1 BOW N n STERN STERN BOW The Sheboygan Yacht Club June 2018 Dates to Remember Commodore s Comments Spring has finally officially arrived, and there are many exciting things for us members to look forward to in the months ahead! Let s face it, if you are a boat owner or just a summer enthusiast, our season is very short here in Sheboygan. We have to take full advantage of this time of year and what better place to enjoy the beauty of the lakefront than at your club! The basin will start to fill with our favorite pastime, the grounds will be manicured, the events will be plentiful, and the club will be at its best! This is our time to shine! This is what we wait for so long all winter, and it is finally here! Our club is special year-round but the months ahead are when we show our true colors! Do yourself a favor and come down and enjoy all that we have to offer. Invite your friends to join you. It is a special time of year! If you have not heard yet, the House Committee has a very exciting announcement. They have hired a professional chef and a few of his past staff for our galley operations. We are so happy to welcome Chef Benjamin Sommerfeldt to our family! He brings to us a very impressive resume with his most recent position being Head Chef and Manager of Lola s on the Lake at the Osthoff Resort in Elkhart Lake. Chef Benjamin fully understands the dynamics of our club s dining needs, and he will look to enhance them in all aspects. He will provide us with some outstanding specials and entrées along with what he describes as simple food done right. Chef Benjamin s first brunch this past Mother s Day was simply amazing! Approximately 230 lucky people got just a glimpse of what we have to look forward to with this very talented crew! I truly believe this galley staff will take our club to a new level that we have not seen before! Please come down and taste for yourself; you will not be disappointed! Next on the club s agenda is the Lakefront Open House which is scheduled for Saturday, 2 June. Please invite your friends, tell your co -workers or anyone else that may have an interest in joining. Our Membership Committee, along with many other organizations on the lakefront, have put together a special day to showcase what we have to offer the community. Plan on spending the day and then kick off the Unofficial Start of Summer with our popular Sock Burning Party! Exciting times ahead! See you at our club! ~Commodore Mike June 2 June June July July 14 28 3 4 Lakefront Open House and Sock Burning General Membership Meeting SYC Book Club Venetian Night Brat Fry, Dinner, and Fireworks Hours LUNCH 11:30 to 1:30 Wed-Thu-Fri DINNER 5:00 to 9: 00 Tuesday through Sunday **Dinner reservations recommended** BAR 11:00 to close Wed through Sunday 4:00 to close Tuesday Mondays House Manager Sean Pieters Chef Benjamin Sommerfeldt Service Manager Jordon Eckhardt Office Manager Kori Novicki Treasurer Jennifer Spicer Commodore Mike Knop Vice Commodore Mark Wessel Recording Secretary Leighanne Metter -Jensen Rear Commodore Dan Gruenke Membership Secretary Jeanette Wierzbach Contents Commodore s Comments SYC Club Calendar SYC Book Club New SYC Members Sail Sheboygan Lakefront Open House Coast Guard Seeks PFDs New SYC Staff New Menus Kentucky Derby Photos Mother s Day Photos Venetian Night and July Fourth s s 1 2 3 3 4 4 4 5 6-7 8-9 10 11 Bow N Stern Editor, Ronald F. 4 Sail Sheboygan The United States Yngling Association is excited to announce it is partnering with Sail Sheboygan and the Sheboygan Yacht Club to host a three-regatta series including the 2019 International Yngling Class World Championship and the 2018 and 2019 North American Championships as feeder events. Designed in Norway in 1967 by Jan Linge, the Yngling is a 20-foot open cockpit keelboat that is commonly thought of as a smaller version of his Soling design. The Yngling is sailed with a crew of three with a sail plan that includes a main, jib, and spinnaker. In the US there are currently only four active Yngling fleets and 50 registered boats, but it is a popular race boat in Northern Europe and Australia where the class attracts 40-60 boats annually at the Open World Championship Regatta. The class saw a resurgence in number of boats built and improved sail design when the Yngling appeared at the 2004 and 2008 Olympics as the Women s Keelboat. Sheboygan native, Christine Kronich, joined the Minnetonka Yacht Club Yngling fleet eighteen years ago when she was offered a boat by a co-worker who was being transferred out of state. After sailing three World Championships herself, in Denmark 2008, Norway 2015 and Austria 2016, she thought her home town would serve as a perfect venue for the class as the Europeans were encouraging the US to take another turn at hosting the Worlds, the last of which was held in Newport, RI in 2000. Sheboygan sits about equidistant between three of the four active clubs, those being, Alpena, MI, Minnetonka, MN, Okoboji, IA and Sakonnet, RI, providing a central location for the North American regattas that will serve as tune ups for the 2019 Open World Championship. Lake Michigan provides more appropriate sailing conditions for the Yngling than the inland lakes and Sheboygan s proximity to Chicago will provide easy travel for Worlds competitors. When the bid was presented to the International Yngling Association, Sail Sheboygan was a familiar name associated with excellent race management, and an easy sell. The 2018 Yngling North American Championship will take place 1-5 August at Sail Sheboygan. You can find the NOR and link to online registration at usa.yngling.org. Charter boats are available for the event and questions about these events can be directed to Sail Sheboygan or Christine Kronich at ckronich@hotmail.com 2018 Lakefront Open House The organizations on the Sheboygan Lakefront invite you to Get to know your Lakefront! On Saturday, 2 June, the Sheboygan Yacht Club (SYC), the Sailing Education Association of Sheboygan (SEAS), the Sheboygan Youth Sailing Center (SYSC), the Harbor Centre Marina, the US Coast Guard Sheboygan Station, and more are hosting an open house with activities from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The day begins with FREE sailboat rides with SEAS and SYSC including rides for individuals with disabilities. If you ve ever wanted to go for a sail, here s your chance. The Harbor Centre Marina will be having boat safety checks, boat vendor displays, and a brat fry from 11:00 to 1:00 p.m. The US Coast Guard will have tours and Coastie the talking boat for the kids. From 4:00 to 5:00 p.m. you will be allowed to BURN YOUR OLD FLARES off the shore behind the SYC. Take advantage of your lakefront has to offer. Sea Scouts will be on the lakefront rigging their boats for the summer sailing season. Stop in and chat to find out what this group of scouts is all about and how to get your kids involved. You are invited to the SYC to discover the benefits of membership and to dine at the Club. Whether it s a snack on the patio or dinner inside, you ll see what the new Chef Benjamin Sommerfeldt is creating. At 7:00 p.m. bring your worn-out socks to the Yacht Club for the Sock Burning Party which officially kicks off the sailing season, as we say goodbye socks, hello flip flops. Staff and volunteers will be on hand throughout the day to answer questions about all the participating organizations and how you can get involved in your lakefront. No matter what your boating skill may be, there is a place for you on the Lakefront. We are looking forward to showing you how. All events will take place from the US Coast Guard Station along Broughton Drive to the Harbor Centre Marina Sheboygan. Visit www.seasheboygan.org/event-calendar for all the details. No registration needed. Please Consider Going Digital If you receive the SYC Bow'N'Stern by mail, consider the advantages of receiving the newsletter via email. Your issue will arrive days earlier than the mailed version, you save SYC money, and you will be able to see photos and other graphic content in gorgeous color. To sign up for the digital version, please contact me at rabler@aag.org or Office Manager Kori Novicki at office@sheboyganyachtclub.com Thanks. ~Ron Abler, Bow'N'Stern Editor 4
