MAY 2018 As the oldest winery in the state of Michigan, St Here at St. Julian, we don t choose wines by the calendar. Sparkling isn t just for New Year s, crisp whites can hit the spot with holiday turkey and big hardy reds are amazing with a summer BBQ. While choosing what to drink is very personal, we think you ll agree that after a long Michigan winter, we are ready to enjoy some lighter style wines. For May, we have new release wines of every color that are perfect for the spring season. Rosé wines instantly come to mind when you think of warmer weather. They are light and refreshing with racy acidity and vibrant fruit. Fans of the sweet rosé wine will be happy to see this easy drinker back for May. We also have a new from our Mountain Road Estate Vineyard that is perfect for lovers of crisp, refreshing porch pounders as we lovingly call them. Spring is the perfect time for crisp, aromatic whites like the newest vintage of the. New to us last year, this wine won top awards from wine professionals and top praise from members. This year s vintage will not disappoint with its crazy pop of acidity and bright tropical flavors. You can also wake up your palate from the colder months with the new vintage of and the first time bottling of our! Both of these wines are elegant and graceful with snappy acidity. We can t decide which we like best so we will just have to get one of each! Sweet wine lovers, we have the return of to tantilize your senses. Infused with Pure Michigan honey, it screams spring! Late Harvest wine fans, you have two new sweet wines to try; the new vintage of the and the first ever. Tropical sweet, yet with a hint of acidity, these wines will refresh your taste buds! Let s not forget the reds! Warmer weather has us thinking of burgers on the grill. We are thrilled with our first ever. This dry beauty starts off earthy and then reveals bright fruit flavors that are lively. We are loving this wine!

SPOTLIGHT ON: 2016 BR TEMPRAÑILLO In our quest to introduce you to new and exciting varietals, we proudly present our first ever bottling of the Braganini Reserve Temprañillo. This grape has been grown in Spain for the last 2,000 years and is relatively new the United States. Grown for St. Julian by Mike Nitz in Baroda, our Temprañillo (pronounced temp-rah-nee-yo) is loving the growing conditions found in Southwest Michigan. Similar to the region of Rioja, Spain, the Lake Michigan Shore Appellation has a dramatic temperature swing between warm days and cool nights. This is called a diurnal shift and creates a beautiful acidity in the grapes. Tempranillo is not especially deep in color because it doesn t have very thick skins. In terms of body and color, it s in between a Pinot Noir and Syrah. Aged in French oak barrels for 12 months, the 2016 Braganini Reserve Temprañillo is packed with an almost savory flavor, created by notes of cherry, tomato jam, spice, peppered grilled berries and tobacco. The acidity keeps the wine fresh and interesting on the palate, making it a great match with a variety of foods. Roasted vegetables, cured meats, pizza, BBQ and burgers all taste amazing with Temprañillo s savory flavors. Chewy with big tannins, yet delicate on the finish, fans of Chambourcin and Pinot Noir will love this wine. Temprañillo is frequently used in the making of traditional Spanish Sangria. For a refreshing summer variation, add ¼ cup A & G Brandy, 2 tbsp. lime juice and 2 tbsp. orange juice to the wine. Pour over ice, top with Sparkling Sweet Nancie and garnish with limes, oranges and cherries. BELLA BEE At St. Julian, we pride ourselves on creating not only beautiful single varietal wines, but fun and exclusive blended wines; like fan favorite Bella Bee. Named for St. Julian President John Braganini s daughter, Isabella (Bella Bee), this sweet white has been one of the most requested wines to have brought back by Wine Club Members. Bella Bee starts with a blend of three white wines; Vidal Blanc, Seyval and Cayuga. Blending different wines together allows us to craft unique wines of wonderful balance and harmony. Vidal Blanc lends fruity aromas and sweet flavors of citrus and pineapple and gives a great acidity to balance with the sweetness. Sevyal adds citrus and a touch of minerality. Cayuga gives the blend structure and flavors of stone fruit; almost like a Riesling. Then the fun begins! Pure Michigan honey from Christensen Family Apiaries out of White Pigeon is added to the blend. Imagine trying to incorporate raw honey into a liquid not easy! It takes over 1 pound of honey per 1 gallon of wine to make this complex and distinctively delicious wine. At 8.5% Residual Sugar, Bella Bee has hints of peach blossom, dried apricot and honeycomb balanced with some acidity on the finish. This wine is will go perfect with a creamy spring pasta or your fried chicken picnic. For a twist on enjoying this wine, try it mixed with some peach tea over ice. It s the ultimate way to sit on the porch and welcome in spring!

Ask Winemaker Nancie s In warmer weather, I like to drink my wines ice cold. I was told this is not a good thing to do. Is that true? Jessica in Cheboygan, MI When the weather turns warmer, many of us love a nice cold glass of white or rose wine, myself included! There is something about an ice cold glass of wine that is so fundamentally pleasing to the eye. The problem is that the other senses might be missing out if your wine is too cold. Serving wine too cold can mute the aromas and flavors. The cold might make it go down easy, but it will be a very different wine than if it was less chilled. The perfect temperature for your wine is a matter of individual taste, but generally speaking, white and rose wines should be served between 40 to 50 degrees. This will preserve their freshness and fruitiness. The best way to get one of these wines at the perfect temperature is to place it in the fridge immediately after bringing it home and leaving it in the fridge for several hours. If you want to enjoy it sooner, place it in the freezer for 30 minutes before drinking, or add some frozen grapes to your glass for 5 minutes. This will put the wine right in that sweet spot temperature wise where the flavors and aromas are at their peak! When it comes to your favorite sparkling wines, ice cold is the way to go (between 41-45 degrees). This will keep the bubbles fine and light, rather than foamy; while, keeping the fresh citrus notes and acidity. The bottom line is the ideal temperature for you is a matter of personal taste. Try the same wine ice cold and slightly chilled. Which do you prefer? That s what s most important! Try the same wine ice cold and slightly chilled. Which do you prefer?
