INN TOUCH 3 NOV/DEC 2012 Pub News Competitions keep the customers Shady Oak, Tarporley The Shady Oak, Tarporley is a traditional destination pub, situated in a beautiful canal side location serving up wholesome food that your mum used to make! Recently the pub hosted a Ukefest, which included a ukulele group from Nantwich, Cheshire, entertaining the customers with an array of songs ranging from the traditional to the unusual. As our photos show, the event was a great success attracting new and existing customers. This type of event forms part of a comprehensive calendar of activity to help ensure the pub continues to go from strength to strength. Licensee, Annette is quite pragmatic in her approach and says, Because we don t have any passing trade, we HAVE to hold regular events simply to give customers a reason to visit. However, Annette is also quick to point out that if you re going to hold an event you have to do it properly and with enthusiasm. You get out of anything what you put in and we enjoy the challenge, says Annette. That s why at the time of going to press, the pub was getting ready for a week of Halloween activities such as Thriller tribute acts and fancy dress for kids and adults alike. Christmas celebrations and Burns Night preparations were well underway too and let s not even get started on the many events booked into the calendar already for 2013!! We d like to say well done to all the team at the Shady Oak and we re certain that with all the activity planned 2013 will be another success for them all. Tribute night to a much loved local Green Baise, Glasgow Pubs are so much more than somewhere to have a quiet drink with friends, they are an integral part to every community, helping them celebrate the good times and supporting them in the low times. The Green Baise proved this recently when they held a tribute night in memory of a much loved local, Grant Gallacher, who had passed away aged just 44. The Grant Gallacher Memorial Trust was set up in his memory and it was they who held the first fundraising night at the pub earlier this year. They exceeded all their expectations when generous locals raised a staggering 1,160 for the Trust. The event received prizes and support from many local companies and the resident DJ donated his time to get the party started on a high with a lively disco and karaoke. Everyone at the Green Baize is keen to ensure that Grant s memory is kept alive with several more events planned for the future at the heart of the community where he lived, and importantly, within the pub he loved to visit. The pub has always had plenty of atmosphere and customers have always loved it s cosiness, but it was felt it was time for it to be freshened up. I m sure you will agree from the photos the place looks much brighter, giving it a fabulous facelift as well as great new kerb appeal. Now licensee, Jayne Smith, is working hard to ensure that customers, old and new are welcome and entertained each time they come through the door. Well done all. Having previously being a customer at the pub before taking on the tenancy two years ago, Rick could see the enormous potential the pub had. Fortunately, so could Trust Inns! Since the refurbishment which took in every aspect of the pub from external decorations and signage to a new bar servery, kitchen area and toilets, as well as opening out the lounge bar of the pub, the Rifleman s has gone from strength to strength. Average customer spend has increased and new visitors are slowly becoming regular faces to this stunning, modern Cheshire pub. Sunday carvery lunches have increased from approximately 40 to nearer 200 covers. The pool table revenue has jumped a staggering 2000% and customer satisfaction has gone through the roof. This is a transformation that has more than proved its worth in just a few short months. We look forward to seeing what else the Rifleman s team can achieve in the coming year. INN TOUCH 5 NOV/DEC 2012 Estate Development Newton Arms, Dalton in Furness The Newton Arms was a typical tired old community pub that needed some TLC. Trust Inns recently refurbished the pub from the outside in, creating wider open trading areas and bright airy rooms that have consequently brought new and old customers back into the pub to help improve trade. INN TOUCH NOV/DEC 2012 15 Legislation Health, Safety and Public Liability Health & Safety and Fire Risk Assessments Doing a proper health and safety risk assessment of your business can help save lives. It is not about ticking boxes, but about devising a safe system that works for you, your staff and your customers. Trust Inns provides a Health & Safety manual for all its licensees. The manual provides details on all areas of Health & Safety and Fire Risk Assessments such as: Licensing due diligence, training and documentation. Fire alarm, fire fighting equipment and emergency lighting maintenance, testing and recording. First aid training requirements Staff training programme and recording (required within licensing, fire risk assessment and health and safety plans) Annual PAT testing for electrical equipment. Public Liability and Employers Liability Insurance There are few things in life more dull than shopping around for business insurance! As lessees you not only have a contractual obligation to have Public Liability and Employers Liability Insurance, but you also have a legal obligation. As a responsible company, Trust Inns also has a responsibility to check that you have these insurances in place. That s why your BDM may recently have asked to check your insurance cover. As always, if you need any advice on insurance cover your BDM will be more than happy to assist, alternatively there are several insurance companies specialising in the pub industry that can be found in most trade publications and on the internet. We believe by equipping our lessees with all the skills they need, they will be more likely to run a successful and sustainable pub business. I thought that after running my pub and that I was doing ok, it wouldn t be relevant. But as the course was held in my function room I couldn t help but over hear what was said, and found myself joining in. John, the trainer, put it in such a way that was entirely relevant to how I run my pub. And I definitely learnt a thing or two! I ve come away with a much better understanding of how important my GP% (Gross Profit) is and I know that in the future I ll be costing things out much more effectively and making sure I no longer overspend.
