The Wealth and Trade By Diego Soto The vast riches that you could encounter in Medieval Africa could just be enough to persuade you to visit on the spot. Here, salt is as valuable, maybe even more valuable, than gold. The reason for this is because salt is a necessary. Gold was valuable back then and because it is a soft metal, it can be crafted into vases and pottery easier. Because of it s beauty, the value of gold still is high, even in modern times. The empires of Ghana and Mali even used gold as currency, due to the amount of it they had. Mali and Ghana themselves as a empire were very rich. They had wealth that they built mainly through trade. Other things you could trade for are ceramics, glass, copper, and palm oil. Some people might be anxious that they will get robbed or worse during their adventures trading, but a method called silent barter could help ease you. The method can make it where you never even have to meet or even see the person you are trading with. If you wanted to trade with someone, you would first make your offer and place it on a certain place worked out before. Then you would https://docs.google.com/document/d/1avfekc KS0gjWSXo3RZzix3yXh27RFZARPxf8Fy-jc/edit 2/8

play a drum, indicating that you had made an offer and were ready for them to make an offer back. Once you heard a drum, you would come back and either accept or deny the offer, insuring that the traders, which could be you, maintained their safety and the secret of where they got their goods. If you travel to Medieval Africa with the intent to trade, you will most likely get taxed for coming in and for the amount of goods you received by trading. This might sound like an unpleasant idea at first, but rest assure, the amount of gold you will get taxed will be greatly outnumbered by the money you will make with the gold you take back to modern times. Trade in this period of time was advanced due to methods such as silent barter and even markets were a great place to trade. Trade overall was one of the biggest reasons why Ghana and Mali was a powerhouse in Medieval times. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1avfekc KS0gjWSXo3RZzix3yXh27RFZARPxf8Fy-jc/edit 3/8

Famous Rulers By: Kaylie H. Some of the famous rulers were Mansa Mansa, Sundiata, and Tunka Manman. Mansa Musa ruled Mali and expanded the empire. The empire of ghana reached its peak under Tunka manin. Mali was a famous muslim king that controlled Western Africa. Sundiata was Mali s son and also sundiata built a huge army and won his liberty. Many of the rulers offered resources like gold, salt, silk, and new clothes. Sundiata later on turned Mali into an empire. Fact: Also that tunka manin came from a geographer that wrote about ghana! Tunka manin ruled around 1068. Sundiata later built a huge army and controlled the trade. Mali s rise to power began under a ruler named Sundiata. The king had a splendid court where he displayed the vast wealth! https://docs.google.com/document/d/1avfekc KS0gjWSXo3RZzix3yXh27RFZARPxf8Fy-jc/edit 4/8

Savanna would be an interesting place to explore because there are lions and many more animals such as warthogs. Desert The desert is a place with lots of sand and a little bit of plants and it barely rains in the desert. You can have so much fun sledding down the sand hills and look at all the unique animals. Rainforest The Rainforest is place that gets lots of rain and has many trees, with many exotic animals. These animals have a lot of history behind them. Delta The delta is a place that is shaped as a triangle and it is at the mouth of a river it is also a great place for farming. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1avfekc KS0gjWSXo3RZzix3yXh27RFZARPxf8Fy-jc/edit 5/8

Sahara Sahara is a desert in the north it is known as the world s largest desert. The Sahara desert would be good place to camp at. Sub saharan Sub saharan africa or south africa of sahara. This would be a fun place to hike at because it is a long path. Niger river The niger river is the 3d largest river in africa. It was also a major help to the Empires of Ghana and Mali. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1avfekc KS0gjWSXo3RZzix3yXh27RFZARPxf8Fy-jc/edit 6/8

Spread Of Arabic And Islam By: Erik Galfayan The Trans Saharan trade was in the center of many great empires. Arabs established trading communities and introduced camels, which made trade and travel much easier. If you want to travel back to medieval times and go to Africa, there would not be any need to worry about transportation, because there are camels to take you through the Sahara Desert, or any place in Africa, while carrying most of your belongings. Arabic traders did not only bring trade to Africa, they also brought a language, numbers, and an alphabet to Medieval Africa. Thanks to the Arabic people, the Africans have a new language, and a new way to write, so we can understand them, well if we can understand Arabic. Spread Of Arabic & Islam Continued... https://docs.google.com/document/d/1avfekc KS0gjWSXo3RZzix3yXh27RFZARPxf8Fy-jc/edit 7/8

Arabic traders needed to communicate with the Africans, so they taught them their language. Without the language of the Arabic, the Africans would not be able to buy and sell things to and from the Africans. The Africans also used one of the traditions of the Arabic, where whenever a king passed away, the throne would be passed down from the king to the king s sister s son. Soooo if you wanted to go to Medieval Africa, would recommended you to learn at least a little bit of Arabic, or else if you go there, you probably would not understand what they are saying. By the way, you should learn Arabic if you want to buy any souvenirs, to take home. I Thanks to the Arabic people and the religion of Islam, the Africans were able to adapt to different cultures and traditions, which allowed there to be many different cultures that people from other nations would be able to relate with. If you were planning to go back in the past to Medieval Africa, there are going to be many cultures Hey! Maybe there might be a culture that you embrace! I recommend you go to Medieval Africa, and you can have lots of fun there, with all of the different cultures and dances that are in Medieval Africa. https://docs.google.com/document/d/1avfekc KS0gjWSXo3RZzix3yXh27RFZARPxf8Fy-jc/edit 8/8
