark Reynolds, symbolically signed over the 23-acre property in a ceremony at Baldich. Tribal members, Tribal Council, and members of the U.S. Coast Guard attended the special ceremony. Throughout our effort to regain this land, we have maintained we will be responsible stewards of the land and all of its resources cultural, historical, and natural. We are both proud and honored to be able to assume responsibility for this most-meaningful place. Our ancestors now rest in peace knowing we have this land back and all who walk here will be respectful of the land. We have come full circle. Bal diyaka represents the Tribes past and future. Tribal Members continue to go to Bal diyaka to visit the Tribal Cemetery, pay respect to the Ancestors, meditate on the wonders of Earth and Ocean, and ceremonially return the bones of the year s first salmon to the sea. We are again home with a strengthened sense of belonging and a deeper sense of peace, the land is once again the place of the Ancestors and the place of the children.
