Our annual Australian Salmon Fishing Championship is just around the corner. We are in the 24th year, and there are still plenty of prizes on offer. The Championship runs from 1st of June through to the end of August with a monthly prize of $1000 for the heaviest salmon and a runner up prize of $300. The mystery prize will be announced each fortnight and will be displayed on our Facebook page Australian Salmon Fishing Championship Elliston and on our website. You can win money just for weighing in your fish. We also offer a winter raffle which will have some fantastic fishing gear up for grabs as well as some other fantastic prizes (see our website for more details www.elliston.com.au/ salmon). We would like to thank all our sponsors and in particular our major sponsors District Council of Elliston and the Liberty Elliston Roadhouse and our diamond sponsor Elliston Hotel. Without these sponsors we would not be able to hold the competition. We also look forward to see our returning fishermen who enjoy our fantastic fishing each year from all over Australia and of course all of the new competitors making the journey to our tranquil town and secluded beaches. The weigh in station is based at the Elliston Apartments and available between 9am and 6pm, which is just across the road from the Elliston Hotel. Fish must be caught anywhere between Sheringa Beach and Mt Camel Beach be gutted and gilled prior to weighing in You can buy an entry ticket for $10 from our participating local businesses and selected fishing shops in Port Lincoln. You must purchase your ticket before you fish to allow you to weigh 3 fish per weigh in. History Festival Launch The Elliston History Festival Open Doors Weekend and History Month of May was successfully opened on Saturday 28 April by Mr Peter Treloar M.P. in front of the Old Council Chambers. The event commenced with a convivial morning tea held outside the Council office, followed by the crowd congregating in front of the Old Council Chambers, as Council Elected Member Mr Michael Werchiwski, introduced Mr Treloar, Member for Flinders. Mr Treloar said he was honoured to be asked to officially open the Elliston History Festival and to formally launch the Elliston History Group. He paid tribute to Mr AH Inkster (who had also held the position of Member for Flinders) for his contributions to the area in the early days of the Elliston township history. Retaining historical information was, he said, critically important and he was impressed with the Elliston Display. One spectator commented that events such as this are vital for communities as they not only encourage pride and community involvement but also offer an insight into the area for those visitors passing through. The Elliston History Group, formed late in 2017 with Council support, enthusiastically embraced the proposal to join the SA History Festival and set up a pictorial and archival display in the Old Council Chambers. The Group has already been approached from some descendants of previous residents for background information and are excited to have been able to forge links with the broader community. The History Festival will be open every Wednesday and Friday during the month of May. If you have a photo or document you would like to give to the Group, a scanner has been set up so you can retain your original.
