INTRODUCTION Japan is made up of around 6800 island and the second largest importer of agricultural products after USA.Japan has the largest agricultural trade deficit in the world. Agriculture accounts for only 2% of GDP. Only13.2% of the total land area is suitable for cultivation. Except cultivation of Ginger in households Japan, almost all the spices are imported. With industrialization and highly subsidized agriculture Japan has already attained its highest productivity; hence the scope for future development is almost non existent. Almost 90% of its food requirement is met by import from other countries. Japan is importing almost all the spices mainly from Cambodia, Vietnam and China and few from India. The spices imported from India are Ginger, Turmeric, Cardamom; Chillies (Less pungent). If quality standards are maintained there is a greater scope for export of spices from India.
