Look for the Fall issue of the Golden Gourd in your inbox mid November. The deadline for the issue is October 15th. Thank you, Mary Bliss Editor Golden Gourd President s Message Summer is over, vacations are only memories and kids are back in school. I love the cooler evenings. Some of you at higher altitudes or in the northern part of the state are experiencing cooler days as well. That means that it is nearly time to harvest our gourd crop. Remember to be sure the gourds are no longer getting nourishment from the mother plant before you cut them off the vine. Otherwise they with shrivel and rot and we don t want that after all the TLC we have given them so far. I hope you enjoy this Special Edition. I am so pleased that so many of our CGS members joined in the state and local competitions throughout the state. Congratulations to all who entered! Let me encourage each of you to check out your local fairs. Find out what the deadline is for entering for next year and put it on your calendar. Then start creating that special gourd to enter in the competition next year. I just got back from a few days in Sacramento and I visited the California State Fair. Our fellow member, Elaine Linton, entered a gourd in the Fine Arts category. I talked to the lady in the fine art building and she told me that each year there are about 1200 entries submitted. It is a juried show so when you apply you have to send a photo. Only 300 entries are chosen. Yes, only a forth of the applications are accepted and allowed to be displayed in this building. Each accepted entry is awarded either an Award of Merit or an Award of Excellence. So being chosen to display your art in the fine arts division is truly an honor. Be sure to congratulate Elaine for her achievement.
