October is SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome) Awareness Month. As a corporate sponsor of the SIDS National Foundation, The Play School gave a $1,000 donation this past month. The non-profit organization introduced the Back To Sleep campaign and conducts research to identify possible medical vulnerabilities that put infants at greater risk of sudden death. As a result, the sudden death rate is at an all-time low. However, there are still approximately 3,500 sleeprelated infant deaths that occur each year in the U.S. The goal is that within our lifetime, we can find and eliminate the major causes of these deaths and end the tragedy of sudden infant death. To find out more about the American SIDS Institute and to make a monetary donation, please go to their website at: https://sids.org/ways-to-help/donate/ Together we can make a difference.

Page 2 of 6 s October 2018 Special Events FIRE PREVENTION MONTH In addition to SIDS Awareness Month, October is also National Fire Prevention Month. Each year, we have our local fire departments come to our schools. This year, the fire safety specialist will be visiting us in the classroom to give a presentation on fire safety and also allow the kids to check out the protective gear. Fire Safety Visits: Saxony Village: Tuesday, 9/25 Legacy: Tuesday, 10/16 Arbor Village: Thursday, 10/18 Annual Boo Bash Class Parties! We will hold our annual Boo Bash Costume Parties on Wednesday, October 31 st. Sign-up sheets will be posted on classroom doors in mid-october for ways that you can help add to the fun. As always, donations are not required but always appreciated. Please send your child to school in costume. The teachers will change children out of their costume before lunch. We will have a costume parade in the morning that each classroom will participate in. They will trickor-treat, room to room, for special treats and prizes. Please no masks, weapons, or anything that will scare our youngest trickor-treaters. We want everyone to enjoy this fun and special day. Adorable pictures to follow! Page 6 of 6 s October 2018 Charitable Giving OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD We will continue our annual tradition of collecting new toys, stuffed animals, hygiene items, and school supplies. (Toothpaste and candy/gum are no longer accepted due to customs regulations.) A specific donation box will be located in your school s front entryway for the collection dates, Oct 15-Nov 9. We will be using your donations of these new items to coordinate our packing parties with the older children the week of November 12-16. Additional boxes will be available for parents to participate, as well. The boxes are about the size of a small shoe box and truly makes all the difference for children in need across the world, most of whom have never received a gift before. You can learn more about Operation Christmas Child and our efforts at https://www.samaritanspurse.org/what-wedo/operation-christmas-child/ We are so proud to participate in the charitable event every year and hope you will consider joining us in this worthy cause!
