EVALUA'rION OF SWEET CORN CULTIVARS - 1983 Columbus and Fremont 11 k 1. 1 1 Wl lam M. Broo s, James D. Utzlnger, Stanley F. Garske, Gerald G. Myers 1, and Charles C. Willer2 The 1983 Sweet Corn Cultivar Trials at The Ohio State University Horticultural Farm, 1000 West Lane Avenue, Columbus, consisted of twenty-eight cultivars which were replicated four times and twentyfour cultivars in non-replicated, single plots. The data obtained from these plots was of little value since there was much physical damage caused by the influx of redwing blackbirds and raccoons. Therefore, none of the data from the Columbus plots is presented in this publication. The 1983 Sweet Corn Cultivar Trials at Fremont consisted of twentyeight cultivars which were replicated four times. Corn was seeded May 13 at Fremont in rows 36" apart with hills spaced 18" apart in the row. Single-row plots of 21 hills were 31.5' long. Blocks and tiers of plots were separated by a distance of at least six feet. Guard rows were planted to the north and south sides of rows running east and west. All plots were planted by hand jabbers with four kernels per hill. Plants were thinned to two plants per hill at the two to three leaf stage. Prior to planting the sweet corn at Fremont, 15-15-15 fertilizer was broadcast at the rate of 1000 pounds per acre. One hundred fifty pounds of 6-24-12 fertilizer was placed in bands at planting. The sweet corn was sidedressed with ammonium nitrate at the rate of 50 lbs. N/acre on June 15. Three quarts of Lasso per acre were used for weed control. Sevin was applied on June 4 to control flea beetles. Sprint was harvested on July 26, which was two days earlier than the next maturing cultivar. The highest yielding cultivars for each color type in dozens of marketable ears per acre were: Yellow: 1) Gold Winner - 1733, 2) Golden Glade - 1684, 3) Merit - 1364; White: 1) Silver Streak - 1944, 2) Silver Sensation - 1892, 3) Sterling - 1639; and Bicolor: 1) Sweet Sal 1515, 2) BiQueen - 1316, 3) Double Delight - 1283. The variety Sterling had the heaviest ear weight and had the highest percent of marketable sweet corn. Golden Glade had the longest ear, and Merit had the ear with the greatest diameter.
