Review f Pearl Millet Research Pearl millet is the staple cereal in arid and drier semi-arid regins f cuntry. It is the nly cereal crp that is capable f prducing a reliable yield under the marginal envirnments and simultaneusly respnds t high management cnditins. Its nutritius grain frms the imprtant cmpnent f human diet and stver frms the principal maintenance ratin fr ruminant livestck during the dry seasn. In additin, pearl millet grain is increasingly being used as feed fr livestck and pultry. Pearl millet is the mst widely cultivated cereal in India after rice and wheat. It is grwn n mre than 9.3 m ha with current grain prductin f 9.5 m tnnes and prductivity f 1044 kg/ha. The majr pearl millet grwing states are Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh and Haryana which accunt fr mre than 90% f pearl millet acreage in cuntry. Pearl millet can easily prvide ecnmical grain yield (600 700 kg ha -1 ) under marginal and lw management cnditins with the additinal ability t prduce a grain yield f 4-5 t/ha when hybrids f 80-85 days maturity are grwn in summer seasn crp under irrigated and high fertility cnditins. Pearl millet research is cnducted thrugh the All India Crdinated Research Prject f the Indian Cuncil f Agricultural Research. The 13 AICPMIP prject centres are lcated in Rajasthan, Maharashtra, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu with Central Crdinating Unit lcated at Jdhpur, Rajasthan. In additin, there are 18 cperating centres and mre than 30 partners frm private sectr. The brief review f the prgress f research and salient achievements during 2010-11 are presented here. 1. Trends in pearl millet cultivatin The trends in area, prductin and prductivity f pearl millet suggest that area has increased marginally (2%) during last tw years and prductivity has gne up by 19% (Table 1). Hybrid RHRBH 9808 was released fr Maharashtra. 3. Genetic enhancement A significant prgress was made during the year 2010-11 in genetic enhancement f crp. The 159 experimental new cultivars were evaluated in 15 trials during kharif and summer f 2010 at cmbinatin f 64 lcatins in fur agr-climatic znes f pearl millet (Table 2). A wide range in prtein (7.4-13.2%) and fat (4.0-7.1%) cntents was bserved in the test material demnstrating that their exists enugh pprtunity t select fr quality parameters in additin t high grain and stver yields. 6. Breeder seed Prductin During the current year the breeder seed prductin f 22 parental lines (A, B & R) f hybrids and f 9 OPVs was rganized. A ttal f 22.66 q f breeder seed was prduced which is 121% higher ver indented quantity f 10.22 q frm Department f Agriculture & Cperatin, Ministry f Agriculture. 7. DUS test and registratin f cultivars with PPV & FRA The DUS testing was undertaken as per apprved guidelines f PPV & FRA during kharif 2010. Three candidate varieties (VBBHH 3040, JKBH 778 and JKBH 768) alng with six reference/example varieties were tested fr secnd year at AICPMIP, Jdhpur and MPKV, Rahuri. Five candidate varieties (KBMS 329, KBR 621, BIO 448 H, KBH BOSS 65 and HT PM 4201 and seven reference varieties tested fr secnd year. Observatins n candidate and reference varieties n twenty six characters were recrded as per general and specific DUS. Thirteen extant varieties (PUSA 605, PHB 2168, GHB 744, Pusa Cmpsite 443, GHB 577, HHB 146, PCB 164, HHB 94, RHB 90, PUSA 415, CZP IC 923, PUSA 444, RHB 58) f pearl millet were apprved fr registratin by PPV & FRA. The mnitring team chaired by Dr. S. Dass visited the DUS experiments at AICPMIP, Jdhpur n 15.09.10 and at Rahuri n 17.09.10. One day training n awareness n PPV & FRA was rganized at AICPMIP, Jdhpur in which 21 researchers frm public and private sectrs participated. 8. A range f breeding material was evaluated at 13 AICPMIP centres in rder t select adapted lines t varius znes. A ttal f 248 R lines and 182 B lines were assessed by AICPMIP breeders and many f them were selected fr utilizatin in their breeding prgramme. In additin, 2 ppulatins were grwn ver 12 lcatins fr selectin and further inbreeding t derive new parental lines f hybrids. Selected genetic materials were als assessed fr high irn and zinc cntents and salinity tlerance. Phentyping f selected material was accmplished fr mapping QTLs fr drught tlerance and ther traits. 9.
