Religion and Life - Year 8 ISBL Active Citizenship - Fairtrade KEYS SKILLS: Learning about and from different people Research important information Interpret information found Use numeracy skills Self evaluate and write a personal reflection LEARNING OBJECTIVES: To understand what Fairtrade is To demonstrate skills of negotiation and persuasion in preparing a campaign for change To evaluate and reflect on the skills gained during the homework project This project is equal to five weeks worth of homework and so you are expected to spend 6-10 hours on it in total. This project is to be done by yourself although you can ask your parents and teachers for help. Your tasks have been set out to include: 1. Planning and research 2. Using ICT, Computers and the Internet 3. Working independently The project must be completed on the computer. Printed off and handed in to your teach in the agreed due date. Failure to do this will result in a Faculty detention and a letter written home to your parents. 1

Week 1 Time Spent 1-2 hours Fairtrade Shopping Buying Fairtrade products is a great way to support producers in developing countries. Fairtrade helps workers and farmers to earn a decent living and secure a better life for themselves and their families. Task: Visit your local supermarket and investigate the Fairtrade products sold there. A) Locate the Fairtrade products from the list below in the supermarket look for the Fairtrade logo. Bananas Chocolate Coffee Sugar Ice cream (Ben and Jerry s is Fairtrade) B) Take note of the price of the Fairtrade product C) Take note of the price of the non Fairtrade product D) Calculate the difference Use a chart like this to help you organise your findings. Product Fairtrade Price Non Fairtrade Price Bananas Chocolate Coffee Sugar Ice cream Difference E) Is there a big difference in the price of Fairtrade products and non Fairtrade products? Summarise your findings. 2

Week 2 Time Spent 1 hour Questionnaire Primary Research Take your completed questionnaire from lesson and ask as many people as you can the questions from your questionnaire. You can fill in their answers on your master copy. You must bring these findings in to share with your group in the next lesson. Remember, do not ask other Y8 students! 3

Week 3 Time Spent 2-3 hours Research Task: You must choose a Fairtrade product from the list below to research and create an information leaflet to give to other people. Fairtrade products to choose from... Bananas Chocolate Coffee Cotton Use these websites to help you... www.fairtrade.org www.fairtradeenfield.btch.co.uk Use the questions below to help you research and create your leaflet. A) Where does your product come from? B) Explain how your products gets to the UK and your local shop. C) How much do producers and farmers get paid? D) How much does your product get sold for? E) Explain what we can do to be better consumers. F) How can we encourage people to buy Fairtrade products? G) What are the benefits of Fairtrade for the producers and farmers? Make sure your leaflet is organised, with colour and pictures. 4

Week 4 Time Spent 1-2 hours Letter Writing TASK: Type up a final draft of the letter you wrote in lesson this week. Remember from lesson... Choose from the following places to write to... Local Council (they could use Fairtrade tea and coffee at meetings) Local Cinema (they could sell Fairtrade products) School (they could use Fairtrade products in the canteen) Local businesses (they could use Fairtrade products in their canteen or in meetings) Any shops you know that don t sell Fairtrade Any restaurants you know that don t sell Fairtrade Look up the mailing address or email address of the person you wrote to and send your letter to them. 5

Week 5 Time Spent 1-2 hours PowerPoint Presentation TASK: After completing your PowerPoint Presentation in lesson you need to make people aware by sharing it with them. You can show it to your family, friends, or even your form class. This should be a different person than the person you gave your poster or leaflet to. REMEMBER...EVEN IF EVERY STUDENT IN Y8 RAISES AWARENESS OF FAIRTRADE IN ONE PERSON EACH, WE WILL HAVE SUCCEEDED!! 6
