Notes on Disease Resistant Vegetable Varieties An asterisk (*) means the variety has resistance to one of the major plant diseases that affects that crop. In the case of the Cucurbit family (cucumbers, summer squash, winter squash and melons), we have 5 varieties with resistance to powdery mildew. Powdery mildew shows as a whitish/gray powder on the plant leaves. It can be a problem during periods of high humidity. In the Solanaceae family (tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant), we have 4 varieties of tomatoes and 1 pepper variety with resistance to early blight and/or late blight. Early blight (despite its name) tends to become noticeable right around harvest time. It can reduce the harvest of quality fruit. Late blight is the blight that caused the great Irish potato famine. It can strike at any time in the season and causes total loss. One of the best strategies is to plant resistant varieties. Please see our website for other suggestions on how to prevent diseases in your tomatoes. These blight resistant tomatoes are only offered in 4 pots this year. These are relatively new varieties and the seeds are expensive. We hope that in a few years the seeds for these (and other new blight resistant varieties) will be a lot less expensive and we can offer blight resistant varieties in six-packs.
