It has a light oak influence that adds weight and concentration. The vibrant violet, cherry fruit is absolutely typical of good Tempranillo Rioja. A wonderful food wine with plenty of body and structure for hearty dishes. A big wine with an almost chalky minerality that begs to be matched with robust food. (C) 13% vol 16 Touriga Nacional, Point West, 2011/12, Lisboa, Portugal 18.50 This high quality vine has produced a wine of intense colour, forest fruit flavours and subtle oak-spice notes. The power has been harnessed into a deliciously smooth, style, but with real concentration of flavour. The fresh, elegant palate suggests red and black fruits with a long finish. (C) 14.5% vol 20 Ermita de San Felices Rioja Crianza, Bodegas Santalba, 2010/11, Rioja, Spain 28.50 This is a very smart, modern Rioja, packed with smoky, spicy fruit and enveloped by a neatly integrated silky oak overcoat. It has fine concentration and power to stand up to more intense dishes. A real over-performer in its class. (C) 13.5% vol 21 Pinot Noir, Devil s Corner, Tamar Ridge, 2013/14, Tasmania, Australia 28.95 Full of cinnamon spice and cherry fruit with attractive burnt-toffee notes. It is silky smooth with elegant tannins to bring out the berry fruits. One of the neatest and most elegant Pinots we have found Down Under for years. Soft Merlot, firm Cabernet and ripe, dark Malbec come together perfectly in this smooth integrated blend. (D) 13% vol 23 Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Auguste Bessac, 2011/12, Rhône, France 37.50 Châteauneuf has achieved world-favouritism by being as equally spicy and well-flavoured for informal summer eating, as richly warming in winter. Well structured, good acidity and a long finish. This wine is highly recommended with seafood. (2) 13% vol 25 Chenin Blanc, Signal Cannon, Vondeling, 2014/15, Paarl, South Africa 22.50 A strikingly complex nose of stewed pears, ripe melon, golden delicious apples and a hint of jasmine. The wine has a firm, well-structured palate with supreme balance and a long rounded finish. (2) 12% vol 26 Verdejo, Guerilla, 2012/13, Rioja, Spain 22.50 A high intensity wine on the nose with herbaceous and citric fruit aromas. Subtle white flowers on the smooth and rounded palate leave a fresh finish with a hint of acidity.
