Asparagus Jumbo sizing has been slightly affected by the weather. Will see this trend for next 2 weeks. Supply is light Avocado Markets are easing back as inventories begin to improve and relieve pressure on the markets. Sizing is still mixed and shorter on the smaller grades. We expect this condition to continue through the first week of October. Bananas Demand on this item remains firm and supplies are expected to remain good through the rest of the year. Broccoli, Cauliflower, Broccolini Brussels Sprouts and Green Onions Broccoli - Supplies are steady Cauliflower-Supplies are down due to cooler temps. Demand is slightly better and the markets are slowly going up, and quality is great. Broccolini - Market is back to normal and prices are back to being stable. Brussels Sprouts- Supplies are light. We are hearing Lemons can remain very expensive and poor quality until SEPTEMBER/OCTOBER WHEN CALIFORNIA HARVEST WILL BEGIN!!! Oranges - We are seeing shortage in supply and a higher market. This might become even shorter in supply and will probably last until the domestic Valencia market is in full swing. We are suggesting that you move to a larger fruit (smaller count size like a 72 or 56). Smaller fruits are nearly nonexistent. Currently in an Act of God Clause is being used for smaller fruit and prices are expected to increase!! Eggs Product is back to normal supply and prices have stabilized. Market is expected to remain good for Summer months Eggplant Both sizes are in good supply. Grapes This is continuing to be a mixed market out of the Central market out of the Central Valley based on sizing. Smaller size is more consistently available and better quality on both red and green colors. We are seeing good volume in supply and price remains stable. from farm to kitchen...about a few of our local farms Weiser Family Farms: Weiser Family Farms began in 1977 when Sid Weiser and his wife Raquel laid down roots in Tehachapi, California. There, they learned to tend to the fruit trees... apples, peaches, and pears. In the ensuing years, they acquired farmland in other locations where they branched out into a variety of fruits, vegetables, and flowers. We are no longer stocking their heirloom melon mix, and their season is ending. Look for them to only be available through market preorder for as short as only the next week. Please speak with your sales rep. Del Cabo Farms: Having already created Jacobs Farm, a successful organic farming operation, and with a knack for developing niche markets, longtime organic farmers Larry Jacobs and Sandra Belin were confident in their vision for their next venture. In 1985, they encountered a community of struggling, subsistence-level farmers in Mexico, and the Del Cabo cooperative was conceived. The idea of farm- and community-centered production supported by international market opportunities proved to be successful. Today, this collaboration between Jacobs Farm and the Baja growers provides over 400 farming families with needed training in organic growing, harvesting, and handling, as well as start-up funds, farming technology, administrative training, and consistent distribution channels ensuring the best return for small-scale farms. Scarborough Farms: For over 20 years, Scarborough family farm has been dedicated to growing some of the highest quality, most vibrant, aesthetically appealing specialty produce on the planet. Their small scale, custom farming methods ensure fresh, just harvested gourmet products that taste wonderful and have a longer shelf life. They have earned a reputation for deeply caring for the land and for fulfilling the ever evolving tastes of American cuisine. Grown only in the United States, Scarborough Farms produce is grown according to strict state and federal regulations. They follow good agricultural practices to ensure that everything we grow is not only beautiful and nutritious, but safe to eat, as well. Babe Farms: Babe Farms was founded in March of 1986 by Will Souza and four partners. With deep roots in the Santa Maria Valley, Mr. Souza was a well established, third generation farmer of conventional vegetables. Inspired by his extensive travels throughout Europe, where he discovered the availability and popularity of baby-sized fresh produce, Babe Farms was born. Frog Hollow Farm Their beautiful organic fruit is finally at the Santa Monica Market, but only every other Wednesday. Their next visit will be 10/10. Warren pears are a favorite of our Chefs. Their Emerald Beaut Plums are exceptional as well. Please preorder with your rep as these go fast. Penryn Orchards They have amazing Yali and Hosui Asian pears. They are only at the Wednesday Market Tenerelli Farms We are stocking his amazing yellow peaches. They are at peak for the next 3 weeks. His yellow nectarines and his plums have been incredible this last week. Do not miss them. He is there both Wednesday and Saturday Pomegranates, Pears, and Apples are slowly showing up at the market with Persimmons coming to market in the next 2 weeks. Briar Patch will be one of the first. We have seen Murrays with a haychia and Arnett Farms with coffee persimmon, but we suggest waiting a couple of weeks after talking to all of our farmers. Coastal Organics Mark s tomato season is winding down and will finish out at the market in the next week or two. He will be switching to his fall crops with are beautiful and delicious. All the colors of radishes and turnips. Don t miss the hinona kabu turnips! Arugula, spinach, green and red mustards just to name a few.
