LIVING IN THE HORSHAM AREA Horsham is around 300 km north west of Melbourne. Dimboola is 37km north of Horsham on the Western Highway, about half way between Horsham and Nhill. ATTRACTIONS, CULTURE AND CLIMATE: Climate Horsham and Dimboola have a hotter, drier climate than Melbourne. The summer temperature averages 30 C. Winter months are cold and sometimes frosty in the mornings, with sunny days averaging around 14 C. Horsham Horsham is situated on the Wimmera River, 25km north of the northern extremity of the Grampians National Park on the Western Highway, which links Melbourne and Adelaide. It is the largest city in the Wimmera region, whose primary industry is sheep and wheat farming, with a population of around 16,000 people. South east of the city are the Wimmera lakes, which form part of the Wimmera Mallee irrigation system, and are popular for fishing, swimming and boating. 3

Horsham is only a short distance from three National Parks: Black Range State Park which adjoins Rocklands Reservoir, and is popular for bushland walks and water activities. See www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/parks/black range state park Grampians National Park which is renowned for its numerous walking tracks, spectacular lookouts, mountain ranges, waterfalls, lakes and wildflower displays. See www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/parks/grampians national park Little Desert National Park, which is a desert in name only. This park comes to life between late winter and early summer with blossoms and wildflowers. See www.parkweb.vic.gov.au/explore/parks/little desert national park Two award winning boutique wineries are close by in Lower Norton, Barangaroo Boutique Wines and Norton Estate Wines. Both are open for tastings. Horsham holds a number of festivals and shows; a country music festival in March/April The Horsham Show an agricultural show in September Wimmera Field Days in March, showcasing agricultural machinery and equipment, along with local art and crafts exhibitions. Horsham also hosts race meetings at Blue Ribbon Raceway, with a weekend carnival each June. The city also boasts a state of the art aquatic complex Horsham Aquatic Centre featuring 5 pools, a 4

group fitness hall and large gym, and a café. For golf enthusiasts, there is also a beautiful golf course with clubhouse and bar. See www.travelvictoria.com.au/horsham/sport/ for details of these sites. Scenic flights from Horsham are also available. Options include Grampians tours and local short flights. See www.travelvictoria.com.au/horsham/tours/ for details for all of the above attractions. Dimboola Dimboola is also situated alongside the Wimmera River, in the heart of wheat growing country. There are some historic buildings still standing, such as the post office and the town hall. The town hosts a number of events, including the German Festival in April, the Dimboola Show in October, and a Regatta in November. The Wimmera River hugs the western and southern sides of the town, which is lined with trees and walking tracks. There are also sections that are popular for fishing and boating. Pink Lake is located a few kilometres west of the town on the Western Highway. It is surrounded by gum and paperbark trees, with distinctive salt tolerant plants growing closer to the lake. The salt was commercially harvested from the lake for many years, and relics from that time can still be seen. See www.dimboola.com.au/ or www.travelvictoria.com.au/dimboola/ for more details. 5
