Explain the Skill Calculations with Money When adding and subtracting money it is important to keep the decimal point lined up. The decimal point separates the whole pounds from the pence. The units for money in the UK are either pounds or p pence. 100p = 1 50p = 0.50 Money is always written with two digits after the decimal point. You buy a coffee for 1.95 and a newspaper for 70p. You pay with a 5 note. How much change will you get? First you need to add up the cost of the coffee and newspaper. 1.95 + 0.70 = 2.65 Then you need to subtract the total cost from 5 5.00-2.65 = 2.35 So you will get 2.35 change. www.bksb.co.uk 3
Practise the Skill 1. You are planning a party and want to spend 20 on food, 15 on drinks and 10 on decorations. You have a budget of 50. Can you afford to buy what you have planned? Yes/No 2. You are going to a concert. The ticket costs 28.50 and your train fare costs 7.20. You spend 14.80 on food and drinks when you are at the concert. How much have you spent in total? 3. Your friend is training for a fun run. He buys a top for 12.99, a pair of shorts for 6.75 and a pair of trainers for 34.50. How much does he spend altogether? 4. You have 13.60 in your purse. You would like to buy a birthday present for 11.95 and birthday card for 1.60. Do you have enough money to buy these things? Yes/No 5. You buy a sandwich for 3.45 and a latte for 2.10. You pay with a 10 note. How much change will you get? www.bksb.co.uk 4
Explain the Skill Value for Money Calculations When items are in sizes that are multiples of each other, it is sometimes easy to work out which is the best value. Which jar of coffee is the best value? Coffee 100 g 2.90 Coffee 200 g 5.00 The bigger jar of coffee is twice the size of the smaller jar, so it is easy to compare the prices. To buy 200 g you need to buy 2 x 100 g jars which would cost 2.90 x 2 = 5.80 The 200 g jar costs 5.00 So the 200 g jar is better value. Sometimes you need to work out the best value when you buy multiple packs of items. You will need to work out how much each item costs. Total price number of items = price per item When you have worked out the price of each item in the multipack, you can then compare the price with other packs. Chocolate bar 45 p each Pack of 5 Chocolate bar costs 2.00 A pack of 5 chocolate bars costs 2.00 so to work out the cost of each bar: Total price number of items = price per item 2.00 5 = 40p An individual bar costs 45p. So the pack of 5 chocolate bars is better value. www.bksb.co.uk 5

Explain the Skill Calculations with Measures You sometimes have to carry out calculations using measurements. To add and subtract length, weight and capacity, all the measurements must be in the same units. For length - all millimetres, all centimetres, all metres or all kilometres weight - all grams or all kilograms capacity - all millilitres or all litres You are going on a ferry with your car and caravan. The length of your car is 4.8 metres. The caravan is 7 metres long. What is the total length of the car and the caravan? You need to add the lengths of the two pieces together. Total length = 4.8 m + 7 m = 11.8 m You start painting your fence. The fence is 70 metres long. You have painted 48 metres so far. How much is left to paint? You need subtract 48 m from 70 m. 70-48 = 22 m You are buying some Pick n Mix sweets. You check the weight of the sweets. They weigh 180 grams. You want to make it up to 400 grams. How many more grams of sweets do you need? You need to subtract 180 g from 400 g. 400 180 = 220 g www.bksb.co.uk 8
You go out walking. You take 1 litre of water with you. At the end of the walk you have 0.4 litres of water left. How much water did you drink? You need to take 0.4 litres from 1 litre. 1.0 0.4 = 0.6 ml Practise the Skill 1. You are repairing your fence and need to buy a piece of wood measuring 12 m and another piece 7.5 m long. What is the total length of wood you need? 2. Maya goes to a market and buys: 400 grams of onions 250 grams of mushrooms 320 grams of peppers How heavy is her shopping altogether? 3.
