Hearty Beef Soup with Lentils and Barley Serves 4 Ingredients: 6 oz boneless round steak, cut into 1/2-inch cubes 2 tbsp all-purpose flour 1/2 cup chopped onions 1 tsp minced garlic 1/2 cup chopped carrots 1/2 cup chopped green peppers 1/2 cup green lentils 1 can (19oz) tomatoes, with juice 4 1/2 cups beef stock or chicken stock 1/3 cup pearl barley 2 tsp packed brown sugar 1 1/2 tsp dried basil 2 bay leaves 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper 1. In a bowl coat beef with flour, shake off excess. In a non-stick saucepan sprayed with vegetable spray, cook beef over medium-high heat for 5 minutes or until browned on all sides. Remove meat to a plate; re-spray pan. Add onions and garlic and cook for 2 minutes. Add carrots and green peppers, cook, stirring occasionally for 4 minutes or until vegetables are softened. 2. Add browned beef, lentils, tomatoes, stock, barley, brown sugar, basil, bay leaves and pepper; bring to a boil, breaking up tomatoes with back of spoon. Reduce heat to medium-low; cook covered for 45 minutes or until lentils and barley are tender. Ladle soup into bowls. Serve. NAANDWEGAMIK HEALTH & SOCIAL SERVICES Cherry Tomato Salad Serves 4 This speedy dish is healthy, fresh and flavorful!! Ingredients: 12 oz ripe cherry or grape tomatoes 2 TBSP quality extra virgin olive oil 1 TBSP red wine vinegar 1/2 cup chopped green onion, adjust as desired 1/4 cup chopped red onion Generous pinch of sea salt to taste 1/8 tsp black pepper 1 TBSP fresh chopped parsley 1/2 cucumber, chopped 1/3 cup crumbled feta cheese Instructions: 1. Grab your tomatoes and get chopping!! Cut into halves or fourths. 2. Toss tomatoes with olive oil, vinegar, green onion, and red onion. 3. If your adding the optional (and delicious) cucumber and feta add it here. 4. Season with salt and pepper, then give it a taste. Adjust ingredients if desired. 5. Mix in some fresh parsley to garnish and dig in!

Shirley Corbiere - Community Health Representative CHR Update: Don t you just love the Fall time? Time change, kids back in school, leaves turning color. Thanksgiving and Halloween right around the bend. So much fun!! September saw the beginning of the annual Turkey Trot. We have 20 people registered. Work on building up those points folks, you could with a turkey, top prize wins all the fixings for a complete turkey dinner. The Turkey Trot Finale is on Friday, October 5th, 2018. A blood pressure clinic was held on September 12th, the next one will be on October 10th. Eleanor, the nurse and I hosted a lunch and learn on September 14th. The nurse talked about managing your diabetes, the group shared the experiences, and I did a diabetes wordle with them. The wordle will be made into a billboard/large display that will be erected at the ball field area. For October there will be a Leather Gun Case Making Workshop on October 3rd and 4th. This is under Noojmowin-Teg. Courtney Kurek-Indigenous Food Coordinator is the main contact. The AOK health centre is hosting it. This activity is now full. On Saturday, October 6th I will be hosting the Cancer Awareness Event. It will begin with a breakfast at the 4-Directions, followed by our guest speaker Alicia Topp of the Cancer Care Ontario, and then our annual walk. Breakfast is free. Prizes will be awarded randomly. An Open House is in the works for all band programs/offices. This is to take place on October 11th. I will have a booth there, so stop by to visit. On October 24th, I will be taking some ladies to the Ontario Breast Screening Centre for our annual visit for mammograms. The Community Health Nurse will be accompanying us, as she wants to have a better understanding of the process and location of the centre, and besides that she, through Mnaamodzawin is sponsoring the lunch for the group. Miigwetch Mnaamodzawin!! The Fall Fair will take place on Saturday, October 27th. I will be hosting a few activities. Make plans to come out. See you then!! Which represented 14% of all new cancer cases in 2017. An average 78 Canadians were diagnosed with lung cancer every day in 2017. How Common Is Skin Melanoma? If you ve been diagnosed with skin melanoma, you re not alone. In 2017, approximately 7,200 Canadians were diagnosed with skin melanoma. Among Canadian men it is the most common cancer. (Excluding non-melanoma skin cancers). It is the 3rd leading cause of death from cancer in men in Canada. In 2017, an estimated 21,300 men have been diagnosed with prostate cancer.
