By the 1700s, vast amounts of wine were shipped to England. Brandy was added to tannic reds as a preservative, and port wine was born. Traditionally served after a meal, sweet port is Portugal s most famous wine, but it is just one of many popular varieties. Today, there s a lot of international excitement about a variety of Portuguese wines, especially those produced in the steep, terraced vineyards along the Douro River. Dry Douro wines, including robust, full-bodied reds and stellar whites, are overshadowing port and winning worldwide acclaim. Wine drinkers may also enjoy sampling velvety Dão, produced from grapes grown just south of the Douro in the north s mountainous heartland. Portuguese Tiles Elaborately painted tiles, known as azulejos, adorn walls, floors, and even pavement in Portugal. This beautiful art form originated from the Moors who ruled Lisbon from the eighth to 12th centuries. By the 18th century, azulejos were used to construct and decorate churches, convents and homes while depicting stories of saints, fables and cultural life. Through the centuries, azulejos have been shaped by a number of influences, including Flemish artists who infused deeper coloring and more detailed portraiture. In the early 20th century, tile art went out of favor in Portugal, but an exciting revival was sparked in the 1950s when tiles were used to adorn Lisbon s first metro station. Today, you ll see old and new tile art everywhere, including Lisbon s impressive Tile Museum, which traces Portugal s tile roots.
