RFA Certification RFA (Rainforest Alliance) All of our farms and mills are RFA (Rainforest Alliance) Certified. Hacienda Rio Negro is the first Rainforest Alliance Certified farm in Costa Rica. Rainforest Alliance works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Its certification is built on the three pillars of sustainability environmental protection, social equity and economic viability and encourages farmers to grow crops and manage ranchlands using supportive methods. 9
ENVIRONMENTAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT All weeding is done by hand we do not use herbicides or pesticides. Soil testing is conducted twice each year and fertilizer formulas are developed to keep the soil in proper harmony. 300 acre forest reserve of old growth woodlands was set aside more than 20 years ago as a nature refuge. We have over half century of history demonstrating the progressive evolution of our farming model. 10

Other CSR Activity 1.Support for employees and their families Housing for full time farm workers. Day care centers during the harvest period for coffee pickers and farm workers. We provide workers' children with school supplies and materials. 2. Environmental conservation efforts We reduce our power expenses by 30% and also contribute to the environment by using a clean power source. The parchment skin is a sub-product of coffee with very good fuel qualities. Instead of throwing it away we use ovens with a specific technology that allows to use parchment skin instead of wood as fuel. The cherry skin is a waste product generated by our mills. By using it to produce organic compost we reduce pollution and give back nutrients to the soil at our farms. 3.
