CALLING ALL CAJUNS! A Publication of The Acadian Memorial Foundation Third Quarter 2017 National Day of the Acadians Fête Nationale des acadiens The Acadian Memorial celebrates the Fête Nationale! Le 15 août 2017 / August 15, 2017 Venez fêter la Fête Nationale des Acadiens avec nous-autres! Come celebrate the National Day of the Acadians with us! On August 15 from 10 am to 5:30 pm, come celebrate with us La Fête Nationale des Acadiens, the National Day of the Acadians, a day chosen in the 19th century by an assembly of Acadians in Canada for its connection to the Assumption and the Virgin Mary, the patron of the Acadians. The day begins at 9 am with a rosary in French led by Joan Broussard to celebrate our Catholic heritage. Join us at 10 am with a program honoring the Mi kmaq Indians, close allies and intermarried with many Acadians. Activities continue all day long! Some of the activities in French include: games of bourré in French with Mary Guirard and Tommy Guidry from Longfellow-Evangeline at noon (bring your lunch) and vignettes with Théâtre Cadien. Prepare to laugh your head off as author Jean François joins us at 3:45 pm to read his short stories in French, Les Quatres Saisons de Danté Hébert. We are pleased to welcome back Dr. Mark Rees and his team for updates on the Projet Nouvelle-Acadie, New Acadia Project at 1:30 pm. Longfellow Evangeline State Historic Site also joins us in the morning to share traditional games and toys for kids of all ages! Continues on Page 3.
Calling All Cajuns 2 Bonjour, Letter from the President Tropical Storm Cindy blew through Acadiana 22 June forcing the postponement of the Acadian Memorial Foundation Annual Meeting. Luckily even though it threatened to rain, the Annual meeting was held 19 July. I ll be president for another year along with Vice President Randy Menard and Treasurer Marty Guidry. Thank you for your faith in us. Dr. Michael Martin, Director of the Center for Louisiana Studies gave a very interesting presentation after the Board meeting. He spoke about the work of the Center for Louisiana Studies and the UL Press. Keep your eyes open for some combined events at the Acadian Memorial. The UL Press continues to encourage new scholarship and publications on Acadiana and Louisiana history and culture. Our very own Randy Menard is the latest Living Legend. Warren Perrin awarded Randy this honor 28 July at a ceremony at the Acadian Memorial. Randy has served the Acadian Memorial Foundation as President and currently as vice-president. We are fortunate to have such a committed advocate for Acadian Culture. Thanks, Randy, for all you do. Put August 15th on your calendar!!! This is the National Day of Acadians! The Acadian Memorial has a full day of activities planned. I hope to see you there. The Genealogy Committee continues to offer monthly workshops. Check the schedule on the Acadian Memorial website and Facebook page and Join us!!! The Acadian Memorial Foundation is always looking for new members. Spread the word!!! Stay cool this summer.
