Shiraz 2009 Mike Bennie, WBM National (Australia), 1 July 2012 Smooth and rounded tannins make for an ease of drinking and though fruit flavours are simple, they are bright, ripe and attractive. Dark and red berries are the impact, a touch of nougat oakiness, plush texture for generosity. James Halliday, Wine Companion Magazine (Australia), December 2011 91 points Bright, light crimson, the bouquet is fragrant, with black fruits and attractive oak, the palate focussed and long, with fruit, spice, licorice and earthy tannins all woven together. Will repay patience. Cellar until 2019. 5 stars. 91 points. Kerry Skinner, Illawarra Mercury (Australia), 15 October 2011 From Katnook's entry label and an entree to what consumers can expect from the estate and premium releases. Top value, bright black and red berry fruit, spice and peppery characters lovely balance, supple tannins. Patrick Haddock, Wining Pom (Australia), 30 September 2011 I like Coonawarra Shiraz in the way it has nothing to prove, Cabernet of the region is the show pony and this sits in the wings without being too demonstrative. I like this Katnook wine, I think it s attractive, a good all rounder. On the nose it shows inky black fruits, perhaps some leather strap, licorice and charry oak. The palate has a cascading texture of silky plum, soft tannins, some vanillin oak making for a harmonious and balanced wine for the price. Jeff Collerson, Daily Telegraph (Australia), 3 September 2011 This has a dark berry bouquet with a background of spicy oak. Supple mouth feel is nicely textured with raspberry like fruit finishing with savoury characters. Just 30 per cent spent nine months in oak. Well made. Good with hamburgers. Ross Noble, The Courier (Australia), 25th August 2011 Shiraz was grown in Coonawarra many decades before cabernet became the main red identified with the cool region. One of the oldest wineries there releases its Founder's Block range at an encouraging price. The Katnook Estate Founder's Block Shiraz 2009 is a vibrant red with good color, a fragrant bouquet and a medium bodied palate of ripe fruit well integrated with oak Andrew Caillard MW, Langton's website (Australia), August 2011 Deep colour. Intense fragrant campari/ red cherry/ blueberry smoky incense aromas. Medium weighted wine with red cherry/ campari/ chinotto like flavours, slinky loose knit tannins. Finishes chalky firm and long.
