Reg 242/08 made under the Endangered Species Act, 2007 MNR File #: AU-22-001-10 Dufferin Aggregates Milton Quarry Butternut Plantings 2012 Summary 1.0 Introduction One of the requirements of the above-referenced agreement is the planting of 100 Butternut (Juglans cinerea) trees and 30 suitable companion tree species at suitable locations at the Dufferin Aggregates - Milton Quarry. The agreement refers to five (5) Butternut trees located in the Milton Quarry East Extension Cell. To date, only one (1) Butternut tree has been removed, to allow for the construction of the Water Management System for the Milton Quarry Extension. The other four (4) Butternuts remain. It is anticipated that these trees will not be disturbed until at least 2014. The information contained in this 2012 summary report prepared by Goodban Ecological Consulting Inc. (GEC) includes notes on planting sites, a summary of planting and tending activities, and recommendations. Monitoring and summary information are provided in Tables 1 through 6, using draft MNR reporting templates: Table 1 Butternut 2012 Summary Table 2 Butternut 2012 Monitoring Data Table 3 Companion Tree 2012 Summary Table 4 2012 Basswood Data 1

Table 5 2012 Red Oak Data Table 6 2012 White Spruce Data Mapping and photographs are provided in Attachments A-C: Attachment A Location Map; Attachment B Plot of Individual Tree Locations; and, Attachment C Site Photographs. 2.0 Planting Areas Attachments A and B are figures showing the six planting areas (A through F) which were used between 2010 and 2012. In 2010, Butternut trees were planted in Areas A and B in the spring and fall. In spring 2011, 50 Butternut trees were planted in Areas A, C, D, E and F, following a planting plan submitted by Dufferin on May 19, 2011. This planting plan was approved by MNR before any planting activities occurred in 2011. In the spring and fall of 2012, 30 companion trees were planted. Planting areas A-F and individual tree locations are shown on figures presented in Attachment B. The following provides a summary of the Butternut tree planting areas: Area A Below Escarpment Main Planting Area spring 2010 plantings (May 5, 2010) (ID 714-730, 17 trees); fall 2010 plantings (October 27, 2010) (ID 808-823, 16 trees); spring 2011 plantings (June 2, 2011) (ID 761-773, 13 trees); spring 2012 plantings (May 18, 2012) (9 Red Oak ID 784, 786-88, 789, 792-94, 796; 5 White Spruce ID 781, 783, 790-91, 795); and fall 2012 plantings (October 18, 2012) (2 Basswood ID 782 and 785). Area B Below Escarpment Main Planting Area spring 2010 plantings (May 5, 2010) (ID 701-713, 13 trees); and fall 2010 plantings (October 27, 2010) (ID 801-807, 7 trees). Area C Below Escarpment and the Gap spring 2011 plantings (June 2, 2011) (ID 751-760, 10 trees). 2

Area D Below Escarpment near Storage Yard spring 2011 plantings (June 2, 2011) (ID 731-750, 20 trees). spring 2012 plantings (May 18, 2012) (7 Red Oak ID 797-98, 800, 822-23, 826 and 828; 4 White Spruce ID 799, 824, 827 and 829); and, fall 2012 plantings (October 18, 2012) (2 Basswood ID 830 and 831). Area E East Extension, Enhancement Area, Beyond Fence spring 2011 plantings (June 2, 2011) (ID 774-777, 4 trees). Area F East Extension In Vicinity of Removed Butternut (Bn-001) Beyond Fence spring 2011 plantings (June 2, 2011) (ID 778-780, 3 trees). 3.0 2012 Summary Summary data for Butternut and Companion Species plantings for 2012 are provided in Tables 1 and 3. Monitoring data for Butternut and Companion Species are provided in Tables 2, 4, 5 and 6. 3.1 Fall 2010 Planting (October 27, 2010) Forty (40) trees were planted on October 27, 2010. Twenty-one (21) trees were still alive on August 25, 2012. The trees still alive in 2011 were marked/identified in the field using wooden stakes marked with tree tags (numbered: 801-823). Monitoring data is provided in Table 2. Of the 21 live seedlings, 5 were in good condition, and 16 were in poor condition. The maximum tree height was 92 cm. Tending occurred on July 16 (weed control, mulching and watering) and August 25 (watering). 3.2 Spring 2011 Planting (June 2, 2011) Fifty (50) trees were planted on June 2, 2011 in Areas A (13 trees), C (10 trees), D (20 trees), E (4 trees) and F (3 trees). The trees were obtained from Humber Nursery. They are from seed source 36. Planting was conducted by Sunshine Trees, using a 24 diameter auger. The soil was amended using triple mix and mulch was placed around the base of the trees. To help prevent tree damage caused by deer, 6 foot tall fencing (paige wire) and T-bars were used to create protected enclosures. 3

Tree tags were affixed to the enclosures with wire (ID 731-780). Monitoring data is provided in Table 2. Tending occurred on July 16 (weed control, mulching and watering) and August 25 (watering). Of the 50 trees planted in 2011, their condition as of August 25, 2012 were the following: Good condition - 26 trees (>140 cm ID 731, 735, 736, 737, 742, 743, 745, 746, 747, 748, 759, 761, 762, 765, 767, 769, 771, 772, 773, 774, 775, 776, 777, 778, 779, 780); Good condition - 14 trees (<140 cm: ID 732, 733, 738, 739, 740, 744, 749, 757, 758, 760, 763, 764, 766, 768); Poor 4 trees (ID 741, 750, 755, 756); and Dead 4 trees (ID 734, 751, 752, 753, 754). 3.3 Spring and Fall 2012 Plantings of Companion Species Thirty larger caliper companion trees were planted during the spring and fall of 2012, as follows: Basswood 4 trees ID 782, 785, 830, 831; Red Oak - 16 trees ID 784, 786, 787, 788, 789, 792, 793, 794, 796, 797, 798, 800, 822, 823, 826, 828; and, White Spruce - 10 trees ID 781, 783, 790, 791, 795, 799, 824, 825, 827, 829. Tree tags were affixed to t-bars with wire (ID 781-800, 824-831). Monitoring data is provided in Tables 4, 5 and 6. The Red Oak and White Spruce were ball and burlap stock planted on May 16, 2012. The Basswood were ball and burlap stock planted on October 18, 2012. The Red Oak and Basswood were all greater than 300 cm tall and the White Spruce were all greater than 200 cm tall. Of the 30 companion trees planted in 2012, one White Spruce (ID 825) was dead; all other plantings were in good condition on August 25, 2012. 4

4.0 Recommendations The following are recommendations for the Butternut planting and monitoring program at Dufferin Aggregates - Milton Quarry for the 2013 growing season: Assess condition of all Butternuts and Companion Species during the 2013 season and implement tending measures as necessary; The trees planted during spring 2010 (ID 701-730) appear to be hybrids and remaining live trees should be removed and replaced with Butternuts from seed zone 34, when MNR-approved nursery stock is available; The fall 2010 and spring 2011 plantings that did not survive should be removed and replaced with Butternuts from seed zone 34, when MNRapproved nursery stock is available; and Replace companion tree ID 825 (White Spruce) with a suitable companion species in 2013.
